General Election 2019 thread

So how do we think Johnson and his cronies are doing so far?

(Pinched from Twitter.)

--------------------

Apart from failure to secure food supply, failure to control the pandemic, failure to get us working, failure to get us travelling, stealing our money on an epic scale, dividing us bitterly, and killing 150k of us, it's been a top government so far.

Apart from alienating the Scots, alienating the Irish, alienating all of Europe, making buying from Europe a costly nightmare, making selling to Europe a costly nightmare, and establishing the UK as a bad-faith actor on the world stage, it's been a great show so far.

Apart from abandoning the norms of the unwritten British constitution, lying to the Queen, thwarting our sovereign parliament, overtly breaking laws, clamping down on protest, brushing away legal and electoral scrutiny - oh and lying all day long - it's been a decent govt so far.

Apart from starving the NHS of funds and offering claps instead of cash for the heroes who risked, and even gave, their lives; apart from throwing families into dependency on food banks and denying hungry kids food until challenged by a footballer, the regime's done us proud.

Apart from boycotting challenging BBC programmes even in a national emergency, attacking the BBC, defunding the BBC, infiltrating the BBC, muzzling the BBC, boycotting C4 News, selling Channel 4, and giving instant access to a new right wing channel, it's been upright, open govt.

This is the difference between the UK and the Republic of Choppers - the electorate will be able to democratically remove Boris and the Tories if they so wish in 2024.
Much in the same way that the voters democratically decided that they wanted to leave the EU, something that still seems to annoy the tits of many remoaners who think democracy is only their when it suits them.

Edited to add - But I am still certain this is still a hell of a lot better than what the country would have been like if Corbyn and his cronies were in power, we would all be living in his marxist empire and watching as his hare brained schemes came to fruition.
Thank God for democracy!!!

Ahhhh yes because prior to 2024 we never had general elections in the UK, thank goodness for Brexit.

As for Corbyn, just imagine the calamity he could have caused with his free broadband for everyone. Far better to have 150,000 dead due to Covid under one of the most mis-managed responses to the pandemic in the world.

(Also, 'it would have been worse under the other lot' isn't exactly a shining endorsement, and is entirely beside the point anyway because the Tories won and the condition things are in is on them.)

Mixed feelings re boris and his pals, some of that list like the last one regarding the bbc and c4, don't concern me at all as they're mostly stooges anyway trying to force feed the public an agenda; however Minghella created Doc Martin which is a fairly decent comedy so I give him credit for that, he can't be all that bad. Targeting whistleblowers and journalists with the threat of 14 years jail for 'leaks' is a worrying development, potential for criminalising telling the truth.

This is the thing, we have GE's all the time, and Corbyn had a chance to take control but he was not elected. The Tories were elected, democratically, with their manifesto going in front of the country.
Governments aren't judged until they have run their course, then democracy decides.
Bit like referendums, the country decides and the decision is made, though some still whinge many years after it that they dont like the decision.

As for Corbyn, if he had been elected the country would have been a lot worse off, remember that the cornerstone of his plan for the future is nationalise everything, make it more unappealing for any kind of investment, and last time I looked that doesnt fit in with the EU so your dream of a federal Europe controlled by France and Germany would still be dead.
I would take Johnson and all of his cronies any day above a man who glorifies terrorism, believes that the killing of the police, the army or innocent civilians is all ok if the cause is a united Ireland or a free Palestine.
I would take Boris any day over a man who is so anti-semetic that he revels in Isrealis being killed by Palestinians, I would choose a Tory any day over Corbyn who wants this country to become another Venezuela or Cuba, a third world backward nation.
Yes, in my opinion the other crowd would have been a much worse choice, but my view doesnt matter as the majority of UK voters choose to ignore the chance of free broadband and preferred to get Brexit done..

So how do we think Johnson and his cronies are doing so far?

A TV producer/scripter media type with anti-Tory views!! Well I never! You'll be telling me the BBC luvvies are mostly labourites next!

I mean, Johnson has killed 150k of us! Imagine us living in an EU country, USA or any other which haven't even recorded one Covid death, luckily because they don't have Johnson in charge. Before Johnson the SNP were only a sideshow, the Tories ruled there and they loved the English, what on earth has Johnson done in 19 months to change that? Remarkable!

Bless him, his hands must be stained black with all those 720 pages of forms he had to print & create that EU importers/exporters require.

