PayPal to fine gamblers

p2pnet.net News:- PayPal, which owes much of its early growth to online gambling, says it'll fine people up to $500 for uses related to gambling, adult content or services, and buying or selling prescription drugs from noncertified sources.

Now part of the eBay auction empire, PayPal once received almost 10% of its revenue from online gambling, says Reuters here, going on that regulations prohibiting the processing of gambling and adult transactions followed its acquisition by eBay in 2002.

Starting September 24, PayPal will impose fines for violations and, "may take legal action to recover losses in excess of the fines".

Ex-PayPal executive and author of "The PayPal Wars" Eric Jackson called the new policy "draconian," says Retuers.

For US players at least, there is no reason to use PayPal for gambling so what is the big deal? I agree though it is draconian!

Can someone explain to me why guns are fine in the US but playing cards is evil?? Some of these rules society imposes (in general) confuse me.... :(

LMAO Simmo, you are so right! And don't forget along with the evils of gambling are the even worse evils of nude breasts on tv or at the beach  We really are f'd up at times here.

Lol - that reminds me of the time Beverley Hills Cop came out for TV and some wise guy decided that they'd replace the oft used "F*** You" phrase with "Forget You" - made a funny film bloody hilarious!

Protecting kids is one thing, but honestly! They'll be passing a law soon saying mum's can't breastfeed as the sight of the breast may cause long-term psychological damage to the baby!

Maybe I'm missing it. What is wrong with the ownership of guns? Hunting is big sport here and puts food on many families table just like fishing. Gambling in general (lotteries) only is used here to tax the poor. Competition outside of B&M casinos is generally frowned upon!

Well put it this way, i'd rather have an argument with a guy carrying a fishing rod than a guy carrying a gun :)

My point is not so much whether guns and gambling are "bad". It's that if the authorities "allow" someone to make their own decision on the responsibility of owning a gun, then surely they should "allow" them to make their own decision as to whether they are responsible enough to gamble sensibly.

That's a damned good point you make there, Simmo!

Guns have many legitimate uses, the only problem is that accidents and illegal use can kill. My worst gambling accidents only cost me $10.

According to the Center for Disease Control's mortality statistics, 148,000 people died in the US in 2000. 42,000 of these were motor vehicle traffic related. 29,000 were firearm related, including 16,500 suicides, 11,000 murders, the rest of firearm related deaths were accidents, legal intervention and undetermined.

To be the devil's advocate, if 3,000 deaths justified the invasion of a country and the deaths of further Americans and others, than 11,000 murders committed by firearms or the 42,000 motor vehicle related deaths each year should certainly warrant some action. There should be plenty of scope for saving American lives at home, except it would not be popular with the gun and car lobbies.

The 16,500 suicides number is artificially inflating the number of firearms deaths. Those people were determined to kill themselves (obviously) and would have found another method in the absence of access to a firearm. Far more people are killed & injured by knives in the US than by firearms.

Nothing wrong with responsible gun ownership DeMango, I fully support and practice it myself.

Simmo, you said it perfectly "My point is not so much whether guns and gambling are "bad". I have no statistics on the "success" rate of suicide attempts by other methods, but I think that it is harder to kill yourself with a knife or by taking poisons. By most methods, death is not instantaneous, so there is a chance that you will be found and taken to hospital. If the availabilty of guns were lower, more people attempting suicide would survive. There are still the 11,000 murders, which don't seem to bother anyone.

There is nothing to stop someone from jumping off a tall building or a bridge! With sufficient height, death is mostly guaranteed! Gun doesn't even come into the equation.

Most people don't live in large cities, and those building in large cities have security. We you jump off something you don't die instantly, with a gun you are dead with no pain and can do it at any time without planning (no time for a second thought)

Not saying guns aren't fun to use at ranges, but proper mental health should be a prerequisite.

Why don't you try jumping off something tall in Boston and see if you not die instantly? To kill yourself by gun, you first have to get a license or try to get the gun from someone who has one, whereas tall buildings grow like trees. If not building, you can always try a bridge or throw yourself in front of cars on highway. Is it not true that most suicides are commited in big cities with tall buildings (more stressful with all the pressures and stress there) and not in teeny tiny 18th century villages?

Throwing yourself in front of cars on the highway would probably be the last way I would try to kill myself because you would be more likely to break your legs and arms and be lying in pain in the middle of the road, coughing up blood.
How exactly am I supposed to get to the top of the John Hancock Tower without working there, and then find an open window to fall from either?

Guns can be purchased over the counter in under 30 minutes if you have an FID card, or be had illegally, or in many cases found via a relative who owns a gun.
As someone who shoots, guns are used as adrenaline release valves in the form of hunting and simply firing and are a very extreme way of finding excitement, the same way it is for people with gambling. When this no longer gives you thrills life may seem boring or uneventful and you have a gun around to end yourself with...

Ok thats enough morose talk from me for at least a few months.
Have a nice night everyone and DON'T KILL YOURSELF

Only partially true. You can purchase one over the counter with an FID card as long as its a long gun (rifle or shotgun with longer than a 16.5" barrel). You cannot buy a handgun without a license to carry which has very strenuous requirements including background checks, fingerprinting, and other requirements set by the local chief of police. Most are denied. And even then, you may be limited to small capacity handguns and further limited to where & when you can carry it outside of your home (only to & from the range, etc).

And proper mental health is a prerequisite. Its part of the forms that are filled out when you make the purchase, certifying you are not a felon, drug/alcohol addict, loon, etc.

Fact is, all of these regulations only affect people who purchase guns legally and are not criminals. Criminals don't care about licensing, etc because they buy them illegally usually from people who stole them from the legal owners.

Wow, did we really get off topic on this thread or what!

Well its certainly quicker, but not necessarily easier. A good friend of mine committed suicide a few years ago, and he actually attempted multiple methods before succeeding. Some were creative, some were obvious cries for help. Unfortunately, the 'help' he got was pretty much useless (the so-called therapist had him sign a form saying he wouldn't kill himself, that worked well).

An interesting statistic though, most suicidal women will not commit suicide with a firearm, they will use drugs/poisons or some other less violent method. the theory is that they are brought up to always look their best and spend years learning how to put on makeup, do their hair, etc. and don't want to mess that up by shooting themselves in the head. If they do use a firearm, which is rare, they typically shoot themselves in the chest. Just something I learned from an expert I worked with at a previous job.

I agree with Brackis though, enough of this depressing talk, lets go out and find us some royals!

I am all for that. Now only if I could remember what those royals look like, I have not seen one in such a long time. :)

I can relate, just found my first in a long time a few nights ago at Monaco Gold. Felt nice, that's for sure.

hey peeps, <please notice the slight look of confusion>

ARE we now committing suicide over PAYPAL... or are PayPal encouraging guns?

Truth it, there are way to many pple upset with the state of affairs regarding gambling, online or off. In South Africa a few years ago there was a huge thing about (ERR-correction)GRANDWEST CASINO's licence being bought.
The governors are peeved because gambling, in any form is like prostitution... the worlds OLDEST form of entertainment, and there is not really a damn thing they can do about it.

Truth is. We all have choices, and we use our right to that choice. We are (hopefully) informed about the choices we make.

So to the PayPals of this world... where you close one door, another is sure to open!!

VIVA... or something
