I hope this is ok here I get on this nursing shortage thing at times lol
As a matter of fact I go back to work on Jan 25th But for the past few weeks I been going in time to time.

the nursing shortage can become quite a problem if it isn't addressed effectively (already a problem where i live in so. cal). i think people don't realize how important nurses are in the healthcare system. a lack of interest in this field has caused an influx of foreign trained nurses, which is fine, but it shows the kind of shortage problem there is here.

they aren't paid enough and the work conditions can be...lets say....worse than not getting a bonus in 500 spins.

think about it...

who does the initial triage in an ER?
who actually performs most diagnostic procedures?
who actually monitors patients in a hospital setting?
who adminsters the doctor's orders?
who's the first and last person to have contact with a patient in the hospital?
in a code blue, who gets to the patient first?

and here's one that i can't stress enough... nurses play an extremly important role in training interns and residents who become the doctors that treat you.

by the way, i'm not a nurse... but i respect them a lot and anything that might get more people into the field is GREAT with me!

To tell you the truth most work today is done by CNA's or some places call it Patient Care associates.I been there & done that and it's a dirty job for them today.and they do get paid crap I do have to say.
But I do have to say they are lucky to have a boss like me around I'm too easy but if you get on me I will make your day.
The pay is ok for Nurses but it can be better that's for sure.In many States they do pay ^%$# for it also.

who actually performs most diagnostic procedures?= This depands on what diagnostic procedures you are talking about.

who actually monitors patients in a hospital setting?=CNA's or Patient Care associates.

who adminsters the doctor's orders?= Nurses or someone that is DMR cert.

who's the first and last person to have contact with a patient in the hospital?= Doctors or Nurses in the most part.

in a code blue, who gets to the patient first?= Doctors or Nurses in the most part that's if we are talking hospital.

This does change from State to State

I don't think the biggest problem is the lack of interest rather it's the lack of properly educated teachers/professors. This in turn reduces the amount of students a school can handle. So if you really want to help with the cause, tell the nurses to go back to school so they can train students.

But by doing so, there would be less nurses working in the field. Hence the need for outside help at the moment.

It also doesn't help that many beginning nurses get burnt out from their patients/clients due to the increased workload from day 1.