As for the proroguing of Parliament, wasn't that decided 'unlawful' AFTER he did it rather than WHEN he did it, by 7 bent judges created by the Labour party?

As for clamping down on protest, that was a real bollocks-up by him, as he was clearly trying to get his kill rate to 200,000 during lockdown and stopping mass gatherings thwarted him, so a bit of an own goal there!

I hear there is an arrest warrant out for him after putting a pair of Carries knickers over his head and robbing Barclays in Charing Cross road to pay for his flat refurb, so yeah that was a bit dodgy.

Next thing, he'll be cavorting with Venezuelan Marxist dictators who have destroyed a wealthy oil economy so quickly that thousands of kids have died and other families flee daily to Colombia to try and get medicines and food, but hopefully the security services will have arranged an accident by then.....

Shows how far standards have dropped with the bbc, putting this up as a topic worthy for national discussion. I won't bang on but it kind of makes me feel annoyed that these people are being paid out of the public purse, other than never watching live tv there is nothing we can do.

If the liberals in power weren't a bunch of hypocritical degenerates extreme porn wouldn't be being made and freely accessible in the 1st world as it is. Not exactly general election related, but it's all tied up in politics and views on life and its value, human beings as a commodity, ones deeply mentally damaged or drug addicted at that.

Rip Austin Mitchell, former labour mp. Always brought some colour to politics and came across as thoughtful and his own man. Also not politics but sad news comedian Sean Lock died aged only 58, good solid guy with a quirky unique sense of humour, Rip.
Carrot in a box world champion.
I really enojoyed his style of comedy.
Didnt know he had cancer, sad to see the news about him today.

A new Labour government has been in power for less than two years.

Already they have announced tax rises, inflation is up and rising, energy suppliers are going bust due to poor regulation and oversight, and there is talk of a 'new winter of a discontent'. To compound the problem millions of families are facing extreme hardship in the winter months as their benefits are cut to well below poverty levels (a £20 cut in Universal Credit hitting the most vulnerable), at the same time as gaps appear on supermarket shelves up and down the country.

The government's business secretary admits in an interview that the UK faces a 'difficult winter' ahead.

British businesses are struggling with the Labour government's bungled Brexit that has left companies across the UK reeling from a double whammy of new costs and an avalanche of new red tape, both of which they were promised would not exist. Many companies have ceased trading with the EU already, many have gone bankrupt, and many more warn they won't survive another year.

The Covid pandemic continues to blight the UK, which has now dropped to 11th place in EU rankings for percentage of population double vaccinated, as both high case numbers and deaths continue to place unbearable demands on the NHS, the UK still has one of the highest death rates due to Covid in the world.

UK borrowing, already at all-time highs, overshoots even pessimistic forecasts as the nation's interest payments on debts rise yet further. Debt expressed as a percentage of the UK's GDP has now reached levels last seen in the 1960s.

In addition to all this, an impending nation-wide CO2 shortage further threatens food security as worldwide increases in wholesale gas prices, which the UK is particularly vulnerable to, make critical businesses in the food supply chain uneconomical to maintain - the government is now in crisis talks with the affected businesses. The UK's vulnerability to wholesale gas price rises has been known for years but no action has been taken.

I bloody knew this would happen once Labour got back into power, let's hope the Tories win the next election and get this shit sorted out, a competent force in government.

Oh, wait, hang on....... The Tories won in December 2019 and they've been in power for eleven years? Sheesh. Must all be Covid then, let's blame that, 'cause it's definitely not that they're shit.

Why doesn't the huge meat/drinks industry together with the supermarkets sort out the co2 shortage issues. The market is dysfunctional if the govt have to pay £ to keep it running.

I've not been very impressed with the tories since they got in in 2010, but the alternative is uninspiring and would be a constant source of concern regarding extreme liberal beliefs, forcing them on society.

Yes the Tory Goverment is shit. And yet....

They would STILL BE CONSIDERABLY LESS SHIT than a Labour Government would be.

I mean, imagine having this lot in charge of the country (shudder alert incoming)......

Sir Keir Palaver as PM  (oh please)
Diane Flabbott as Minister for....well, anything. The only ministry she should be in of charge is the Ministry of Race-Baiting, Amnesia, Bullshitting, Incompetence and Doting.

Or RABID for short.

