This one isn't linked to the mega moolah jackpot like the other batman slot?
Well that is a plus, progressives seem to hate me :)

The slot looks good in my opinion. The symbol scramble feature looks a bit tame but have to play and see. It has little potential :D

Cool looking slot

Bit strange that only one casino has published this trailer considering it is one of Microgaming's biggest slots this year, but good for Tropezia hehe!

I’d be excited but with experience I usually find all the glitz and glamour, special effects and mega bass biased sounds tend to result in a feature that pays all of 12 pence, it’s cinematic and almost dramatic but never tends to have a drastic effect on the old bankroll lol

If they stick to what they did with LOTR, they will yank the current Batman slot when this new one is released. There is no guarantee either that it won't end up being yet another Mega Moolah linked progressive. Although we now know what drove MGS to pull the second LOTR, it doesn't explain why they had to pull the first to "make room" for the second given that they normally just add the new games into an ever expanding portfolio.

If, as one theory suggested, it was too expensive to maintain two licenses for the LOTR franchise, surely it will be the same for the Batman one.

This slot certainly looks interesting and looks to be very high variance judging from the paytable and free spin feature. I'm already salivating at the possible big wins from the 4x multiplier with 33 spins (but I'll be probably be disappointed as usual.) Wasn't really a fan of the Dark Knight progressive slots as I just couldn't seem to win a damn thing on it and the free spins were frustrating to say the least. This one looks to be similar to the current popular 243 way slots albeit more interesting (Batman fan) so I'll definitely keep an eye out for this one.

I don't know about that.

From what we know, TDKR appears much lower variance than TDK. The stacked wilds on all reels along with a potential x5 multiplier are what made TDK such a high variance beast. Look at the maximum pay for both slots...

It might be high variance, but certainly lower than TDK.

The press release for LOTR talked of a total of THREE games, one for each of the films, released in stages. When it came to the second game, they yanked the first.

MICROGAMING ANNOUNCES LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH WARNER BROS. DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION FOR THE LORD OF THE RINGS MOVIE TRILOGY

ISLE OF MAN – Microgaming (www.microgaming.com), the world’s largest provider of online gaming software, has announced that it has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, to create a series of cutting-edge, graphic rich video slots, based on the popular The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, for Internet gaming to adults in countries where online gaming is permitted. The agreement gives Microgaming permission to develop online video slot games using animation material, themes and characters from the motion pictures The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

This deal illustrates Microgaming’s commitment to license the right brands, at the right time. It is a strategic and timely decision to secure exclusive, online video slot game rights to a trilogy that generated $3billion in worldwide box office receipts and was nominated for a total of 30 Academy Awards®; of which they won 17, including Best Picture.

Roger Raatgever, CEO of Microgaming said, "We’re excited about creating state-of-the-art video slots from the best movie trilogy of the decade. We look forward to bringing The Lord of the Rings into the online gaming sphere, where our expertise in game quality and speed to market will ensure its success. The Lord of the Rings has a huge entrenched fan base with over 97% awareness of the film franchise, as well as phenomenal and unprecedented home video success.”

The announcement comes hot on the heels of the launch of Microgaming's latest flagship branded video slot, Hellboy, which promises to be hugely successful amongst the player community.

MICROGAMING SET TO LAUNCH THE LORD OF THE RINGS™: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING ONLINE VIDEO SLOT GAME

First Title to Utilize Proprietary Cinematic Spins™ Technology Allowing Players to Experience the Film with Every Spin

ISLE OF MAN – Microgaming (www.microgaming.com) today announced the imminent launch of a new flagship game, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Online Video Slot Game. This slot game is the first to utilise Microgaming’s new Cinematic Spins™ technology, allowing gamers to see clips from the films with every spin.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a new online slot game that is part of a multi-year licensing agreement Microgaming signed with Warner Bros. Digital Distribution in 2009. The company is developing a series of cutting-edge, graphic rich video slots based on this popular movie trilogy and will use animation material, themes, and characters, from the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings™ motion pictures that include The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. These online slot games will be available to adults only in countries where online gaming is permitted.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is the first online video slot to use Microgaming’s Cinematic Spins™ state-of-the-art gaming technology. This allows movie clips to act as moving backgrounds behind the reels during spins providing players an unprecedented level of excitement and immersion. Win sequences and expanding wilds also use cinematic clips, instead of traditional animated graphics. The slots feature famous scenes from the film including Ringwraiths during the attack at Weathertop, Balrog in the Mines of Moria, and Uruk-hai in the woods of Middle-earth. Players will also enjoy seeing characters from the films that include Frodo, Aragorn, Saruman and the deadly Black Riders.

Roger Raatgever, CEO Microgaming comments: “Microgaming has always been ahead of the curve with innovative offerings, but this game really does push the boundaries of what an online slot can do. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring looks and feels like an extension of the big screen film experience and we’re confident that our operators will see a great deal of demand from their players, when the game is released. This is an important deal for Microgaming and highlights our commitment to partner with the right brands, at the right time. The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful and well loved brands on the planet and we are excited about combining this widespread appeal with Microgaming’s groundbreaking software.”

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy generated $3 billion in worldwide box office receipts and was nominated for a total of 30 Academy Awards®; of which they won 17, including Best Picture.

- Ends -

Everything points to the intent to have 3 separate slots on offer to players in the end, the same as the new Batman deal points to there being both slots available.

The removal of the first LOTR when the second was launched came before the issue with the Tolkien estate that eventually lead to the second being pulled, and plans for the third being axed.

The deals for both also suggest that unlike most games, these will only run for a specific number of years before everything has to be renegotiated, or the games retired.

This slot ...looks to be very high variance
Just to chime in on this there are a couple of indicators that means I tend to agree with Balthazar.

Firstly, lots of features normally trades off against a lowered variance. Secondly, with a "brand" it is unusual for the developer to go too high as it could lead to the brand being damaged if player feedback is poor. There are odd exceptions - the first LOTR that (for reasons unknown) was subsequently withdrawn and Iron Man 2 springs to mind but even there, Playtech released a second 50-line version a while later which lowered the variance (and the RTP).

Conversely, one strong sign of higher variance is a big gap between 4oak and 5oak. For example where 5oak pays 10x a 4oak.
