Wagering extra for higher bonus chance- how does that work ?

Many online slots now offer a higher chance of bonus if you wager extra (seems to be about 25% more) but how can they offer a higher chance of achieving a bonus if all the games are completely random?

Surely random means random.

If I walk into a casino and offer the guy spinning the roulette wheel an extra 25% of my bet to increase my chances, not sure that would work,so how can online slots offer this ?

I suppose they could add extra bonus / scatters to the "reels" - but wouldn't that be changing the whole return of the game?

What am I missing here ?

Studios can and do have different reel sets in play at different times. A digital slot machine (online or landbased) is not the same as a phyiscal roulette table or a mechanical slot, there are lots of things that can be altered in the background.

It is still random, but as you say the odds of the game changes by adding more bonus/scatters to the reels.

Basically, yes that's what happens. Extra scatters means better chance of hitting the feature.
It does not effect the TRTP however, as you are betting 25% more, but the wins are still based on your base bet.

e.g. You bet £1 and get a £10 win.
But if you do the extra bonus, you bet £1.25 yet still get £10 for the same win.

So what it's actually doing is reducing the RTP of the base game, while increasing the RTP of the bonus features (overall) by the same amount.

Not being picky but all it does is increase the chances of the bonus being awarded, the number of scatters on the reels is irrelevant
and makes no difference to the chance of the bonus dropping, the rng just makes a yes/no decision with more yes,s if you pay the extra

All it does is give you a half way house between standard play and bonus buys. You get the same RTP but more of it is seen in bonus rounds than the base game, where as @KasinoKing says a £1 stake getting a 10x win of £10 is different to the same on £1.25 enhanced bet where the £10 would be 8x stake. The 2x bet difference on that and all other base game wins is refunded over time in the higher amount of bonus rounds resulting in the same RTP but with a slightly lower volatility.

Its not always the same rtp, 'Bonus bet enabled' usually has its own rtp % and its not uncommon for it to be lower than the 'normal' rtp which i think is pretty funny.
Pay more to get less.

OK, approximately the same - remember 0.1% difference is 1/960 so unless you play tens of millions of spins, you're hardly likely to notice any difference lol..

Seems simply like a glorified way for casinos to extract players' money faster, without any meaningful assurances that the bonus will drop any sooner than just grinding the slot!

Even on smaller bets, like 'enhanced' or 'super' bets whereby a 40p spin would now be elevated to 50, those sorts of increases weren't terribly sustainable on modest budgets. And now to find out that the RTP differential is negligible at best really hurts my feels

Further proof that it was all a lights & sounds show funded by moi, and that the games weren't interesting enough in their default state to pursue, never mind over millions of spins to get my paid-for bonus!

Also shows that in multiple- versioned games you just get shinier, different ways to get fleeced for what amounts to the same result: bugger all

For all its sins, at least with the earlier, modestly priced Bonus Buys one could cut through all the pretence, and just get the charade over with quicker than dragging the experience on longer than need be, based on bollocks 🙏

Yeah, the difference is usually very small.
Just thought it was a bit funny since the bonus buy option usually has a higher rtp % than normal play.
Im guessing most people think they are getting a better deal playing with the 'extra bet' option enabled.

As most people are writing here, when you enable it, most of the time it will be a different reel set. Same when you have slots with different RTP levels the slot will adapt its reel set to match the volatility setting, or when a slot has bonus buys and it is always an even number (100x, 200x, 500x, etc) this is because they adjust the reel set to be able to hit the buy to be an even number. Since most of the math will not be build to hit this spot on.
