The Controversial Thread

Okay, I am by my own admission a bit “old school” and I have seen a lot of changes in my time with regards as to what people think is right or wrong and subsequently acceptable or not acceptable.

I am creating this thread to give people the opportunity to give their views on things that have either changed or are likely to be changed and whether you agree or disagree and is it always for the better?

The subjects can literally be about anything but discretion is key. I don’t want it to become a thread full of personal attacks, more about debates that have strong arguments for and against and which side of the fence you are on.

I have quite a few for discussion but I will start with this one.

Banning heading in football.

For sometime now we have seen this topic at the fore of discussions around sport and the way the world is nowadays there is a likelihood that some measures to reduce heading or do away with it completely could be introduced. This is of course in conjuthe growing concern that it can lead to dementia.

I can see both sides, don’t get me wrong but if I was on a panel and could cast a vote, I would vote to keep heading in football.

Why? Well it’s got nothing to do with spoiling a tradition or anything of that nature. More to do with occupational hazard.

Pretty much every job comes with some form of occupational hazard, whether it be stress from jobs like Banking or Teaching to long term health problems from working with chemicals to arthritis from working in severe weather conditions and so on.

My point being that because football is a “high profile” occupation, more people are aware of any controversy surrounding it. There are just as many illnesses associated with other occupations that people will be oblivious to.

Occupation is generally a personal choice nowadays, thankfully. Back in the 50’s and 60’s, this was less so. Yes it’s sad that some of these footballing heroes of yesteryear are dying from something that has been linked with their profession but how many others are dying from theirs such as miners and “black lung”?

Because that is seen as a job that is not high profile it’s an accepted hazard and consequently brushed under the carpet but it doesn’t mean that should be the case.

The other problem is, where does this all stop? Surely if there is a case for heading to be banned then Boxing should be banned tomorrow.

As I have said, it’s sad that these people are dying but if all this had been known at the time, I don’t think many would have chosen a different occupation instead.

I still think that stands today, even with the information we now have. Give a kid the option of playing football (with heading) for a living and having a lifestyle most can only dream of but with a chance you could die at 70 or stacking shelves at the supermarket for 50 years and struggle to survive but POSSIBLY live to be 80, which would you choose?

N.B. This post is not intended to offend anyone who has been personally affected by this subject. It is merely an alternative way of looking at it.

I am in the UK so can only speak for UK television, but it seems nearly every advert has to feature a mixed race couple or family these days.
Now Britain is a multicultural society and by and large I have no problem with that whatsoever, and I appreciate that all cultures should be regonised, but has the pendalum swung to much to cater for the minority? After all the majority of citizens are still Caucasian but it seems that adverts featuring an all white family are almost a thing of the past.

Why is there skin colour an issue for you, Why does it matter if there are more BAME people in adverts, Your clearly have a deeper issue with racist to even bring this up. "I have no problem with that whatsoever, and I appreciate that all cultures should be recognised" " but has the pendulum swung to much to cater for the minority"

Oh sorry you tell us what is the right number of BAME people you would like to see on TV, We are all humans that's where it starts and ends in life,

Next you be saying Bame people shouldnt be on tv before 9PM

He never said skin colour was an issue.

He had a totally legit point. If like you say it does not matter what culture people are then why go out of the way to make sure adverts TV programmes etc. feature more.

The TV stations etc. were told to feature more Ethnic Minorities. More same couple relationships , more handicapped people.

So now you are seeing people getting chose just because they are BAME. That is discriminatory in itself.

Companies are being told they must employ more gay and BAME workers. So now some companies are employing people just because they are from a minority group even when they are not the best qualified. Again it is discrimatory.

Also why should i keep seeing adverts for BLM all the time. Yes they matter but no more than a white life.

Sorry but he was right. The country has gone way to PC. Got to the stage where too many are pandering and changing everything to suit the minority.

Andddddd there it is, the 'racist' word, didn't take long... Trouble is, that word is banded around so much these days it's lost all its impact.
I assure you, I am not racist, I'm sure you won't believe me but I can live with that.
The fact is, BAME people are being patronised on a massive scale which is counter productive to them, you choose not to see this, that's your opinion to which you're entitled of course as I am to mine.

