Antivir is a free software that I have used for years without having any trouble.

Scanning test results are mostly as good as every payed program.

click on "download your free antivir" and then choose the "Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus " edition.

Me too.
I have Norton on my PC, but antivir on my laptop (which I use online daily) and I've never had any problems at all.
(Touch wood).
The only annoying thing is the daily pop-up trying to get you to buy one of their more advanced products - but since it's free, what do you expect?
Definitely recommend it.

AVG will only be free untill the end of may.
Than you will have to buy the new, more advanced, version of it.

AVG is actually continuing to offer the new version for free. They just warn you that your version is discontinued periodically and you have to go to free.grisoft.com to get the new free version.

They make it look like you'll have to pay to continue getting service, but it's just a ploy to get free customers to start paying.

It's been this way for a few years. They're still not charging. It's an annoyance, but hey, it's free.

thnk you for the overwhelming show of force, it never ceases to amaze me how the peeps on this site are so willing to help each other out if they can, one of the reasons i miss being able to be here everyday like i used to be but someones gotta pay the bills,

I love AVG...

I also love PC Tools Firewall Plus.

I was just upgrading (xp service pack3), a few minutes ago from windows and the PC tools Firewall Plus stopped a very very bad trojan from being installed along with the windows update.

I use ZoneAlarm for my firewall and Avast for antivirus - I highly recommend them both. I uninstalled ZoneAlarm's mail checker thing because it's too slow, other than that I love them both!

The only thing I know for sure is....I wish Id never bought a new comp with Vista.....XP was much much better.
I know I can change back to....stilll I paid for it and is,IMO, worthless.
My son told me to wait 1 more year or to add 2 more GB memory.....He could have told me a little earlyer....he didnt tho:oops::oops::oops:

No stay clear away from Zone alarm, to many patches and potential leaks im sorry to say.
A big eater of ram aswell, everytime you click on a site or download a program or basically anything- you need to accept the changes via zonealarm and it can vecome annoying as hell. And overall they dont pick up as much as AVG or Avast.
AVG and or AVAst and a anti spam progrma such as spy sweeper (very good) or spy bot search & destory. thats all you need mate there good progrma with regular updates and clearsd most viruses and spam.

ive been reading that there seems to be alot of bugs in the (xp service pack 3), its advised to wait about 6 months before installing it to allow them to iron out the bugs,

speaking of windows updates, and <jack>ing the thread somewhat, what about LINUX?

i've often heard linux machines are tougher to crack and hijacks/trojans are often directed at windows targets, ignoring linux users. any truth to this? what protective software should be used for linux? should those concerned with viruses/traces be running a non-windows os?

and can casinos run under linux? does it depend at all on the linux distro? i been thinking of giving linux a whirl since i got the eeepc from asus, the ultramobile notebook which runs xandros linux. it's all fine to use that for mobile computing, works just as easy as windows for surfing and word-processing, but i wonder does linux do everything (and how smoothly) when it comes to pc games and specialized apps like casinos?

and to <rerail>, i use avg anti-virus and -spyware, comodo firewall defence+, comodo boclean, ccleaner, advanced windowscare, and then i have a couple other anti-spyware and cleaning tools i use to cross-check my results, a second opinion if you will. you should only run one anti-virus though, they hog resources anyway, one is almost too much. i wouldn't ride the net "raw" though, especially if i was going to some less than tasteful sites.

Feel that way myself, but I sold my old computer and therefore transferred my OS and no longer have the right to revert to XP. But as Vista has been around for a little longer, it seems that there is more support for it in other programs.

Red Hat is a beautiful thing!

Linux is good in some ways, especially security. On the other hand, if you have to download the software for the casino, it's almost guaranteed not to work. Some of the no-download versions will work, but that really limits your games at some of the casinos. I think if you're a serious player, it's not practical to move to linux. Linux is more for programmers (and hackers).

No, Linux is for people who want to use a PC without paying Bill Gates for the privilege. There are governments, companies, universities who manage to live without Windows. In Germany, some 40% of university students now use Linux. Installing a free Linux system may require some skills, but I managed just fine about 4 years ago, but a commercial Linux OS should work straight out of the box.

Btw, BMW cars also run on Linux.

linux is fun. makes me feel like a rebelling hacker/programmer. but really, it's amusing to go into a terminal and bash out commands to do stuff, like the old days (young folks are so spoiled these days...command line, wha? analogue clock, wha?). to not be a slave to windows is quite liberating, as is the freedom to manipulate your system to do exactly what you want it to without a lot of crap you don't require.

that's what i look at linux ideally as. in practice, however, i'm encountering some obstacles and feeling apprehension. i'm scared i'm going to break my system bashing around in it, and i find some tasks that were "two-clicks" easy in windows to be cumbersome and frustrating in xandros linux. overall i feel positively, and i think if i spend a couple months playing in linux that i will feel like a cool pro with a pimped out system.

do you guys know the eeepc? it's mad cool-looking because of its compact size. it's like the smart car of laptops. literally two of them side by side would fit in the same footprint as my 15.4" lappy. so far i have mostly cosmetic mods on it; penguin-face "start" button and igloo icon for "my computer" are my favourites. because linux is teh pwnxx0rrz and i am 1337 hackxn1zzl3 !

i'm going to start a new thread i think... or a blog or a group...

Installing Windows XP or Vista (and getting it to run right) ain't so easy if your running custom hardware or apps. Windows tries it's best to make using non-windows products as difficult as possible.

I detest and despise everything about Windows... A bunch of arrogant butt faces that sell crappy software.
