Anything to help with a cold?

I've got a bit of a nasty flu/cold. Its been maybe 2-3 days.

Anyone have any 'Alternative' methods of healing? Herbs, teas, anything without too much in the way of un-natural chemicals.

I'll take all advice! I'm sick as a dog and its gotten to the point that I just want to be more comfortable.

So, my friends, who's got the cure for what ails me?!

I always do a hot rum toddy (or a couple) and go to bed. The combination of heat and alcohol seems to help somewhat, especially if you've got a bit of a fever/chills. Another thing is a long soak in a hot tub. Or you could combine the two and do a long soak in a hot rum toddy? ;)

I hope you find something that works and start feeling better.

I can recommend a cup of green leaf tea with lemon and manuka honey twice a day.

And if a sore throat put a teaspoon of manuka honey in a cup and blend with a touch of hot water and gargle as often as you can. Also garlic tablets and Olive Leaf Extract ( for well being ). Works wonders for me. Manuka is expensive though. Ranges between $25. and $80.00 (depending on grading ) for a 500 gram jar..Well worth it for me though...

Good Luck..

Ha! It's not exactly a cold for me but I have been ill for 2 months and I have lost part of my smell sense. The doc is unable to do anything so maybe I need to wait till the weather gets warmer. Ever been hospitalised in the summer of 2010 I hadnt been ill for a good year and a half so serves me right.

Usually pills work for me but not this time. Hope you get well soon buddy.

Aghhh, how many millions would someone make if they found a cure for the dreaded cold. Unfortunately there isn't much in the way of a cure. Best thing is keeping your fluids up and plenty of rest. If you don't rest, they tend to stick around for longer.

Like a couple of the posts above, I find hot water with some honey and lemon juice in it help soothe the throat and gets some fluid into you. If you have a temperature I do recommend some paracetamol as this reduces fever and helps with flu like body aches (it is a drug though and I know you were after natural remedies). If sore throat, also good to gargle warm salt water or warm water with dissolved aspirin. Eucalyptus or vapour rub is good for the chest and helps breathing easier. A hot shower can help loosen up the mucus in your lungs for coughing problems. No other solutions except riding it out unfortunately. Hope your feel better soon.

I know this sounds weird, but it really works! Put vapor rub on your feet and put socks on. Climb into bed. Off to sleep you go. Also, make sure you get plenty of fluids, especially if you are running a fever (you don't want to dehydrate). Homemade chicken noodle soup! If you smoke, extra vitamin C.

I have heard more and more good things about thus product. I recently saw a video on Dr Oz. What all do you use it for?

My mum takes a glass of boiling water with 1 spoonful of manuka honey every day, she has bowel problems, but alas I don't think it's making a difference, maybe she should just take it with cold water, I wonder, does anyone know if boiling water makes the honey less potent?

Whenever I feel a cold coming on, I start taking one Vitamin C, two Garlic pills, and two Echinacea pills each day until the cold is gone. I also try to add garlic to everything I eat.

I do the same for a few days when others around me start getting sick. I've been doing that for a while now and I rarely get colds, when I do they are usually mild and don't last long.

Garlic is real good. I do the same but with onions, usually on pizza.

I know the post was after the fact but this is my preventive measure.
I immeadiately wash my hands whenever I comeback from the market or any store and I grab the stores door handle on the bottom or top with 2 fingers and I always use a coin to press ATM/debit buttons and I hardly get sick.

The 24 gas station up the street has a variety store and its quite small, in the winter months its a nesting ground for the bug but I've managed to not get sick doing it this way.

Of course now that I've said this, I'll be sick as a dog tomorrow. :p

Garlic because it contains allicin & it help prevent colds & Flu

Yup! I used to do that with my kids when they were little. Rub a bit of vicks (or vapour rub) on their feet, and some on their chest (mixed with vaseline when they were smaller) Straight vicks when they were older. I'd swear by it for colds.

Couple of tablespoons of vicks (or vapour rub) in a bowl of boiling hot water. Put your head over it, towel over your head and inhale. Clears the nose and chest. Good stuff!:thumbsup:

Oh and myself being a smoker, methol ciggarettes when Im down with a cold:p

PS: They sell Vicks in our country. I have seen vapour rub around though, Im pretty sure, its the same or a very similar product. I would totally swear by vicks for colds:thumbsup:

Thanks!

Still sick- as it turns out I picked up a case of acute Bronchitus. Wozah!

However, I will certainly be taking some of those awesome advice for general health!

I think I'll be getting a massage soon, as well. Always been a big advocate of massage for health! I know I always feel better! :D

Lots of fluids has been my thing, it seems to work.

Awesome advice though, guys! Thanks again!

I had a terrible sinus cold awhile back, my poor nose was so red and sore it was actually keeping me from sleeping. I had a tube of Blistex sitting here so I thought I'd give it a shot, squeezed some onto my finger and smeared it on and it helped right away - and the next day my nose didn't hurt at all.

I find this medication will cure anything ;).................................
