World Cup 2026 World Cup - Greatest Goals Ever

World Cup 2026
Hi again peeps, before the 2026 World Cup starts giving us new goals to argue about, I thought it could be nice to remember some of the greatest goals ever scored in World Cup history.
Of course, this kind of list is always very personal. It depends where you are from, how old you are, which team broke your heart, and probably how many times you have watched the same goal on YouTube again and again.

For me, a few goals always come to mind:
  • Pelé vs Sweden, 1958:17 years old, World Cup final, flicks the ball over the defender and finishes it like it was nothing. Crazy.
  • Maradona vs England, 1986: not the handball one, obviously… the other one. I know some English members may still not enjoy this one too much:D:p.
  • Bergkamp vs Argentina, 1998: the control, the touch, the finish. Just pure class.
  • Maxi Rodríguez vs Mexico, 2006: one of those goals where you know straight away it is something special.
  • Andrés Iniesta vs Netherlands, 2010 : probably not the most spectacular goal in terms of technique, but for me as a Spaniard this one means everything. Extra time, World Cup final, and the goal that gave Spain our first World Cup (INIESTA DE MI VIDA!!! :P). I still get goosebumps when I see it.
  • Van Persie vs Spain, 2014: this one hurts 😢😢, no point pretending otherwise. But yes, it was a fantastic goal. Painful, but fantastic.

  • James Rodríguez vs Uruguay, 2014: chest, turn, volley. Beautiful goal.

I’m sure I’m missing many, and probably some of you will come here and tell me my list is completly wrong. Fair enough.

So, what is the greatest World Cup goal ever for you?

Watched them all, and the only one I rewatched a few times was Bergkamp's so I'll vote for that one. DeBoer's nonchalant, inch-perfect pass, Dennis' harmony, elegance, control, and deadly finishing... It's simply a marvel to behold. (And mind you, these types of goals were pretty much weekly occurances from the non-flying Dutchman). Also, both the high stakes of the game, and the commentary awards extra points (as if they were needed).

Maradona's goal.. I don't know. Perhaps it's lost some value by being shown to death over the years. Or perhaps it just wasn't that great to begin with. I mean, who is he actually dribbling here? Steve Hodge? Peter Reid? Terry Butcher? Not exactly formidable opponents...

Iniestas goal? This is just bias. It's like I would nominate Kjetil Rekdal's spot kick winner against Brazil in '98. Kjetil who? Exactly 😁
