I have been to Tunica several times. I like Sams Town, but have played poker at Hollywood with good results.

They have several more but I have not made it past these 2 yet.

Still asking myself how I spent 21 days in July in Tunica. I guess trying to find my ass which is still missing, lol. If anyone locates it, please kick it...... Your best bets in Tunica are Harrah's Horseshoe and MGM's Goldstrike although the crowds and riff raff are unbearable at times.(I did checkout Sam's for the first time for a few hours and the employees were nice but I have no desire to go back)......Tunica's casinos are really just gambling joints and convenient for those within reasonable traveling distances. I would never recommend Tunica as a vacation destination for those who are not within a reasonable traveling distance unless a trip to Graceland tickles your fancy as it is within about 45 minutes.,,,,Really not much to do in Tunica(although they try with some decent entertainment like Meatloaf this past w-e,one decent golf course and a few decent restaurants but that is about it other than I like to chase cocktail waitresses for exercise,:D)............a few days is probably enjoyable for most and I probably should be involuntarily committed for just having said the above then actually somehow spending 21 days straight in the cottonfields of Tunica,

as ive always said sams town is my fav, but horseshoes and goldstrike are the best to play at if you want to relax and maybe win some. i also like hollywood casino. i dont care that much for the grand , the golf course i hear is great and it is by far the largest casino in tunica but you never seem to get that comfy feeling playing there.i agree with nash, a 3 or 4 day stay is nice but anything over is a waste of time unless you wanna do the memphis thing which i highly recomend, graceland, beal street, and the civil rights tours about rev.m.l. king alot to do in that area .:)

I took a trip up the mississippi river on the Tunica Queen. Drove by graceland but didnt take the tour. (should have)

I go there because its the closest casino's to where I live.

receives $6.1M from federal government

Memphis Business Journal - August 29, 2007

Federal funding totaling more than $6.1 million has been approved for use at Tunica Municipal Airport in Mississippi.

U.S. Senator Trent Lott, who serves as ranking member of the Senate's Aviation Subcommittee, said the grant will be administered through the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration.

The money will go toward extending the runway and taxiway at the airport. Airport officials are planning a 1,500-foot runway extension, as well as a 35-foot taxiway extension.

"This is an important facility that serves Tunica and the greater Memphis area in a variety of ways, and we'll continue working to ensure that Tunica's airport is equipped to handle a broad array of aircraft," Lott said in a statement.

Tunica Airport is still seeking a new carrier to provide scheduled air service after Pan Am Clipper Connection pulled the plug in October 2006.

Can you say pork barrel?

ummm.... how about... "Oink!" LOL The casinos really do need that airport, though. Much more convenient for players than Memphis. Too bad they don't have an airline that will use it!

True 10 minutes versus 45 to an hour to MEM plus no security hassle and get to the airport a hour before deals so it saves a good 2 hours of travel time. Yet, TUNICA INTERNATIONAL:D is like a SHELL gas station,literally........a few charters and some private flights is all the traffic it gets...........not sure where the money will really go??????????????maybe another Starbucks,LOL:thumbsup:

news: W. Memphis faces competition from Tunica

Link Removed ( Old/Invalid) faces competition from Miss., challenges from opponents

The Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK A greyhound track in West Memphis that recently acquired electronic gambling machines is getting stiff competition from Mississippi casinos and legal challenges from gaming opponents.

The Arkansas Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments this week in a case that challenges the law that allowed voters in Hot Springs and West Memphis to approve video poker and other electronic games.

Meanwhile, the manager of Southland Park Gaming & Racing says the new electronic games havent been a financial boon for the West Memphis greyhound track because of gaming competition in Mississippi.

Overall, I would say its not performing as well as we expected because of the types of games, said Troy Keeping, Southlands president and general manager. Were not on an even playing field with our competition. We significantly underestimated the power of Tunica, Keeper said, referring to casinos just across the Mississippi River in Tunica, Miss., that offer games currently not allowed by Arkansas law.

Southland underwent a major renovation and expansion after the games were approved and offers nearly 1,000 games of skill. Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs added just 130 games.