Jeremy CorBin as Minister for Northern Ireland  (stop it, you're hurting my ribs)
Angela Rayner as Minister for Education  (oh fuck, now I have broken a rib and have to go to A & E)

And I haven't even mentioned Dawn Butthead, David Lamey and Emily Dingleberry yet.
Nor the creation of a new cabinet position....Minister For The Continuation of Rampant Anti-Semitism.

So yeah......I hate to use my favourite political analogy again Choppers but.....

A Tory Government and a Labour Government are two cheeks from the same arse.
But at least the Tory arse cheek will have CONSIDERABLY LESS shit sticking to it.
The Tories also might have the decency to at least ATTEMPT to wipe the shit off its arse cheek.

Meanwhile, Labour would be too busy getting Flabbott, Butthead and Lamey to protest against the use of WHITE toilet paper to actually get round to using ANY COLOUR of toilet paper, because quite literally everything has to be spun into a potential racism issue, innit?

But hey, you keep focusing on all the evil that the Tory party does, while blissfully ignoring the fact that your beloved LieBore Party
isn't even good enough in the eyes of LABOUR VOTERS to warrant a change of governing party!

Isn't it funny how silent you have been on the completely embarrassing levels of the total unelectability of LieBore this past decade?

I mean, you do remember how the Tories got into power in the first place, don't you?
It's because "Not Flash, Just Gordon" :puke: Brown didn't have the balls to call an election after Tony "the Iraqi Slayer" BLIAR stood down, before the colossal shitstorm that was the global credit crunch of 2008 hit the fan.
By the time he had no choice but to call an election, he knew he was toast.
And now, the LieBore opposition is so inept, so lacking in star power, that it will probably go down in history as one of the absolute worst periods of opposition ever. A decade of disasterous dickheadedness.

Oh and by the way, I don't even like the f*cking Tories!!

But the fact that even Labour voters think the Tories are a better "less bad" option really says it all.

And yet.....you have NOTHING to say on THAT matter.:cheerleader:

Must be nice living in a glass house on the Isle Of Man, knowing that the UK mainland can't throw any stones back at you....

I think Labour have simply given up: even they don't know what or who they are anymore. Read something about that, oddly candlewax look about him, Starmer having a lower popularity rating that Brown. Talks a lot, says nothing of substance and generally, lacks anything good about him.

Johnson could literally kill someone live on Question Time and still be 10 points ahead of him.

The Tories may be a shower of charlatans but Labour are worse in many ways - inept, without conviction and wet.

OK then, so let's strip away all the bluff, bluster, deflection, denial, abuse and incredibly amusing funny name calling, and unpack your actual rebuttal here.

This seems to me to run along the lines of, 'The Tories are shit but Labour would be worse and it's also Labour's fault for not being electable enough'.

First off, we don't get to judge the performance of the actual government against the performance of an imaginary government that never existed, as we are just off into cloud cuckoo land at that point. Out of the last 42 years there have been 13 years of non-Tory government (and zero in Scotland). Attempting to blame anyone other than the party that's in government for the state things are in is for the fairies, the Tories are in power, and they've been in power for 11 years at this moment in time - so this shit is on them.

That said, I'll admit Labour isn't in a good spot, one of the problems Labour has is that it spends too much time navel gazing and trying to reconcile its left wing with its more centrist types, whilst the Tories just get on with being brutally efficient at winning actual elections. One thing I'll say for 'The Blair Machine' and Alastair Campbell is that they understood you have to win the election before you can actually do anything.

But let's not kid ourselves that the Tory front bench is any kind of superstar line-up, comprised as it is of nodding dogs selected for their deference to the leader rather than any kind of intellectual capacity, and that's before we get on to Johnson himself of course, who has the moral character of a dog caught short on a croquet lawn.

Starmer may not be exciting, but he's a decent man with an impeccable record, when The Daily Mail tried to do a hit piece on him the worst they could find was him buying a field with his own earnings as a barrister for his disabled mum to keep donkeys in. Quite frankly I think it says more about the voters who look at Johnson and think, 'Yeah I'll have some of that as prime minister' than it does about Starmer's fitness for the job. Johnson can't even tell you how many children he's fathered.

And lest we forget that Johnson got a huge vote surge on his promise to 'get Brexit done', which won him a lot of votes in red wall seats and, well, we've seen how that's gone. He got Brexit done so well that the right wing press are still pissing and moaning about the EU on a daily basis, David Frost is still belly-aching about the horrible meany old EU despite us taking back all the control. and even the likes of the Telegraph are calling his 'oven ready deal' out as a ruinous piece of shit. (Still, at least we got the fish back, oh hang on, we didn't even get them either.)

