MADRID (AP) - A 10-year-old girl has given birth in southern Spain and authorities are evaluating whether to let her and her family retain custody of the baby, an official said Tuesday.

The baby was born last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera, said Micaela Navarro, the Andalusia region's social affairs minister.

Navarro told reporters the father of the baby is also a minor, and both the mother and the baby were in good health. Her department declined to give details, including the sex of the baby, but said authorities do not consider this a case of rape and that no criminal investigation is under way.

Under Spanish law, having consensual sex with someone under age 13 is classified as child abuse, an official with the Spanish Justice Ministry in Madrid said. But this particular case is complicated by the fact that the father of the baby is also a minor and it is not clear if he could be charged, the official said.

Spanish newspapers said the mother is of Romanian origin.

The daily Diario de Jerez reported the girl was already pregnant when she arrived in Spain, but did not say when she came to this country. It is not clear if the father is in Spain.

Medical experts warn that because young girls are still growing, they are at higher risk during pregnancy. Studies have shown that teenage girls are more likely to give birth to premature babies and their infants have a higher chance of dying by age one.

What a mess that is. It is a sad state of affairs when children are having children. In the last 30 or more years it has become too prevalent an issue. The biggest problem is that the babies and children end up suffering from the thoughtless behavior of their parents.

Actually I don't think it's become more prevalent, I think we've just become more disgusted by it. "Women" have been taken as wives at a very young age all through history and it's unlikely sex and childbirth was held off for any amount of time.

Ancient Egyptians were known to take very young "wives" (not that they married as we do.)

Most medieval women were married before the age of 19.

Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin.

I've dated women much younger than me but I haven't dated a teenager since I was a teenager and now that I'm in my 40s I think all girls should just wear chastity belts until they're 20.

You find any teenage girls who can't find anything better to do with their time than have sex you send them over here. When their homework is done I have a whole sink full of dishes and a laundry basket with their names on it. (Actually I don't care who you send over as long as they do my dishes.)

my brothers stepdaughter just gave brith and she just turned 15.

its sad because it is the baby that suffers the most.

its hard enough to rise a baby when your a grown-up let alone a baby riseing a baby.

and its getting wrose and wrose i look around and there r kids under the age of 16 all walking around peg everywhere and its uselly the grandparents who end up riseing the baby.

i think the youngest i,ve read about was 9 at the time she gave brith.

Girls these days are developing much much faster. My daughters cousin was 8 when she got her period. So it is very possible to get pregnant at that age. My 8 year old will be wearing a bra pretty soon. It's very strange how young girls are developing so fast.

My 8 year old plays in her friends basement (a boy) alone, his parents are upstairs. When they come here, they just play in the other room. As parents, at least me...I would never think they were "fooling around" at that age, or even at the age of 10...it just doesn't cross my mind, but it certainly will now.

Don't you watch tv? I cannot believe what they show these days, even on kids shows. Sometimes I get embarrased watching certain commercials with my daughter.

That is a shame, and I couldn't imagine one of my daughters getting pregnant until they are grown enough to take care of the baby.

I am sitting here flipping through the channels, and I found a show called "16 and Pregnant" and it's supposed to be a show other teens how hard it is to have a baby young, I think it's doing the opposite.

Sad, sad stuff.

I'm with you on that one, JP. I have been embarrassed watching a kid's show with my grand kids. It certainly is not like when my kids were little and watched Sesame Street or Mister Rogers.

And then there is the current happening where teen aged girls are making pacts to get pregnant,because they think having a baby is neat and being a mom is cool?

When my daughter was a young teen, she babysat regularly for a single mom with a 5 year old and a toddler while she worked a bar shift until late at night. Took a lot of the romance out of having a baby.

@skiny, yeah back in the olden days people were getting married young - but lifespans weren't as long back then either - if you survived til 40 that was a ripe old age. Even 20 years ago it was rare for people to live til 80....now there are people all over the world over 100 years old. Imagine the kind of changes you'll see if you live for 100 years.

Anyhow back OT, you know how all these people are doing all sorts of stuff to try to get on tv -get on a reality show and you're an intant celebrity. IMO those reality shows about teenaged moms are a big mistake - any 14 year old girl who's obsessed with being a celebrity can be one, all she has to do is get knocked up!

I have a granddaughter, 10 soon to be 11, and a grandson, 12 soon to be 13. Both of them are very mature for the age. However, it was around 2 years ago that their parents had to give them the 'talk' not because they were 'interested' but because so many of their friends were.

I firmly believe that if more parents were open with their kids about sex and kept a more watchful eye on them, there wouldn't be so much teen pregnancy.

I think each girl and boy needs to have a parenting class with the dolls that are like real babies. My daughter decided real quick that she didn't want kids after she had to babysit her little brother. Course she changed her mind but she was grown and had been married a while before Trav came along. LOL!

But all this being said, this young girl is from a different society than we are use to. What we find repulsive may be totally accepted in the society she lives in.

The thing I'm happy about is I have a 20 year old who was 12 when I had my 8 year old...sooooo...she has seen what it takes to take care of a baby, I am almost possitive she won't be having a baby anytime soon...lol..I joke around with her about using condoms and she says "don't worry, I DO NOT WANT A BABY!!!"

Lets think about our modern day.. TV hmmm What reality show is on and how many kids see these and think that's life Thanks again Snooky.. Lets open our computer hmmmm you tube great videos lets teach our young to publicize there indiscretions.... hmmmm pop up just came up oh and lets not forget about that spam you'll get if you miss type sperm whale when doing report. Ok lets go to face book great pics but hey to my niece Megan I didn't really need to see you doing the shot of whiskey in that bar even tho I know you 18 and drinking age is 21.. But great to share and give other kids your age the idea. Why don't we tweet it then it can be everywhere... P.s. The new things kids are doing is when there is a fight they tweet and text police are now dealing with mobs of kids in a park instead of 4 or 5 ... Great idea getting the phone we did it for safety makes you wonder ... My point is what chance do our children have when they open any source of media and they are bombarded with everything. Things we knew to be wrong are now reality tv shows Cool ain't it. things we we so afraid to talk about hey there videos on you tube ... the best a parent can do is sit and say this is whats out there you can be a Snooky or you can be a hero you need to choose because one day I wont be here for you to call I wont be holding your hand watching you cross that street and I cant control who and what your friends will email or text you -- Your decision lets hope you decide right.

Drugs pregnancy the choking game the list can go on and on makes you want to lock your door turn off your power or better yet live in a cave but since you can't let's just hope we can educate our children enough that they do make the right decision when the time comes.
