Suggestion Meister Meeting - who's going? carpooling and other comments

Really really would love to come. I really love London and I really love Casinomeister, so those two combined would make a great trip.
Actually Ryanair flies quite inexpensive from Finland. So it is not at all impossible but hard to organize with work and all that stuff..

Also the hotels in London are not too cheap . Any good idea about inexpensive hotels (<120€ a night(for two)) in London?

I've stayed at the St. Giles a number of times. It's not bad, but it's a relatively small room. :D

At booking.com it's listed for €108 a night during that week.

It's one tube stop away, or about a ten minute walk at a brisk pace. :D

Just out of curiosity, I went on travelocity to check prices and it was not as bad as I thought it might be.

Depart from Newark, NJ on 2/1 to Heathrow then leave London on 2/6 back to Newark, between $1300 and $2000 including hotel and airfare. Pretty good considering how close in the future it is to book such a thing. Would probably be considerably less if booked a month or two ago.

I've never been overseas but I like going away for a couple of days someplace new and different so maybe next year. Maybe grab another North East US member and have at it.

I always use Booking.com - I think they are the best.

Trick is obviously not pick one in central London - but a bit further out. Then you can pick one up from around €40/night for 2 people.
The tube (underground) system is great & you should be able to get in to the Meister Meet & back for about €10 each.
I booked one for the LAC conference a few days later out near Earls Court (the venue) for £40.50/night. That's around €50.

There is a scheduled tube strike on Tuesday, so planning to take the tube then may not be the best idea.

That SUCKS!
Good job I'll be coming in to Charring Cross - which is only a 5 minute walk from the Meister Meeting venue....

The tube strike is an unwelcome complication. It doesn't clash with a great nephew's birthday this year, so I was planning on coming (never been to Waxy's before). I normally get the train in to Waterloo, and pick up the overground at Clapham Junction (rather than go right in to Waterloo). I was told last time I went in that I should pick up the tube from Richmond, rather than Clapham Junction, when I went with my niece to the science museum. I will now have to see if it can be done without the tube, as unless there is a cave in to demands, the strike will go ahead.

Perhaps Bryan should invite Boris Johnson (the mayor), as he is very keen on public transport and cycling, and he won't be able to look green by taking the tube:D

From Waterloo to Waxy's is only 1.2miles = not a very long walk (unless it's pissing down!).
Google:

On that page, ask for WALKING (not driving) directions to W1D 6DD (Waxy's)

No excuses! :drink:

Memphis Tn / Tunica Ms ?

This would be my vote for any US Meister meeting in the future, affordable lodging , so much to see and B/M casinos 15 miles away and the Beer and mixed drinks are FREE.

They have huge meeting halls and convention centers in both cities along with so much do , Beal street, Graceland , Civil Rights Museum go 10 miles West into Ark. if you enjoy the Grayhound races and if you love the blues or jazz you are at the right spot.

I hope you will entertain this idea as well Bryan .

Google seems to expect me to walk on water! Jesus Christ, I am not, that is unreasonable. It then tells me that when I get there, Waxy's has been demolished:eek:, but his little sister is fine:)

However, what's in that little fruit machine arcade I see on street view;)

No you idiot - you have to walk along the railway line. Don't go between the rails though, there's a third little rail to the side of the load-bearing rails that you can walk on - should keep your feet nice & warm too!
If you don't fancy that, just hope it's so cold that the Thames freezes over - then you CAN walk on water! :p
Or... bring an inflatable canoe in your back pack...
The final option is to walk across the pedestrian Hungerford Bridge with runs alongside the railway - bit boring that way though.

'Charring' Cross?? Has there been a fire there recently?

More decisions,

Do I use my Spin Palace back pack or the Ruby Fortune one:)

I will also have to get a work forecast from the workers who have started the insulation and cladding of the house, they seem to need me to be in to let them have electricity via an extension lead, and open the gate for the back garden (I can do the gate before I leave if this is all they need, and close it when I get back).

If it's chucking down, they won't work that day, but it will also be a bad day to travel given that there is no tube, and that walk will make be soaking wet even using the bridge that doesn't show up very clearly on the map.

You could also get a bus.. a quick tfl search tells me that you can get from waterloo to leicester square on the 176.

Although with the kind of traffic you get in that part and the weird route it takes you probably will be quicker walking... still, the options there if it's pissing it down!
