Oh to play a defence with a combined age of 170 every week :D

I know you can only play who's put in front of you, and in that respect England already qualified the moment the draw was announced. You could have Defoe, Crouch or Shearer out there and the result would not be in doubt.

A good start indeed, but I won't be cracking out the pom-poms just yet, not until England have been tested properly AND come out the other side

IF they get tonight's version of Colombia (ie the 11-man version) in the last 16, I am not liking England's chances of coming out the other side at all.

Poland has been quite disappointing. Colombia has a great attacking line, but I remain sceptik about their keeper and the defensive line.

aside the big favourites (Brasil Germany Spain), I would bet something on Uruguay (4,333) and Russia (7,5) reaching semifinals.
Some teams start well and fizzle out, I'd put Russia in that category, personally.

Same thing for England, Mexico etc, Portugal too

Although I expect France to do quite well.

I expect even Argentina/ Germany and other similar pedestrian starters to move up a gear soon

The Machine Gun Midget started, and was just as fucking shit as in the first game. They beat Panama with effectively 10 players. A free shot against Belgium next game as we'll be playing Japan, Colombia or Senegal whatever happens, none of which should beat England, poor as they are when they play better sides. So the predictable exit should come in the Quarter Final this time. I have watched 6 England WC QF's in my lifetime of which they managed to lose 5. I expect no different here.

Reality check for Russia. They will not beat Spain or Portugal in the last 16.

Uruguay meanwhile, maintain their 100% record and have still yet to concede a goal. Croatia is the only other team yet to concede a goal.
And with Saudi Arabia scoring today, that means only Morocco, Peru and Costa Rica have yet to score a goal.

Uruguay has a great shot to make the semi-finals.

Edit: Morocco just scored. Russia 2018 delivers yet another surprise.

Wouldn't mind Uruguay even winning it to be honest. It'll be fitting as they're the first-ever winners back in 1930 :D

Just not England. Please.

Mrs P is running her works sweepstake on it - she controls the points allocated Pivot Table excel spreadsheet. First by 20 points with 8/9 correct scores (and 500 quid up in the Sportsbook section of my casino as i bet according to the predictions). The work aren't happy as they're saying cos she collates it all that 'it's fixed'

I took great glee in telling her to tell them - 'it's not fixed, in our world we say it's rigged'

And there was the chance to do it, out of nowhere.
I actually thought they'd snatched it at the death  Hoh boy

That ref was a disgrace, mind.

Thought Iran held their own very well in the three games, 1-0, 0-1 & 1-1, with the group of death (for them) :D

Just glad they didn't do a 'Panama'

Few more goals would be great :D because i get 10FS for every Goal Iran scores on guts

Guts aren't stupid haha

Picking Iran to score a lot of goals

There's more chance of the Pope walking into a mosque saying "I'd like to convert" :p

There is a Wheel , you can spin everyday so you have a lot of teams and when you get it few times the FS are X with it

But wasnt lucky enough to get England on that wheel till now

To be fair, the VAR crew and both sets of players gave the ref the chance(s) to be a disgrace.

True. Both penalties shouldn't have- and weren't- given initially. Thanks to the shameful behaviour of both sets of players and staff it descended into a circus.

VAR is seemingly a tool to employ against weak officiating. Not a fan of it

darn was hoping Iran would snatch it there in the end :)
Got nothing against Portugal and i think Ronaldo is one helluva player just had enough of him thats all :)
espeasally after the Euro where he acted like a cry baby cause they couldnt beat mighty Iceland :D

+1 he is is a awesome football Player but anything else sucks @ him

That game was a total snoozefest. If France and Denmark are going to serve up crap like that, then I hope they get ruthlessly disposed of in the last 16.
Preferably by Croatia and Argentina with a re-invigorated Messi who has gone into a full on defiant "fuck it....I'm allin" mode.

I always thought if Argentina get a Phoenix-like reprieve and 'bye' against Nigeria they'll seize their chance. I wouldn't fancy them in the knockouts, now or ever.

Much better to get an early wake-up call than think you're world- beaters (England) and delude yourselves, only to lose in the obligatory Quarter Finals phase...

Whoever draws Denmark will be over the moon :D

I'm just wondering who PM'ed robby to advise him to edit his spelling of "Niggeria" :p
Me, actually

Some translation issues really need addressing rather sharpish :p

Actually that's where the word came from back in the 1600's. The tribes in the Niger Delta area were so black they had a bluish tinge to their skin. You may have seen them around yourself if you live in London. So the expression came to be 'as black as a Niger' (spread by traders, slavers and explorers returning to Britain) to describe something or somebody very dark. Being at this time very few people could read or write it got corrupted by verbal use (like many old words have been especially those with a 'soft G' like Niger.)

So rather than offensive, its roots were actually in the name of this region in East Africa.

Then again, at that time 'gay' also meant happy and a faggot was a wooden stake..

That description's made me come over a little queer

Well at least you didn't come over a wooden stake or a erm...."savoury duck".

Back to the football, if we may :p

So it's France v Argentina and Uruguay v Portugal in the first quarter of the draw (both games to be played on Saturday).

And Spain v Russia and Croatia v Denmark in the third quarter of the draw (both games to be played on Sunday).

Based on what I have seen so far, I have to make Uruguay and Croatia my picks for reaching the semi finals.

Seems almost all teams have had a game to forget thus far, in Argentina's case, two and a half :eek2:

Croatia look like the dark horses of the tournament, yet I can't picture them lifting the trophy in my mind's eye.

Spain have been underwhelming, so I wouldn't see the Russia game as a dead cert.

It's a shame to see the likes of France & Argentina square off so early on, same as Uruguay Portugal.

Denmark may as well field their reserves, that may be rash but nothing will save their bacon. On a side note, used to always buy Pione Sisto in FM 2015 & 16 for a snip, he'd be a wonderkid without fail. I feel that there's some emotional investment on my part, and it's surreal to see him in the flesh.

I'm more tempted to opt for Argentina vs Portugal, personally, when all's said and done.

As for ze Germans, I fear Brazil may be next. That is, if they can overcome the might of S.Korea :eek2:

I'll be donning my Serbia hat tomorrow :cheerleader:

The top half of the draw could be

Uruguay vs Portugal
France vs Argentina
Brazil vs Germany
England/Belgium vs Colombia

That's tasty but the bottom side could be average.

Spain Vs Russia
Croatia vs Denmark
Mexico vs Switzerland
Japan vs Belgium/England

Belgium vs England it's probably better for the team that loses

I'll be rooting for Japan, should this scenario play out. You can bet Japan will at least play with a bit of passion and national pride :D

Coupled with the make up of the England squad....I can't think of a single likeable or relatable character in there. I mean c'mon, who doesn't want to smack Dele Alli in the face? Be honest now

Did someone mention lightweight prima donnas.

I felt a bit sorry for Nigeria last night. Not only because I tipped them to do well before this tourny began, but I thought that they deserved to go though. Such a young squad has so much room to improve and I bet that we will see a lot more of their players in the next few years signing for the big guns and they will be back with a bang in 4 years time
