This morning I attempted to make a deposit with a reputable RTG casino. I was asked to contact live chat to complete the deposit. Having done so I was asked for my card details and then to my astonishment they asked for my visa verification password. Who in their right mind would give them a password for a credit card.Of course I declined that request.
What do you think about this.

Regards

I have this when making deposits online. As my bank partakes in the Verified by Visa Scheme. Basically when depositing it takes you to the bank's website to put your password in.

I've never deposited over the phone. However I am guessing that the person at the casino taking your payment details, didn't activate it as a sale over the phone.

You did the right thing not giving your password out.

However I wouldn't necessarily say the casino is rogue. Sounds more like a training issue. I could of course be wrong though.

I do not know what to make of it. The live chat person stated that she was trying to process the deposit through their system but the visa verification is a separate issue altogether - nothing to do with their system - its security protection from visa to protect the individual.
It would be like a retailer asking for your pinumber.
Training issue , possibly - surely they would know never to ask for a info like this however.
All I can say is that having made lots of deposits to all manner of casino`s I have never come across this before.
I was also not offered the opportunity of sending the chat to my email either come to think of it.

e-wallets

I always thought it would be much safer to use some e-wallet like Moneybookers or Neteller. All casinos accept these ones. (Well, Neteller services are more expensive).
Both are very quick and handy.

It's EXACTLY the same. The terms that come with "verified by VISA" make it clear that you MUST NOT divulge your password to ANYONE, and certainly not the MERCHANT. Sometimes, you are asked for selected letters, not the entire password, to outwit keyloggers (they won't get it all at once).

It is supposed to operate ONLINE, the merchant's system is at fault here, as it should have displayed the "verified by VISA" screen for you to enter the password, but instead seems to have been treated as a "declined transaction", with the recommendation that you try via phone or chat.

There are only a couple of casinos that actually USE "verified by VISA", most just try to put the transaction through. The card issuers are probably cracking down on this, and REQUIRING their online merchants to take part in "verified by VISA" where it is available, because chip & pin has caused an INCREASE in Internet based card fraud. MY casino card is now part of "verified by VISA", but still works with non-participating merchants. Another card I had was NOT part of "verified by VISA", the bank used an in-house fraud detection system, and this card was CONSTANTLY getting locked when used at casinos, it seemed to be a rate of 50/50 whether a transaction would work, or lock the card.

The password is the only thing NOT printed on the card itself when it comes to making a transaction over the internet, and is your ONLY safeguard if your card is stolen, or cloned, for use over the internet.

Pardon my ignorance but waht is a password for a credit card? I have 6 credit cards not including the all access debit card..Only one credit card so far can be used at online casino... but have never encountered a
"password" situation Doi tou mean that 3 digit code at the back of the card?

Thanks

Maybe the customer service did explain it right what she needed was the 3 digit verification code imprinted on the back of your card. Anytime you make purchases over the internet they need that number to make sure your card is not used by someone else.

some onlineshops, or casinos, needs the "verified by visa" code, which you get, when you use a credit card ;)

even my visa electron debit card have it :)

i got verafied visa but im not shure who runs it but i trusted the group that turned me on to it , i think its a clearing house [but it was top casino group that invited me to Q. T SO i ve been useing it

HOW EVER NEVER GIVE OUT THE PASS WORD TO ANOTHER LIVE PERSON

Have you contacted casino management to report this? If an employee is making this request, they need to be made aware it is unacceptable.

There is also the possiblity that an employee may be involved in fraud, without their employer's knowledge. I remember more than one case in my days as a legal secretary that involved employees stealing credit card information and selling it to others, usually by retaining the carbons.

Thankyou for the responses and feedback.

I was asked for the expiry date - then the 3 last numbers on the back of the card.
Then she asked me for my visa verification password.
I will contact their management this morning and inform them. I shall let you know if there is any outcome.
I still cannot believe they asked for this. I will not name and shame as they have been getting lots of good feedback in this forum and I have never heard of anyone, casino or retail ever requesting this information before - everybody knows never to give out any type of password.
Anyway - thanks again everybody

You should perhaps PM Bryan the identity of the casino, so that he too can follow this up. He will have contacts with most operators, and this is quite a serious breach. If you had NOT known any better, you might have given out this password BECAUSE you trusted the casino. This would have lead you to breach the terms of your credit card agreement, and they may NOT have given you back any money because you gave out your password, and it was used by the fraudster.
Customers are having similar problems already with PIN numbers, where banks refuse to reimburse money because they assume the customer MUST have been at fault if the PIN was used, even though technology DOES exist to circumvent chip & pin protection, but the banks would rather have us believe it is 100% secure.
The simplest is "shoulder surfing", or miniature cameras coupled with a fake slot which pretends your card has been "retained by the bank".

Hi everyone, i am back ;)

Like Net+ Cards, i have met few online shops, that do not follow Visa standards, however, even boring, here is some basic instructions:

Shop safely online
Verified by Visa ensures that both you and the retailer are genuine.

Look out for the Verified by Visa logo on your favourite websites.

If you want to use your Visa card on a website that isnt offering Verified by Visa yet, then you should use these simple safeguards:

* Make sure that your card details will be encrypted securely before being sent across the Internet look for an unbroken key or lock at the bottom of your browser window or check the website address, which should begin https:// rather than http://
* Use the latest version of your browser's software and check to be sure your computer's operating system software is up to date
* Shop with retailers you know about, or research them first to ensure they are reputable and reliable
* Keep a record of your Internet transactions, including the retailer's website address. Many online stores send customers e-mails summarising the purchase details make sure you save or print these
* Before buying, read the delivery and return policies that should be on the retailers website. Can unsatisfactory items be sent back? If the items are faulty, can you get a refund or a credit note?
* The retailers website should also have information about delivery arrangements and costs, currencies they accept and taxes that apply
* Look for a telephone number or e-mail address and note them down in case you have any queries

See that http/https, because if you can not be sure or the Casino will not confirm Your security, then contact them. You PIN code is only for you, not for anybody else. PIN and CVC aka Card Verification Number are NOT the same.

Ps. when i quoted first lines from Visa-site, i was like huh?!... cause i got this:
"Shop safely online
Woman buying online Verified by Visa ensures that both you and the retailer are genuine..."
Why? because picture, was include the quote, Picture name:
....com/images/pics/womanbuyingonline2.jpg ;)