The Arkansas Supreme Court on Thursday is scheduled to hear oral arguments in the case brought by the Family Action Council Committee. The group argues ....

**sigh** I was afraid this was all a pipe dream in the first place.... Tunica desperately needs new blood (casinos) but nothing ever seems to get off the damn ground. I want someone to come in, build a great casino with great VP and give Harrah's a run for their money.... And I'm sorry, I've lost the link for this story. If anyone wants it, post and I'll see if I can find the story again.

Setbacks blunt grand plans for Tunica resort
Developers promise Myriad will still be built, but on smaller scale
By David Flaum - The Commmercial Appeal - Memphis, TN
Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Developers of the ambitious Myriad Botanical Resort in Tunica hoped to have people gambling at their casinos, staying in their hotels and playing on their golf course by now.

But the project -- the 2004 brainchild of Scott Hawrelechko, a commercial painting contractor based in Edmonton, Alberta (he's no longer a part of the effort) -- has yet to get off the ground.

The venture also is almost $12 million in the hole, according to documents filed with regulators.

The new managers have postponed purchase of the land for the plan, which has been scaled back by about two-thirds from the earlier vision.

Chairman Nick Lopardo said the $1.3 billion version of the project will get done.

"The major thing we've done is we've decided that to build six casinos, six hotels, a convention center and water and snow park to come out of the ground was not realistic," he said.

The new plan: Two casinos with hotels, 125,000 to 150,000 in convention space -- down from 375,000 in the original vision -- with a 600-room hotel, the water-snow park, wellness and health spa, a 6,000-seat covered stadium and a golf course, including the original idea of enclosing the course in a bubble burst.

Myriad agreed to buy more than 500 acres in the northwest part of Tunica county and close on the deal Aug. 1. That was pushed back to Oct. 2.

"We're pretty confident we're going to make that date," Lopardo said.

But, he conceded, it will depend on whether the company raises $200 million in equity by then.

If those pieces fall into place, he said it will take three to four months to get permits needed from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and another six months to build roads and utilities for the property.

"We hope to see vertical (construction) by late spring, early summer," he said.

Myriad has no timetable for getting any of the project built, including the two casinos that will have a Myriad brand name, Lopardo said.

The company's timing isn't the greatest....

Can they make chicken salad out of chicken_______________???............At least a passing thought:eek:...........I really, as I think you know, can only handle The Horseshoe and Gold Strike(and I think neither of us can handle Tunica on the w-e's,iirc) so lets hope for another option which would be nice, could give us a little leverage with our only current options.:)

NASH, has the GS ever started any renovations on their hotel rooms? The rooms were getting a bit shabby, and the beds were hard as a rock. It was 'home' till MGM took over and we stayed there almost exclusively for years.

Mousey, I did not notice any signs of construction or construction traffic when I was in Tunica in July but I was only in the GS casino and bars (imagine that) as I stayed all 21 days at the Shoe. It is possible since then but I am not in the know post July. I will try and make a call and ask an aquaintenance at the GS assuming she will give me the time of day.:D

MOUSEY, my friend and I had a good conversation today. Ironically, she has left GS and is now cocktailing at the Shoe. She said there is no current renovation at the GS and furthermore she added the back areas we do not see plus the rooms are nasty,(that is a quote). She said stay with The Shoe pursuant to me..........She was clueless as to GS's plans for any future renovation of the rooms upon my inquiring...........Hope this helps,:)

Thanks Nash, that does help. I think we'll stick with Sam's again next trip. Rooms are not upscale, but they're clean -- and room and food is all comped with no hassle, so no reason to spend more time ($$) at the GS. I wasn't happy with our rooms at the GS the last couple of times we stayed there (early last year) -- and one of them was a suite. You can tell the GS was once top of the heap... but the rooms were getting really worn and shabby. Housekeeping is slack. Carpets were filthy -- couldn't walk around in bare or sock feet in the room. Old cig burns on sofa and night tables, curtain hems coming out, wallpaper just beginning to peel in the corner. Little stuff that you don't notice at first glance, but after 3 or 4 nights you see the dust and mold under the chairs. Just shows MGM is spending all their money on that new tower and condos in Vegas and letting the GS go to shit.

