Hacker At Large--WATCH YOUR CARDS!

I just rechecked my credit card that I use for online games and there were 4 charges that I had not made. One for over $456.00 from Dublin, One for $71.42 from Cleveland, Ohio and the snooper charge of $1.00 from Utah. These were in 'pending' as of yesterday June 20.

The person at the bank said there were others that had already been refused, because I purposely only keep a small amount in the account at any one time, but there is a back up account of $250.00, and that too had been used up, so they had cancelled due to lack of funds.

Fortunately I caught it before any damage had been done, but the only ones that have that number are the processors at the casinos I play on line.?!?

I haven't really used it since June 10th so someone has been biding their time, but too bad for them because I caught it.

Minor tweak of the thread title to avoid confusion with official Casinomeister Warnings. Apologies for any inconvenience.

The I'd say 'hacking' is probably unlikeliest of two scenarios, this is more like a 'cloning' of details held by a third-party regarding your personal details/card number. This can be done by bent staff at the processor or simple lack of security in their data storage.
If it were hacking, then it will either be your own individual PC or worse the processor has been hacked, in which case it will be a disaster and will affect many other users too.
With increased security nowadays most card fraud tends to be as a result of leaked details passed on to criminal gangs as opposed to the basic hack.
Either way I'm glad you spotted it, I've had it done twice in the past and it always leaves you wondering 'how?'

Heres a thought, the small handheld card readers which are becoming commonplace for logging into online banking services, these could be used to generate a one-time card number allowing different details to be used for each individual online transaction. If these details were then leaked not only could multiple transactions using the same one-time card number be immediately blocked but the source of the leak could be quickly and simply established as well. Using some kind of check bit you could even confirm if the leak was at your side (pre transmission - perhaps a virus infected laptop), or the merchants (rogue employee, bad processor etc).

Agreed its not the most elegant solution, so lets put wifi/bluetooth in the card reader and have it transmit the one-time details to your laptop or phone at the push of a button, so the convenience factor isn't lost as well. Its not hard to come up with these ideas and I cannot imagine the costs involved would be prohibitive either - especially next to the cost of the fraud.

Thanks for reminding me... I haven't checked my CCs (never used for gambling) in a week or two. And even worse, I haven't checked my prepaid card account in months - haven't been using it and had forgotten.

Going to go do that, now.

Too many cards used only for online casinos getting 'hit' again.

Side note... I'm also afraid to use the POS (card slider thingy) at the stores, and paper checks are verified thru the same system, so I don't like to do that, either. And I don't like to carry cash... but nowadays I do. Sheesh... This is ridiculous....

I hear you! It seems the bad guys are higher tech than the rest of us---can't keep up with them.
