Alright I got a burner for my pc and have been burning alot of movies for my kids all data as in 5 movies per disc. Now I was gonna buy 2 small lap tops for them to watch them but was thinking a Play station 3 would be better.
alot of the movies are DIVX but play on windows media player if that tells you anything. With the PS3 they get a game system too ..........but will it play the movies? Walmart has cheap lap tops like 250 apiece that will.

yes ps3 plays movies...regular dvds and Blue ray dvds...actually the blue ray in PS3 is one of the better ones on the market....the ps3 is actually a great buy if you want to play movies/blue ray & video games,,,....when i stood in line to get my PS3 when it came out blue ray players were still about 1,000.00 the PS3 was $600 back then so you got a blue ray player and video game system for less than what a blue ray player went for,...again the blue ray player in the ps3 was rated real high the last time i looked a while back

It could be because blue ray discs can store tons of information, but blu ray for movies is the best quality you can get. When you go to the video store or any store that sels DVD's take a look they have regular DVD's and Blu ray DVD's. Now the blue ray doesnt make too much of a difference unless you are running the player through an HD TV. So again the PS3 is a great deal because it has a Blu Ray player built in. You can play regular DVDS or blu ray DVDS on PS3. You can not play Blu Ray discs on a regular DVD player

A quick google search returns mixed answers, some yes some no. I don't have a PS3, so I can't test it for you, but here is the Sony documentation on the subject:

It all depends on the codec used to convert the movie in the first place. It sounds like DivX coded movies will work, what is the file extension (.avi, .wmv, etc)?

If all else fails you can burn the movies as video dvds (many free programs out there will convert and burn them) rather than data dvds, though only one movie can be burnt to a dvd without a significant quality hit. But then if you do that, any cheap $25 dvd player will usually play them, so no point getting a laptop or PS3 just for that.

I have the PS3 so I can tell you first hand, Plays:

1)Blu Ray DVDs
2)DVD's
3) PS2 & 3 Games
and yes there are a bunch of ports for memory sticks ect...like in the link you sent....i ve put memory sticks with both video and still pics on the PS3 before..

In conlusion PS3 is a sick console, awesome gaming, awesome movie watching, You can download rental and puchased movies and games right thru the PS3 store.

PS3 will play DIVX just fine.
It will not, however, play HD movies (MKV, common on ******bay), whithout converting the file.

If you want to be able to play a variety of files, you should get a media player like

.

Of course, those won't play games and blurays like PS3.

Like Perc said, if you just need DIVX support, almost any cheap DVD player will do.

oh and it'd cost alot of money to burn as dvds as data i get 5 movies average on a disc I have unlimited download so hey i'm getting them the collection i would have wanted. likely 1000 by the time i'm done. Really though I think I'll buy the ps3 so they have a gaming option too. I am against game addicted kids but what the hell. I love this new fangled internet contraption often when a movie is in theaters I can watch it at home same time.

Just remember that even though a dvd player or the PS3 says it can handle DivX movies, what that really means is DivX certified movies encoded in theater mode. I'm positive that those divx avi files you have are not certified DivX movies and will not play as advertised.

I was disappointed to find that out a few years back. I just got myself a laptop (with HDMI output) and a couple 1TB drives for all my movies. No burning anything, and I can watch blu ray rips on my HDTV with surround and everything. Some can be 12GB or more but if you have unlimited download, it doesn't really matter.

That being said, if you don't really need a laptop but want that same functionality for movies, get a WD TV Live or something similar, I think they are only around $100 or less.

Get a PS3 too if you want for games, but a media player like the WD one will prevent you from running into annoying issues with random movies not working on the PS3, or having to convert them before they do work (mainly thinking about HD rips).

I keep getting confused some say yep no problem others say no there will be issues. All the movies seem to play on windows media player which is why i thought about the small laptops maybe b4 i buy anything i'll take a couple discs in and make sure they work. ps3 is now what i really want to get last video game i played was super nintendo b4 that it was sega so i'm outta the loop on all of this.

It's confusing doing a google search on the subject as well, but I found out why. Looks like a somewhat-recent firmware update enabled the PS3 to play .avi files, and it sounds like it will play them from a data disc and/or external hard drive.

But that is definitely a good idea to take in a few discs to try them out first. That's the only way you'd know for sure before buying it.