Finally, as for your dig about me living on the IOM and daring to have an opinion about UK politics (which is a common refrain of yours), I was born and bred in Manchester and lived the first 22 years of my life in the UK, I don't lose my right to an opinion because I chose to move to a UK crown dependency with my fiancée (now wife) and build a life here.

Difference is, Boris and Sunak have banrupted the UK because of Covid, Corbyn would've bankrupted it BEFORE Covid.
How the government was supposed to predict Covid, wholesale gas price increases and a whole host of other things I'll never know.
I saw my first empty shelf at the supermarket yesterday - no cans of any soft drinks bar a few artisan energy drinks, plastic bottles only. So I bought a couple of pressurizing caps (that you pump to keep your pop bottles hard and stop the drinks going flat) and got bottled versions instead. Now I could've pissed and moaned instead of working round the issue, blamed lorry drivers, Brexit, Boris Johnson, the EU, Vladimir Putin's gas or Father Abraham but.....

P.S. Bad BAD Boris! How could you:

What is your criteria that defines 'bankrupt'?

Prior to Covid, the UK debt was circa 1.8 Trillion pounds - did you not consider the UK 'Bankrupt' at this stage?

The first sentence of my post reads as follows....

Yes the Tory Goverment is shit.

So before you have even completed the first sentence of your "unpacking of my rebuttal", you have already gone awry.

And I noticed that you totally did not make any comment whatsoever re: Labour's anti-Semitism problem.
But hey.....it is I who is guilty of deflection, denial and abuse.

You reek of double standards even worse than I do.

Deflection is in reference to the vast majority of your earlier post which has essentially nothing to do with what's actually being discussed, and denial is in reference to the implication that people were somehow almost 'forced' to vote Tory because of Labour not being good enough, i.e. the suggestion there was no alternative, when there clearly was. Who knows what chaos Corbyn could have wreaked with his free broadband for everyone eh?

It's like dunover's breezy assertion above that it's OK that the Tories have fucked things up because Labour would have fucked things up sooner, based on zero evidence and presented as a statement of fact, it's a nonsensical position to adopt.

I get that anyone who voted Tory at the last election is probably experiencing some degree of buyer's remorse at the moment, given how apocalyptically awful they have proven to be at everything except lining the pockets of their mates in the business world (and by extension themselves as when ministers and MPs leave government they shuffle into lucrative jobs in the private sector which they've been busily enriching with the taxpayer's money).

I mean, blimey, the one thing they really leant into for the entire general election campaign was 'getting Brexit done' which technically they have but it's now blatantly obvious to anyone with a functioning brain that they fucked that up too.

Hand waving away how shit the Tories are with 'Oh well Labour would have been worse' is intellectually lazy and also an abrogation of responsibility, because at the end of the day they were put into power by the people who voted for them.

When even The Times is running with leaders such as this, you know things are bad.

I just give up with the whole political landscape at the minute they are all self serving arse holes and all in it for monetary gain at the expense of us. Work like a dog and pay my taxes and still get shit on from a great height. Rising bills empty shelves. I think if Labour was in government it would be the same shit because there aren’t any real parties it is an illusion of choice they all work for the elite real masters they are just the puppets.

That moment when we all realise we have an actual clown as a prime minister.

This is the prime minister of the UK's speech to the United Nations on climate change.

Laughs came there none, this is what happens when a gameshow host and after dinner speaker is elevated to the highest office in the UK, you can actually see the moment on his face when he realises no one is laughing any more, and no one is buying his schtick.

A man who has been privileged and indulged his entire life is suddenly gifted neither, and he has nothing, absolutely nothing, except to move onto the 'punchline' about Miss Piggy.

How far we have fallen. Fucking shit jokes about Kermit The Frog.

CONTENT WARNING - This footage might harm your brain.

Still better than a terrorist supporting marxist....

How the government was supposed to predict Covid, wholesale gas price increases and a whole host of other things I'll never know.

They were warned, years ago of this situation with the Gas prices, and guess what - did nothing.

They were warned, years ago of a potential pandemic situation (and let's not forget the fact that it was there for all to see in Italy months prior to here) through operation Cygnus - and guess what, they did nothing.

But still, better that than a Marxist terrorist sympathiser in charge eh?
