Hold & Nudge - Why did it never catch on online?

Every high street casino and amusement arcade was and is still full of machines with hold and nudge features, OXO, Golden Game, Party Time but these two features seem to be very rare with online game makers.

Why did online game makers choose to move away from the traditional arcade style hold and nudge features on their games.

Could you imagine a hold and nudge feature on say Bonanza?

Blueprint have reintroduced that style of game to an extent; try the Ted Pub Slot variant. Feature trails, trail holds and the like.

I wonder if nudges are less common if only because the chance of massive wins is much higher than on a pub fruit machine. A nudge is pretty much a guaranteed win. The closest we have is in the likes of Book Of Oz where you can pay to respin a single reel.

I'm not sure what difference it would make. It'd still pay 96%, still have the same reel maps and all you'd effectively do is manually nudge down a symbol or two that would have appeared anyway without the nudge. In other words, say you had 3 rows visible on reel 1 and diamonds on the next 4 reels, and nudged the diamond down on reel 1 to get a 25x 5OAK win, all you would be doing is emulating a spin whereby if the nudge hadn't occurred, would have given you 4 rows on reel 1 anyway and dropped the 5OAK diamonds in naturally. Some games just aren't appropriate for nudges. If you look at Holy Diver though, the expanding reels coming into play after the retrigger effectively do the same thing, by making more symbols available from above.

Nudges really are the domain of low-tech 3-reelers for a good reason. Unless you count gimmicks on games like Untamed Panda where the 3rd. scatter may nudge down, another completely pointless animation as the game was always going to give you the trigger on that particular spin anyway.

There have been in excess of 100 AWP type games made available, Bar-X numerous, Happy Fruits etc. JPM games, Astra, Mazooma and a few others have been created for online play, but really there isn't the market for them. People can play those in arcades as you say and they're boring in general, whereas the online platform gives players and developers the opportunity for more creative and complex slots. Astra for example were taken over Novomatic and that's why there are versions of their basic games online, but many casinos don't bother with them.

I think we need a special online amusement arcade site, one which is presented as follows:

'High Street Slots'

There will be a mobility scooter parked by the lobby. Cackling grannies will be sitting in a row along the Electrocoins. There will be a shadowy figure wandering about, only playing on benefits day each week. He will cadge cigarettes and go round the lobby checking slot trays for forgotten coins. There will be 'knock-off bonuses' where a local alchy or smackhead purveys his shoplifted goods. A 'reserved' notice can randomly appear on any machine where the addict who has lost their dosh will then run from the lobby to place their phone in Cash Converters before returning. There will be 'shark shadows' where one or two lads are purporting to play a machine, 1 spin every 2 minutes as they slyly look over their shoulders waiting to pounce on the 'happy' machine which has just swallowed the mobile phone and giro. Overlay all this with the shriek of Electrocoin nudges to complete the ambience.

I'll run it by MT Secure or White Hat Gaming.....:D:laugh::laugh:

Its more likely down to the fact that those type of AWPs in arcades are compensated, making those games totally random with holds and nudges is way more complex, unless you go down the scratch card route which a lot of people also have issues with, it probably makes the whole game recovery process more complex too.

Probably 90% of the arcade players would not play the same games on a non compensated format, and probably only a small % of existing online players would play them so wouldnt be worth the investment to make them?

With the what’s the point of that scenario. I have thought that with some of the latest releases that have that multiplier reel on the right hand side (x1, x2 etc). A 20p win becomes a 60p etc. It’s just tiresome bo^*^x and a complete waste of time as like you say it’s a long winded way of giving you that win.

Another question, slightly off topic......land based casinos have a game called Top Dollar. When you get a top dollar symbol on the last reel, you get 4 offers of different monies, up to 1000X wager, the first three you can refuse..the 4th you must accept.
These games are VERY popular...even though they are quite old you will usually find a line-up to play them.
I have yet to see such a game on a site, such as...say VS. What are they waiting for??

There are many games online which have that mechanic, the Deal Or No Deal ones, and there are many slots incorporating a feature which has that format, like that dreadful Sean Kelly's Storage Auctions...

Dunover, I am seeking a reel game, with a $1 or $2 wager, that has the bars and 7's, and such a feature on reel 3. Are you familiar with Top Dollar? Some games do come close to the mechanic, but a Top Dollar clone or Top Dollar itself is long overdue for us at home players :) You are a walking encyclopedia of slots, so if anyone will know it will be you.

No, I cannot see an online version of it anywhere in my records. IGT have had Triple Diamond, Triple Red Hot 777, Super Times Pay, Super Times Pay Hot Roll, Monopoly Multiplier, Double Diamond, Five Times Pay, Champion Raceway, Arabian Riches, 3-Reel Hold Up and variations thereof, but not this one - that I am aware of. @trancemonkey may know different though.
I know Wagerworks may have had some 3-reel games similar to Electrocoin ones when IGT acquired them in 2005, but these are UK arcade rubbish.

Bally have hardly any 3-reelers online, Feline Queen being a rare one.

I cannot find anything similar to the Top Dollar mechanic.

So I am saying you cannot play Top Dollar online. :(

Think you're right.

Hold and Nudge didn't take off because it is much harder (although not impossible) to make it work in the framework of a lot of jurisdictions. Also, under some it would class as having an element of skill game because if you always held stupid reels you would have a very low RTP. That's not to say it cannot be done, but we would have to state the maximum RTP and then the best strategy - if that was easy to write down as it might not be as obvious as you think. And clearly compensation is not allowed online... so you can't compensate for someone doing stupid things...

I will forward your comments to the interactive team :)

The issue with Top Dollar style bonuses is they don't really work online, you need the bells and whistles you get in the casino for it to really work. Online can have so many more exciting bonus rounds this simply wouldn't take off. Well, that's IMHO ;)

Still popular after almost a decade in the B&M casinos, and with all the slot styles/clones etc....it frankly surprised me that there is nothing like it online. My mom would be in her glory!!!

Core Gaming have a 3-Reel slot which triggered on last reel a special feature... it's sounds like a little bit of that what you need
try it... this slot is also available on Videoslots

Slot: "Jackpotz"
Provider: "Core Gaming"

To add to my original question why do online casinos not have secret combinations that trigger features or wins ie Golden Game if you held the middle jackpot/bar symbol would sometimes trigger the bonus as would and OXO if you held thrill zeros it would sometimes trigger oxo bonus as would leaving the hold to auto move itself.

When Sky Vegas brought the Golden Game to their casino it had none of these features and meant it was just a standard 3 reel game with no hidden tactics, would having hidden moves on an online game be classed as not entirely fair?

Because it has to be random and hit a certain RTP. Golden Game was compensated so it didn't matter if you knew it or not... if you knew it you just got the money faster, but if you didn't it just kept money for later.

You simply can't do that online, no matter what the tin foilers claim
