Here's one for ya.

I'm playing Loose Deuces at iNetBet - three hand, $1 a coin so $15 a pop.

I'm dealt three deuces and a pair of fives pat. Now my gut instinct tells me to hold all five cards and accept the $225 ($75 x 3), but with Loose Deuces paying 2500 for 4 deuces. I'm tempted to discard the two fives and throw caution to the wind.

The question is, what would you have done? (me thinks everyone knows what I did :D)

Well, it depends. I would have holded all 5 cards in case I had a bad losing streak, or my bankroll had suffered some bad hits by that time. In case I was up, I might feel like trying ....

Come to think of it, considering that I am a rather conservative player, I think I 'd settle with holding these 5 cards...

Once I was playing Jacks or better 10-hands, and I was dealt 10-J-K-A-2 , all diamonds... I decided to keep just the 4 big ones and ,needless to say, I got absolutely NOTHING on any hand...

I voted for "hold the three deuces", course it wasn't my money, lol. So are you going to tell us what happened when the poll is over?

Hold the 3 deuces. Youre playing 3 hands, there's 47 cards left and 2 chances per hand so you have less than a 1 in 8 chance. 8 x $225 = $1800 so odds say go for the $2500 every time :) (Plus of course you're always gonna win something back if you do)

As I'm just getting into this gambling math thing, I calculated an expected return of >$305 for holding the 3 deuces only, compared to the expected return of $225 for holding all cards, so my math says have no fear :)

Maybe Grandmaster can check the result...

I didn't factor in the probability of hitting 4deuces in more than one hands, but the answer to the question stays the same..hold the deuces..

Regardless of the math, holding all cards would be very boring anyway...

Cheers,
SM

Assuming I got the correct pay table, if you have three deuces, you should always discard the other two cards, even if you have a wild royal. VP strategy master gives the expected value of the 3 deuces as $397.65, compared to $225 of holding the 5 of a kind.

If you have a wild royal with 3 dueces, you should keep this hand. It is a much
better choice, even when Wild Royals only pay 25. (so when they pay 45 like on MG casinos, it would be a very bad decision to only hold 3 dueces)

But yes, you should only hold the 3 dueces instead of 5 of a kind on all paytables I know.

Exactly, that's why I discarded the two fives hoping my meister mojo would kick in. :D

Unfortunately it was a crap hand. Two four of a kinds and one straight flush - which paid out way below what I would have gotten if I had held the five cards. Boo frigging hoo. :(

A pat wild royal would only pay $375, so keeping the three deuces only is better.

I agree the pat wild royal pay 375$ (25 *15$).

But keeping the 3 dueces only pay approx (15*15$)=225$

This is from the wizard when you have 3 Deuces, it has the same paytable as the CM played.

3 Deuces
1. Wild royal flush (25.0000)
2. 3 deuces only, non-pair discarded (15.059204)
3. 3 deuces only, pair 9 or less discarded (15.057354)
4. 5 of a kind (15.0000)
5. 3 deuces only, pair 10 or greater discarded (14.938946)
6. 4 to a royal flush (11.829787)
7. Straight flush or less

You missed a very important point, it was Loose Deuces with 4 deuces paying $2500.

You right, I completely missed it. Never played Loose Dueces myself.
I was suspicious that you could make a mistake though :)

I would have kept the three dueces...

I have not played thousands of hands of Loose Dueces Wild...but I have played hundreds...ultimate goal is FOUR DUECES...THREE DUECES seems like a great starting hand to me...lol.

I'd have to agree, that no matter the progress of hands (Up or down bankroll) standing pat was risking the major side of a nice payoff...

But then again, I've done the same..Yep, did hit (Not loose deuces) the 4 deuces, but having those 3 made is easy to run for the fourth.

I played 4-lines decues wild in some casino, got 3 decues and 2 eights
hold the three deuces, one of the line got five deuces:cool:

Holding the three deuces is the correct move over the long term, at least for full pay; I calculate an expected long-term return of ~$135 per draw to three wild cards (which seems to agree with VP Strategy Master's mystery algorithms :) )

But to play devil's advocate, consider this: how often do you play video poker? By drawing to three deuces you'll hit a hand worth more than $75 only 8% of the time; 85% of the time you'll win a Super-Special Surprise! (Errrrr... hand worth less than $75.) Given the relatively low frequency of three deuces (once every 1,000 hands or so) you'll be playing for a while before you make up for the "surprises".

I'd try for the jackpot, but I'm in this for the long haul... and the whole point of this is gambling, after all! :D If you don't try for the near-impossible hands when the odds are good you'll lose more money in the long run.
