So last night I tape the VMA's so we can watch as a family another time (we were watching red sox win :D )

Thankfully there's news stories all over the internet of Miley Scank Cyrus. I now will have to fast forward through her performance. Here are some things she did on stage. Fake fingered herself, fake fucked a foam finger and a new term to me 'twerking" while wearing a nude colored bikini.

Sure the VMA's have a bit of a racey theme sometimes, Madonna kissing Brittany (big deal) Gaga wearing a meat outfit (big deal) I'm sure there's more...but this is an all time low!!!

If you get the chance look up the picture of Will Smith and his families reaction to watching Cyrus perform, that picture says it all.

What I was hoping for is a fun night of music with my husband and daughter, (Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake was really what we were interested in) now has turned out that I have to research the show before we watch it.

Any thoughts on this? Am I being a prude? Over protective? (my daughters 11)

Now watching the Sox win is something good to do as a family:thumbsup:, but watching MTV, umm not so much. I don't know where you have been, but MTV is always pretty Lewd. They definitely push the envelope with their "younger" viewership.

I saw the Trojan condom commercial, that was almost like a porn. It had "go out and F*** " written all over it. I guess that's how they keep their show "12 and pregnant" full of prospective candidates for the show. Now I haven't seen a condom commercial in a long time (I think Mtv is one of the only ones that air them) but this commercial was out there. My first reaction was "kids watch this channel" what sickos. But yes it then got even better with Miley Cyrus. Im sure there are plenty of teenage boys that will be using that as their porn to get off.

Now its not very shocking that Cyrus did that. That's what society has come to, and I swear that this play a huge role in the decline of todays youth, and the world. When you put all the bad things that stars do in the media,( eg. drugs, dui's, stealing, violence, being a whore) kids look up to that or at the very least don't think their is anything wrong with it. How many young kids want to be like Lindsey Lohan? Tons of them. How many kids went and did coke after Paris Hilton got caught with it? Tons of them. I could go on and on. Media, Social media, and the world becoming a very small place because of technology is what has led to the collapse of ethics and morals, and its only getting worse.

Do you remember back in the day that you couldn't say bitch or ass on tv? Big bird now teaches the kids how to spell those words on the show.

No your not being over protective because you actually recorded the show thinking that is was ok to watch. 11 is way too young to watch MTV, I am an adult and get offended by some of the things they do.

The best thing to do is home school your daughter, don't let her have a phone, don't teach her to use a computer, and let her know you will release her from captivity in 10 years.

My thoughts on this ..... She is not making any statements, not stirring controversy...Not shocked at all. All she is doing is making us laugh at her. So enjoy hearing the laughter, it beats sadness anyday.

Well I'm 42 and don't watch mtv but once a year, and daughter only watches what we watch on tv, she has a tv in her playroom but it only has very few channels, mtv isn't one of them.

The rest of your post makes sense, well except the last line. :D

I thought I was reasonably broad minded but that vid of the show was cringeworthy in its vulgarity....not much sensuality there imo, with Miley Cyrus outrageously working her booty, touching herself and finding new uses for a foam finger on both herself and the male singer with whom she she was performing.

I have to agree that this "anything goes" culture of entertainers trying to out-do their rivals is resulting in some pretty questionable television. The expressions on Will Smith and his family's faces said it all.

over the top yes, but it worked - people are talking about it and sex sells

I doubt if teenagers would even know what MTV or VH1 is / was now.

Times have moved on and thanks to that, awful concept that was started in the 80's clearly a white collared setup that deliberately refused to play songs by African Americans until big stars like David Bowie voiced concerns that then morphed into cartoon stuff and reality shows and now this.

Pure dross and irrelevant now, aim that satellite transponder towards the sun and press the rocker booster.

I was shocked as someone who knew this girl long before Hanna Montana , her Dads farm , which is huge in Thompson Station backs up to my Sisters farm and her in laws. I met her many times with my sister as my nieces and she played and rode horses together as children.

