Are progressive jackpots still a thing?

I've been playing slots for about a decade, and paying attention to trends - and, I've noticed that progressive jackpots don't really seem like a big deal anymore. I've just started thinking about why that is. I mean, it's not like I really enjoyed them but just wondering where they all went.

Maybe it's something to do with more games from smaller studios becoming popular? Or, developers choosing to focus on other features.

Perhaps the progressive jackpot has bin moved into a superfeature in games these days, like Lil devil hitting the full feature or DOA2 hitting a fullscreen of wilds etc. I just dont believe games really when the jackpot is at 400.000 or so. By maths an obvious (big) number has to be wagered before it even pays.

They're still here but they seem to be more focused into suites of games rather than individual jackpots.

  • Red Tiger has the Must Drop Jackpots available across all of their slots, some sites don't use the jackpot versions though.
  • SG have brought out a kind-of competitor to Red Tiger's which includes a jackpot version of Rainbow Riches. Not available on many games yet.
  • Blueprint have their Jackpot King selection across a whole host of games, big on Sky Vegas
  • Microgaming have Mega Moolah, top progressive out there, which has had a couple of new additions this year in Atlantean Fortunes and Absolootly Mad. They've also got the WowPot which got revamped this year with Wheel of Wishes, Book of Oz WowPot which dropped this week and Sisters of Oz WowPot which drops tomorrow.
  • Eyecon continue to release jackpot versions of most of their games, with a pooled jackpot per site across all of those games they release. More regularly seen on Bingo sites.
  • Playtech have a few ranges - Age Of Gods, the Sporting ones etc.

What we're not seeing much of are releases of standalone progressive jackpot games which don't feed into other games - titles like the original Mega Moolah, Jackpot Giant, Divine Fortune etc. NetEnt are still releasing the odd Asian-themed one but that's about it.

The only thing breaking the mould that I know of is the Jackpot Wars project over at SG, SlotCatalog has this pencilled in for release on 19th of this month. It's an add-on to traditional titles like Jin Ji Bao Xi where you get a fighting robot which you upgrade to look cooler and enter into jackpot tournaments. I'm not completely sold on it but it's certainly something new!

Just loaded up one of those WOWPOT games to have a look as it's in the NEW RELEASES section over at 21Casino.

Look at the bloody RTP!

I know it's shocking, the bloody random games in the pub here are at 90-94%.

And since RTP given over to progressives is effectively lost RTP for most people, most of the time, that really is a random slot with an RTP of 86.7%

That's a good RTP here in land-based Canada casino's, It's even low 80's to no doubt 70's percent RTP here and they still could not make any money pre covid.

Yeah, i really dont see why they need to have them at such a low rtp.

I would understand if jackpot contribution was 10%ish so the total was around 96%
Would make the jackpots grow much quicker, and probably create a popular jackpot-slot.
Guess most people dont have any idea about rtp in the first place, so its not worth it creating a good product.

If it's progressive, they are usually quite low, if my memory serves me right, Mega Moolah is something like 88.12% with 8.8% JP contribution. Of course that one is even much worse. You just have to hit JP when it's big enough and you don't really mind basegame RTP after that :)

edit: For original start of thread, i believe these are not that popular anymore. Some where JP:s not get that huge and you can bit more estimate when it's probable to payout (these are JP:s per certain casino, not gross all of them), some syndicates start play them a lot to trigger that JP (which is not millions and maybe not even 100 000) and sometimes manage.

In general i think these huge volatility games where you can win over 100 000x is enough for most. From these we see screenshots and videos that these exists, some old JP games where it really goes to many millions are just like playing national lottery, from euromillions can get more and i think i have similar chance for both in my lifetime, many of these progressive are also very boring. I think these days when they build these (not really often even i think, don't follow that much) they trigger these JP:s much earlier with smaller winnings to try to keep them interesting, like Divine Fortune which never goes anywhere near to Mega Moolah or Hall of Gods and what all these old games are. I just don't think that even majority here play these a lot (or at least don't see them mentioned in threads) as they are boring as hell and not entertaining like new slots with loads of features etc..

Problem with wowpot is that it hasn’t been won yet so we don’t know the average win like we do for mega moolah games.

its not progressive but I spoke to Hacksaw at ICE this year while they were releasing My Lucky Number. 25 million jackpot, they’re not a big supplier so the 92.56% can be forgiven for the additional insurance cost of such a large fixed jackpot.

Have missed whole release (not following these so closely anymore), yes, i think it's reasonable to have that RTP when you have that size of fixed JP. That sounds much more interesting than progressive ones when for these older games you can be almost certain that it's not triggering itself yet (of course never know) but this could be something to throw few euros there and then. That's like playing real time lottery, sounds really fresh compare to progressive ones.

Are there loads of fixed JP slots made? Apologies my ignorance but like said, haven't really followed new slot releases for while anymore as it's so huge amount of them, same goes for providers, not familiar all million of them anymore as don't really need to.

Hacksaw has another slot with a fixed jackpot aswell.
Think that one was 2.5 million euro

I have to say that i have missed that concept totally. Maybe when i now sometimes play (not really often), have to give these few lucky spins and get rich in seconds :)

Hacksaw are still quite new as studios go, so you don’t often stumble across them if you don’t know about them. Very easy to miss in the scheme of things.

They’re on Relax and think they’ve just gone on to MG so expect to see them more. From an operator side these fixed jackpots add a hefty fee though so I don’t expect them to become as common as the likes of Red Tiger.

Outside of Hacksaw not too many others are running with this business plan, it feels a throwback to a lottery background. MG in particular have cash pot games, such as the popular 9 Masks of Fire, but more often linked to a fixed multiplier than a large top prize.

Someone won the 2nd jackpot total of 1.53 million like today on the wowpot slots, Are you friggin kidding me as I was hammering that last night. Once again either just too early or just too late. sigh

I don't like the "collect random scatters to trigger the progressive jackpot" in Wowpot. Does that mean that on your first spin you are less likely to win it, or is it just a way to ensure people keep playing because 'I must be close by now'?

So it is either unfair or dangerous or both

Like you suspected its just eye-candy to make people feel like they are getting closer and keep playing.

Pretty much "banned" from true progressives like Mega Moolah, Dream Drop etc. Red Tiger "must drop" hourlies and the fixed jackpots are fine.

Well I can play, but would not get paid out by the game provider due to playing in unlicensed jurisdictions. It's even in the Dream Drop t&c's in the help files. One of the only drawbacks to Crypto. Don't get caught out as it's sod's law...
