Stake account stolen

So yesterday my stake account was stolen and I lost it. They also got my Gmail account but I was able to recover that. Unfortunately they added TFA on the stake account so when I went to change the password I couldn't.

I contacted recovery@stake.com and provided them with endless evidence that it was my account. I even sent through screenshots of big wins I had. I emailed them screenshots from my crypto wallet showing transactions going to stake and a detailed report of the sport bets I made (I have a spreadsheet).
In the end they asked for me to send through a selfie with ID. I refused, only because I never send through ID via email. Its unsecure and I'm not prepared to lose anything else. After all, its just a casino account and my balance was zero anyway.

As I wouldn't send them my ID they cancelled my complaint and so the thief got away with it. I was disappointed that they couldn't care less about the account and I asked for them to block the account and ask whoever has access to provide them with ID. They refused.

As I trawled through the internet what I discovered, after having spoken to quite a few other people was that Stake accounts are regularly stolen and sold. In fact there is a subreddit on reddit which is specifically there for the purpose of stealing people's Stake account.

I find the whole saga quite disheartening. Its not about the money. Its the fact that people out there are stealing a fucken casino account.

I'm afraid to say that Stake's reputation is not exactly the best, so the fact this has happened is not overly surprising. My worry, if this was me, was that someone was using my details in a casino account. I am not exactly sure what they would be able to do, but my first guess is that some sort of money laundering might be possible.

Maybe other members have had experiences of hijacked accounts that may be able to advise you better.

Sorry this happened to ya, spindoctor. I'm really glad they didn't steal any crypto from you. Unfortunately it's 2025 and I would trust the average Stake customer less than the average person.

Disclosure: I work in IT/systems/geek stuff. You know how doctors have the Hippocratic oath? I have a similar moral code burning in my bosom, and I feel like I need to do my spiel. Forgive me!

This is why more and more websites are mandating MFA, and with crypto casinos especially, you need to be using it. You really, really ought to set it up on your primary email account, too: once someone has access to that, that's where shit can get really scary. I'm glad you got it back. Check your sent items to make sure they didn't send anything out. Check your deleted items. If there's a link in your deleted items for "recover recently deleted email," (i.e. stuff recently deleted from the trash), check that too.

I know MFA is a pain at first, but it's only going to get easier and easier for bad actors to take over accounts protected with password only. Once you get used to the Authenticator, it's really not that bad. Choose Authenticator Code over SMS/email when possible.

And since both your Stake account and your Gmail account got compromised, I'm guessing you were using the same password on both? If you are using that password anywhere else, change it ASAP.

The irony is I work in IT security. The Gmail account associated is just a gambling one so nothing in there is particularly important. I have 2FA on everything else but didn't think anyone would actually steal a casino account. To an extent its partially my fault as I should fucken know better.

I keep my gambling stuff separate from everything else so passwords and information will never be compromised in that sense.

I can see why Stake isn't regarded highly for customer service though. Disappointed in how useless they have been.

Well shit! Just bad luck then. I'm glad you know the security rigamarole: I wish we had an Internet where people played nice, but alas. Again: at least this happened on an account with zero balance, and frankly you deserve a better establishment than Stake anyway! :p

For what it's worth, I switched to Metawin recently and haven't looked back. Way better support: I, too, had a negative experience with Stake support. Metawin just has good ethos, better comps/rewards than I'm used to, a commitment to using the highest RTP available on third-party games, etc. So far, anyway, it's been a good experience.

Is Metawin a regular casino or is it a social casino with prizes?

It's a regular crypto casino with a pretty lively chat (better than others' I've seen that are full of really gross people) and the usual smorgasbord of modern games with the typical house games. They support all the big cryptos (I use XRP for the speed and low tx cost), and I've withdrawn around $3k once (Baron Bloodmore and Tiger Rush were being really nice!) and got it within 30 seconds, no fuss.

(I've obviously lost most of that since then, lol.)

Ok, is it any good.. reliable etc? I haven't heard of it before.
I promise I'm not a shill! (But that's what a shill WOULD say, huh? Lol. But really, it's the best experience I've had with crypto sites so far.)

It's the instant banking, regular email promos, and better-than-average loyalty scheme. No BS with bonus offers either. I just switched from chips.gg after chips.gg had the audacity to expire VERY hard-earned weekly and monthly bonuses after 24 hours.

You can find other folks' opinions about Metawin on Reddit and bitcointalk's gambling sub-forum, the latter of which being where I learned about the site.

I concur with @Glunn11, it is a decent crypto casino.

They recently had something like $4m worth of crypto stolen from their hot wallets but took out loans to cover any player funds that were lost. Probably not what you’d expect from a crypto casino. Commendable.

aside from stealing a crypto balance what is the point of stealing somebody elses casino account?
You can actually purchase Stake accounts with varying levels of verification on the black market. The higher the VIP level, the more the account will cost. I guess stealing verified accounts is one source of these sold accounts…

Reloads and weekly bonuses. I was getting a daily reload for the next 30 days of around $20 day. My weekly bonus was around $100 a week and my monthly would be around $600. Its all wager free. While its not a lot for some, the folks that do all the no good stuff are based in poorer regions. I know the ones who took my account were based in Turkey.

Very sensible advice. I don't even trust any form of cloud, other than my own which is my own personal Synology NAS. I don't know any of my passwords, including the one I use to access this forum. All my passwords are stored in a password protected file ( yes I know the password to access that lol ) - so you put a gun to my head and I wouldn't be able to provide anything.

2FA / MFA is setup everywhere also.

One can never be too anal about security.

This is one of those bits of wisdom where the converse is also true: one can never be too secure about their anus.

(Sorry just woke up lol. Thanks for the great advice yourself: I couldn't live without my password file.)