Who said BLM matter more than white life's once again another white male not wanting to understanding.
Sorry its no longer 1980s where BAME and LGBTQI people was never shown on TV even thou we existed
Times are changing people regardless of there skin or sexuality are getting the same chances as anyone else.

And why is that an issue?

The ONLY people who has an issue with more BAME on our screens and LGBTQI people are racist and homophobics,
No other person would even mention it or bring it up as it does not effect them like it does you

Sorry when have i ever said i had a black friend. The colour , religion or sexual orientation of my friends i would see no need to ever discuss.

And you are going to call me a racist because i disagree with your point.

Just because someone does not agree with the constant pandering to certain groups does not make them either racist or homophobic.

In fact i am pretty pissed of that you seem to be able to just call anyone with a different view racist or homophobic. Shows how narrow minded you actually are.

And yeah everyone should be treated equal. Imagine the outrage tho if there was to be a Straight Pride march tomorrow to celebrate being straight, And if TV kept flashing up White Lives Matters.

I only thought the same the other night, whilst watching adverts. It’s not that BAME shouldn’t feature in them @ESCJAMIE, of course they should but then as @9HOURSAWAY says, you have to look at the other side of the coin and one could argue that a lack of white people featuring could be construed as being prejudice against them.

It’s impossible to please all the people, all of the time but I do think there has been an over exerted effort to promote and influence mixed cultural relationships, that’s just my opinion.

That’s another problem nowadays, you can’t say boo to a goose without someone twisting your words and claiming it’s racism. I was kind of hoping this thread might avoid the subject but should have known better.

If we are going discuss people’s opinions like adults we need to ensure we do so in the proper manner and not resort to shouting and yelling when we don’t agree with a particular statement. Otherwise you know what will happen to the thread.

And that is EXACTLY what Gay pride is about fighting for equality all over the world for LGBTQIA+ PEOPLE
A straight person is not killed or have laws against them for being STRAIGHT, So lets not fucking go down that alley Paul.

Only Narrow minded people are them who think there is to many blacks and Asians on TV. But do not understand what they have said is indeed offensive.

You are not worth the time arguing with.

And you might find this hard to believe. This is not because you are Gay. It is because you are a complete clown.

Now since you have already called me racist for no reason you can go ahead call me Homophobic .

So you can swear all you want if you think that makes you look big. To me it only shows you as coming across as a Total Drama Queen like always.

Anyway like i said you are not worth it. Report me all you wish. After all you are the idiot that called me Racist and Homophobic for no reason. And as you know not a bloody thing about me that really pisses me off.

I think that there is a lot of over sensitivity emanating from both minorities, the LGBTQI communities as well as those who are a defender of their causes. It has been the case for many years.
Many years ago I was working as a self employed Chef and I was booked for a few weeks at Gatwick Airport cooking for Pilots and flight crew. In the presence of a Moroccan waitress I wrote down an order from a Trolly Dolly and when she was presented with her order she insisted that what she was given was not what she ordered. Both the waitress and I insisted that it was what she had ordered and I produced the docket as proof. This lady went bat shit and stormed off despite being offered her order being made again.
The next day I was called and told not to come into work as I was under investigation because I had been accused of racism. The Moroccan Waitress insisted that I had not been racist in any way to this lady and I offered to bring my then wife and my two kids ( who are clearly black) in to bolster my case.
The investigation was quickly dropped but I was left out of pocket because I refused to go back.
Emotion can often rule over the head when it comes to some very sensitive issues

See you are a major part of the problem.

It has sweet FA to do with equality, all BAME, LGBTQIA want special treatment and what's worse is you believe you are entitled to it.

We are sick of having it all rammed down our throats constantly.

If we dare to speak out about it, YOU have proved how you all react, RACIST, HOMOPHOBIC blah, it's pathetic.

The fact your gay has no bearing to me, it's the fact you use it on this forum as a trump card to start bleating about how repressed you are, when in fact in the UK you get more doors opened for you than any non BAME, LGBTQIA person.

If a black man called me a white bastard, nothing would happen, but if i called someone a black bastard, i would likely be arrested.

How does that equal equality?.