Renovations were planned way back when Mandalay Bay owned it. And once they started talking about selling the joint, nothing got upgraded -- oh... except they did put restrooms in the little VIP lounge.

GS also has a use it or lose it comp policy now. Comp $ are not banked. Personally I don't like spending hard earned comps on overpriced paper-thin logo Tshirts and crappy resort wear just to use up my comps before going home.

I've been to Tunica several times. Only on my first trip did I pay to get there,
gamble and eat.

From then on, it was free rooms, free meals, free money to gamble with, and
all those free drinks carried to you while you play.

I always stayed at the Sheraton, then visit Horseshoe, and a few others.

comps

They do have good comps.

At sam's town the first time I went I played a few slots but did play $3-$6 limit holdem for several hours.

Was comped enough to get a great meal.

Then 2 weeks later I got 2 free tickets to one of the concerts they have there(a $50 value at $25 ticket price.

I started with $100 limit for gambling, and wound up being $10 down when I got ready to stop.

I also received a coupon for a free room but didn't use it

Casino-win rumors flew on night of Memphis slaying
Police say robbery was motive; 3 face murder charges

By WOODY BAIRD
Associated Press

MEMPHIS — Three men were charged with murder Monday in the shooting of a former Antioch High School football player on the University of Memphis campus during an attempted robbery, authorities said.

Police said there were rumors around campus that Taylor Bradford, 21, had won more than $3,000 at a nearby casino the night before police found him Sept. 30 in his car, which had crashed into a tree near his campus apartment.

Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin said authorities believe the attackers intended to rob Bradford but didn't get what they came for.

"He was targeted because there was some information that was out there and they believed he had some cash," Godwin said. "The investigation is ongoing, and we do expect additional arrests."

The Memphis men charged were identified as DaeShawn Tate, 21; Victor Trezevant, 21; and Courtney Washington, 22. They are not students at the university.

Cash was not taken

Police said the three men believed rumors that Bradford had won thousands of dollars at a north Mississippi casino.

"When that rumor mill started going, obviously that generated some motive for some people," Sgt. Vince Higgins said.

Police said Bradford had several thousand dollars on him at the time of his death, but Godwin declined to say why his attackers didn't take it. He also refused to say if Bradford won the money at a casino.

Bradford was shot near a campus parking lot Sept. 30 but managed to drive off in his car, which crashed into a tree a few blocks away. Police found him in the car with a fatal gunshot wound.

Godwin said police do not believe Bradford knew his assailants.

Police would not say if Bradford was in his car when he was shot or if the 300-pound defensive lineman fought his attackers.

Godwin said an anonymous tip led police to the suspects.

Bradford was attacked on a Sunday night about 9:45. Police believed the attackers fled the campus immediately, but classes were canceled the next day as a precaution.

Bradford, a Nashville native who transferred to Memphis from Samford University, was buried over the weekend

Allegiant MD-80s also to go to Biloxi, New Orleans
By Jane Roberts (Contact)
Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Beginning Jan. 1, Allegiant Air will operate two jets from Tunica Air Center in a two-year contract with a subsidiary of Harrah's Entertainment.

The flights will serve Biloxi, Miss., New Orleans, St. Louis and Council Bluffs, Iowa -- all towns where Harrah's has casinos -- plus Shreveport, La., which has a racetrack.

Harrah's has guaranteed Allegiant a minimum of $11.8 million in annual revenue, according to Allegiant's third-quarter earnings report, made public Monday.

Harrah's would not comment, saying it was in the process of complying with Department of Transportation requirements, according to legal counsel Uri Clinton.

The deal was disclosed Oct. 16, according to documents Allegiant filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Allegiant plans to serve Tunica with two MD-80 aircraft, which seat 130 passengers.

Since 2002, it has had a similar arrangement with Harrah's in Nevada....

'mold' is right. Took me awhile but I finally figured out the reason I got sick after every gambling trip was something to do with staying at the GS. LOL But they really do need to remodel and freshen up their rooms.
