Feedback What has happened to the Thanks button?

As far as I can determine, neither the Thanks/Like button indicate what part of a post is being thanked/liked. They are fairly ambiguous functions, with numerous uses - as a courtesy gesture, a return of thanks, or even....gasp...an actual thanks regarding the contents of a post. Actually, let me restate that - ambiguous but also innocuous.

The Thumbs Up button would in all likelihood be very similar in function.

However, there is no such ambiguity with a Thumbs Down button - your post has been found lacking or even offensive. But why? Too many Thumbs Downs, without further comments indicating the reasons, could discourage people from posting as they could feel their views are worthless, and they have nothing useful to contribute. But even more worrying is that its use is open to serious abuse - basically a spiteful revenge mechanism.

At the moment, simply having a Thanks/Like button keeps discussions (mostly) in check and prevents them degenerating into a rancorous argument. If you violently disagree with a post/poster, then you have the option to ignore both. A Thumbs Down button could possibly bring out the worst in people.

There are bad apples in every forum, no matter how much we wish there were not, who exist simply to antagonise other people.

Just my 2 cents worth.

What was wrong with the original thank and like button..

Unfortunately, the plugin for the old "thanks" button has't been updated for about ten years, and the coder who originally developed this does not support this function any longer. As the Internet grows we need to keep up with it. If not, you make come here someday and everything is broken. This is why we need to keep current with software upgrades, and that if there are any additional applications or plugins that we use - they need to be current and fully supported.

The new Thanks/Likes function is a bit of a bull to wrestle since we are integrating years of old data into the new. The reason why there are "thanks" and likes" and not just "thanks" is when you "thank" someone, it increases their rep score by 5 points. This affects their user group level, and can be quite helpful for them. We have some programs in the background that have not been fully implemented that will flush this out a bit so that we can give more credence to these thanks like we do with the Meister Minions.

There are some forums where the "thanks" are turned off, but the "likes" are turned on. This is mostly in the non-gambling forums.

Does this mean the months of non-totalled thanks and no increase in rep points etc. will get back-added to your total?

Actually, it's been done. It's working now.

Mine ain't - it's been static since about June and still is.:)

Update: Actually it's different when I click the arrow next to 'like' and reveal the stats, although I have missed a chunk somewhere, should have been higher than the total there. The issue is that the visible thanks/stats are static and don't reflect the real stats behind the down arrow. That's why I didn't realize they were working. I'm not sure the rep power/rep points are working either? If the rest of the stats not hidden are not dynamic then it follows they're frozen too?

I liked just being able to 'thank', and nothing else bar the odd 'helpful' option.

I also believe it to be common courtesy to reciprocate if someone has thanked your post, even if just as a gesture and acknowledgement. So no actual need for the 'like' button (have I mentioned this already?!!) :p

Some people don't bother thanking at all, and I won't mention any names

When you get that rare "thanks" from those who "never thank", it is worth 100 "thanks" from those that "always thank":D

Ah, I know what it is. It's totaling everything correctly within that drop down section. The two stats underneath that:
Thanks xxx
Thanked xxx Times in xxx Post

is from the old plug in and is no longer active. I'll need to remove that from the postbit template.

Please be assured that your thanks were imported and are being properly tallied up within that drop down section.
