The payout on the free spins is based on your average wager, not the triggering wager. (I'm not sure exactly how this average is calculated though, it may be some sort of "whichever is lower" between average overall wager and average feature/fight-scene triggering wager.)

In other words, no, the glitch is not still there, but I'm sure the casinos won't mind if you try out your strategy anyway. If the "average" is calculated in such a way to ensure the game cannot be exploited, your RTP may be even less than the normally expected amount if you change your bet size.
