Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.

My 8 year old grandsons' version of what Martin Luther King Jr Day is...

"Grammy, do you know today is Martin Luther King Jr Day? Today is his birthday! He was a black man who wrote a speech called "I have a dream". His dream was so everyone would treat everyone alike. So guess what? Because of him, my friend can sit with me at lunch and we don't have to be afraid to be friends! Isn't that great?"

That's absolutely fantastic!! When you have an experience like what your grandson said to you, it makes you proud to be an American.

I am proud of your grandson. You can tell it's from a great upbringing.
You can be any color you like on this earth because we are all here as a whole.
& we don't need anyone to be prejudiced in our lives.

When my children were little I once told them, "Everyone is the same on the inside. We all bleed the same color, the only difference is, God chose to give each of us different wrapping paper on the outside so we wouldn't be plain and boring."

Unfortunately, prejudice is still alive and rears its ugly head. My older grandson had a bout with this last year in school. And it wasn't from a young man, but a young girl. What I found appalling was the fact that they allowed the young girl to go without "punishment" whilst my grandson had to endure 3 days of lunch detention because he "verbally" attacked her in response. The young girl admitted to the principal she had made the derogatory comments and it was allowed., my grandson was told he should have simply ignored her...
