My/Our New Baby!!!

I know I've been MIA for a few days....it's been hectic and crazy. We've been promising my daughter a puppy for about a month now, and after tons of reading ads, making phone calls, etc., we finally found the perfect one. She is an absolute doll, her name is Tango, and she's eight weeks old. We picked her up yesterday morning, and needless to say my hands have been full ever since, lol.

This first pic is her with her two sisters. She is the one on the far right. Toy Pomeranians, btw....

The other pics are my daughter running around in the backyard with her yesterday. It's been a while since I've had a puppy, but so far, I think she's gonna turn out to be a good dog. She seems eager to learn....we're paper training her for now, as well as outdoor (which I want full-time once she gets a bit older). We made her bed up last night, and put her in it about 11:30, and she laid right down and went to sleep, not a peep out of her. About 7 this morning, she woke me up crying, so I took her out, and boom.....right away she had to potty.

So anyway, that's where I've been if anyone noticed I was missing, lol. Rusty, got your email and will reply.

Well, I am sure your daughter is over the moon. This is a very good age for a a kid and and dog. My buddy Jackie has a pomeranian, a gift from her ex to her children. Her son's in Whitehorse and her daugher is at Sheridan, but Candy comes over to bully my old man (border collie mix, 12 plus now).

"Please mom can I have a dog". The kids grow up and leave home, the dogs stay. Not sure I'd have it any other way.

I have a really soft spot for Pom's, just don't let her become a princess. Too easy when they are so pretty.

Mine are a tad bigger than yours are (German shepherd/black lab/husky mix). And mine are getting older, the younguns are now 8, their mommy is 9 1/2 and their daddy is 10, my grandpa dog is 16 and I'm weaning myself on the prospect of having to put him to sleep soon.
I hope you enjoy your new addition to your family. They can be the bestest friends in the wholewide world. They'll love you no matter what and they seem to know when a person needs a little TLC.

Hearing everyone talk about bringing dogs home for their children makes me think there is something wrong with my husband and I...we got the greyhounds for ourselves. hahahahaha....my daughter never had an interest in getting a dog.

Shepherds are my absolute favourite animals in the world, next to horses, lol. A well trained German Shepherd is probably the best companion a person can ever have (I've had two in my life). Thing is, my daughter is only nine, and we wanted a small enough dog that she can look after on her own, somewhat anyway. And I'm getting older now...not sure I have what it takes anymore to train a Shepherd and deal with the physical aspect of them, lol.

I sympathize with you on your older ones....I've been there too many times. After my last dog, I pretty much said that's it....of course, until my daughter started begging and pleading. But I know the pain of losing them, and the pain of having to make that decision to let them go. It hurts...that part I won't be looking forward to. My heart goes out to you.

They are both so cute.

My last was a Samoyed. (pure white with luxurious fur)
The Males are a fair bit bigger than Females in this breed but He was big for a Male even. He had the most personality I have ever seen in a Dog and I've had some great Ones including a Dalmation.

Hope you don't mind me sharing this One little story about Him in your thread Lisa.

The neighbour had purchased an old classic car, MG midget open top, and was in His garden giving it a good valet.
It was a summers Day and I was outside mowing the lawn but had left the front door ajar and the dog came out for a nosy.
Now this Dog had a real thing for cars - if he managed to get in ours we could never get him out.
So stubborn was this dog that often we would just have to leave Him in the car and check up on Him every hour until He was ready to come out in His own time.
Anyway the sight of my neighbours open top MG must have filled his soul with joy because the moment my neighbour turned his back he bounded over there and leapt into the passenger seat (Not drivers which was nearest LOL)
He sat there proudly (looked hilarious tbh) with his tongue hanging out and a big Samoyed smile on his face (Samoyeds often look like they are smiling)

Obviously my neighbour was none to thrilled (A good friend at that time though) and went to drag Him out but my dog snarled at Him (He never bit but was a fearsome sight) so he backed off and asked me to remove Him.
I knew from experience that this was no easy task but remembered that when he had managed to get in our car if I drove somewhere he would often jump out happily when we got back so I said to the neighbour,
"You will have to take him for a drive."

After a bit of discussion and a fair bit of disbelief on my neighbours side he agreed.
Now I have to tell you that the sight of this huge white dog sat in the passenger seat of an open top car, ears and fur folded back in the wind, tongue protruding to one side with what can only be described as a look of pure glee on his face as he is driven off has to be One of the funniest things I have ever witnessed.

Five minutes later I see them reappear back from around the corner, my Dog wearing the exact same expression of joy, before they pull into his drive.
He actually waited until my neighbour opened the drivers door before calmly getting out his side and casually walking past me only giving me a cursory glance and going back inside the house.

Alan (neighbour) if you ever read this - sorry mate but I have dined out on that for Years.
The Day we lost that Dog was One of the saddest of my life and I still keep Him in mind now and can't bear to have another dog even though it was well over Ten Years ago since we lost him.

I really must stick a piccy of him in my profile.

My neighbor had two samoyeds, a mother and son. They would come up every morning and wait for the bus with my kids and in the afternoons they were there to greet them when they got off the bus. The kids would give them a hug and then they'd trot off home. I live in the country and they'd "travel" approximately a half mile every day.

