Probably people used to open a browser and go to a site, close the site, go to another or go offline. These days, there's often a string of tabs across the top of the screen.
Out of curiousity, how many tabs do you pretty much always have open if online (not to be confused with your bookmarks bar)?
For me, it's CM, my email, and facebook are always open..and often zergnet and a spare for googling/random surfing. And then, because I have my laptop tucked away in the cabinet and use the 44" tv as my monitor and surf wirelessly from my armchair and use for downloads as well, the downloads folder is gen open in the background for online snags and I have aother tab for torrents.
How about you? Are you online then off..or like me, a series of tabs, switching from site to site?