Billy Ray is very much loved in our adjoining communities and does so many charitable things , he is a real down to earth person , I do not believe it is Billy but her Agent who has helped push Miley (not her real name) into doing these over the top stunts. I have seen a sweet child turn into a little monster even when she played Hanna Montana , she has shunned all her childhood friends for the Hollywood crowd and it is now showing in her behavior.

My one niece and she went out a few of times when she was home a couple of years back when she was in the area filming a scene for a movie, my niece said stardom sure did go to (Blanks) head !

It just sickens me !!

As much as a parent does best by their children they have to let them live their life even if they don't agree.

Let's hope he is there when she crashes and burns, no doubt this will happen.

What happened to actual talent?

Bruno Mars sounds just as good live as he does on his cds. Actually I prefer him live. Whitney Houston comes to mind, she is possibly the best singer of my generation, don't ever remember her having to resort to being "whore-ish" Celine Dion is another one, just talent there. I'm sure there's more, but just off the top of my head.

If I had two teenage daughters that conducted themselves in this manner would I be happy, I don’t think cold showers and hormones is actually, really the point it’s about showing respect, acting with respect and educating respect to the younger mind when you are in the position to do so.

The show stinks yes of outside influence to garner more popularity in the short term but as seen before it ends in tears, regret and isolation.

Possibly a bad example she had it all but the shot to fame declined to a shot in the arm. I love her songs but always (now) get a bad feeling over the way she and the industry (and possibly a partner choice) got it all wrong.

Yes, I understand her drug problem and choice of partner, I was only talking about talent. That she had.

I don't know Miley Cyrus at all, but Justin Timberlake performance was amazing.

Oh good! Can't wait to watch.

I felt a sigh of relief knowing that my boys did not take this seriously, or think it was cool, hot or trendy. WE are talking about this, THEY are NOT. They don't watch these things to learn about respect, education or anything like that. They want to know what to spend there part time work wages on.. they won't be buying any of her music, movies , posters etc. They think she is a joke and so do most of the boys that accidently get a glimpse of her performance. This is not new to them, they have seen a lot of controversial, political, stange types of music,, this does not even make them blink. When the teenage girls hear the teenage boys laughing AT this, they won't want to be associated with it either. Thanks Miley.: )

I never tried to censor the world for my kid when she was younger. But we had one TV, and whatever was on was watched together for the most part. We didn't have cable, so there was not a daily dose of music videos.

While it may be crude and tasteless, if you watch together you have a chance to express your opinions of such behaviour. And since you had enough foresight to videotape it, after a few moments you can turn to your daughter and say "Had enough of this junk? Let's just skip forward to the good parts."

Any questions she might have, answer as honestly as you can. Feel free to discuss the young woman's current troubles and misbehaviour, and tell her you hope she has more sense and thinks better of herself.

I was relieved that my child chose to wear army boots and black skirts down to the ground instead of mini skirts and belly tops. Remember fights with my own mother over how short my skirts could be.

At 11 she's listening to your ideas and opinions in a way that stop listening just a few short years from now. Get her ready for the world that is, and tell her to always strive for the world as it should be.

I don't think you are a prude, but your time to shelter your daughter might be a litte past best before date. They visit friends, and access the internet from smartphones and libraries.

I'd probably be in jail still had I had to home school my daughter. Or perhaps the mental hospital might be willing to release me by now. But there's lots of time to teach your kids the things that school doesn't teach them, and quite frankly isn't the job of the schools.

Great post. I never thought of it that way!!! Maybe that's what we will do.

Yeah picket white fences, cheesy grins, and defenceless aptitude coupled with cable tv?

I wonder what Santa brings this year....

Same here just a reflection on how things can change from a magnificent flower that bloomed to something that is akin to a weed discarded into the trash.

I have to say I used to love MTV.... anyone else remember when they actually played music videos? Oh well... I haven't even slowed down to catch a glimpse of MTV while channel surfing in years and years. I won't watch their awards show either.

As for what I've seen and read about the awards show and Little Miss Skank.... it's sad, really. Performers reduced to trying to out-skank the others. I'm not easily shocked or offended, but such idiocy is quite embarrassing.