They do take a lot of training and time, but I have lots of time. The bozos I have now are pretty intelligent. Weeks of walking them, when they were babies, around the perimeter of my property. They can be trusted to not leave the yard, although some days I wish they would *joking!*. Also, on bath days, all I have to say is "Cassie, bath day!" She will automatically go sit in the bath tub and wait for me. The rest will then follow suit. The only thing I don't like is the ever increasing price of dog food, I go through approximately 100 lbs a month in dry food and about 30 cans of wet food and 20 lbs of doggie biscuits. They don't get 'people' food, and will actually spit it out if you try to force them. And they won't eat food, even doggie treats, from people they don't know.

Nine is a good age for a child to start a bond with a pet. She will have her baby to talk things over with through her teen years. Like when she gets upset with mom, a boyfriend, or just needs someone to hug. She's lucky, she has a mom who will help teach her how to care and love her new baby. Not all kids are that lucky.

They make the best pets ever! They don't bark, they are clean, they are very smart and contrary to what some people believe, (we get asked a lot if we have to exercise them often) they are quite lazy.

Oh and they can be cat trained...we have an 8 year old cat, it took a few weeks for both greyhounds to realize she wasn't a rabbit , but now they don't bother with her.

I had been gonna comment on marriage re: the bolded part....but I'll hush. I hear ya though. Ahhhhh.....nice to be on my own. Funny thing is, that now that my little one's dad and I are split (three years), we actually get along fine, and act like adults towards each other. Go figure.

Hey Laurie, good to see you back. Trust me, her attitude is growing like a bad weed too.

Honestly though, she's a great kid...just getting to that age where she wants to assert some independence and make some of her own decisions (which is cool, long as they agree with mine......J/K).

Rusty, of course it's fine to share that story. I know we have alot of cat lovers here on the forum....I was hoping we had some doggie ones as well. That story of yours had me rolling and chuckling to myself as I read it last night. I was visualizing your buddy/neighbour's face, as you told him he'd have to take a drive with his "passenger". Ha ha......say WHAT?

She is such a handful Ksech, lol. Typical puppy. We have our good days and our bad days. She's still having "accidents". I guess that's to be expected, but I have had pups before that took to paper/outdoor training within days, so I do get a bit frustrated. She is very young, only just eight weeks the day we got her so I'm trying to be patient.

I'm up very early in the mornings, so the responsibility of taking her out, etc. has fallen to me. As well as looking after her all day. My daughter finishes school next Thursday, and she will be taking a more active role in the care, including getting up in the morning with her. She's the one who begged for a puppy so she's the one who will have to learn to take care of her. I don't think she had any idea of how much is really involved. As with most children her age, she figured it was all fun and games.

I have to leave her alone today while I go out....that should be interesting, lol. I'm gonna pick her up some more toys and stuff to try and keep her occupied and help with the chewing. I don't think I've ever had a pup that insisted on putting everything in her mouth. And I mean everything.

All that said, I love her. And I do think she is going to be a great dog, once we get past this. She's loving, playful and intelligent. But she's willful as well..I can see it. Going to have to be really strict with her.

Some ideas for 'cheap' around the house toys...

Old socks knotted in the middle.
Hand straps to old purses (mine LOVED my leather purses, including new ones LOL)
old baby receiving blankets cut into strips and then small knots down the length.

I can imagine how much of a handful she is. I'm glad to hear both of you are doing fine. I love puppies, it's just the end result I have problems with sometimes LOL. My smallest weighs 60 lbs. and the largest weighs 140lbs. I hurry home from work each morning to spend 4 1/2 hours of quality time with them (now that the weather is a tad better we can take walks). And thanks to my son, who had brought home 2 dogs, neither neutered or spayed, I ended up with 7 large dogs Then son moves out and can't take any with him LOL The only downfall to this is the fact they are several years apart in age. The younguns are now 8 years old, their mommy is 10 and their daddy is 11. My grandpa dog is 16. BUT, I know I will go out and get another when all is said and done.

Yes, please keep up with the progress reports. I'm sure others will be interested as well

Just a quick update on Tango. She is doing really well, and we finally have her completely housebroken. It was a challenge, but she hasn't had an accident in the house in about two weeks now. The next step now is to get her to realize that she can't just piddle whenever she feels like it (paper or not). She needs to control herself a bit more, and let us know when she wants to go out.

Other than that, she's been a real joy. She's a great pup and I don't regret getting her for a second. I'm gonna try and get some new pics this week...and post them if I can.

I made the decision to have my grandpa dog put down 2 weeks ago. He was having problems breathing. It took me a month to be able to accept it was in HIS best interests, and I miss him alot (I had the pleasure of his company for 16 years). The other critters know he is gone and are just starting to come back to being "normal" pains in the butts. Thank you so much for asking

Aww Ksech, I'm so sorry to hear that. But it sounds like you did the right thing, hard as it may be. That's the part of having dogs that I absolutely dread. I'll send some good thoughts your way, and hopefully all your other "companions" will keep you occupied enough, that his passing will go a little easier.
