This is a must-see, Ainsworth/Aristocrat didn't like it and it was pulled by YT but poster won the copyright claim and it's back. Here you will see some secrets of slot developers and the usage of psychology to make them addictive. Plus the math and how RTP is set etc. Spare an hour to watch this, a very informative documentary. The 'positive' sounds when you get micro wins (less than stake for the spin) are a large part of the brainwashing.

In rats they could actually override the will to live in repetitive experiments and kill them. I told you St*rb*rst and Microcloning were dangerous!

I love a good documentary. I will watch it now :)

Audio on slots plays a massive part in the compulsive gameplay...I think it even edges the visual 'addiction' of seeing a good win. Just look at BTG, they've got it down to a fine art

Will watch it a bit later, looks interesting

Am I the only one who NEVER plays with audio on?!?!!? Strangely enough I have never bought into the noise side of things, just more interested in visuals!

So this explained perfectly why all online casinos are forced out of Australia.
It’s not only Australia, in another country another finance minister tried to introduce limits to the daily loss on pokies and was basically forced to resign.

Although overly dramatic, the video makes some excellent points. Governments should stop looking at gambling as a cash cow and start limit players loses. Slots should be checked for fair mechanics (no fake near miss and fake reel visuals) have high TRTP and clear chances for a win. Loss limits everywhere and super fast irreversible payouts. And of course tax only on net profit for both the industry and the player and open market for better product.

The problem is not the industry, they will do what you let them do.
The problem IMHO is the country that will sign exclusivity deal with the land based operator with the lowest TRTP in the world and will say to the best online casino in the world: “Give me 35% of your last 2 years Gross Gambling Revenue and I will let you compete for an unknown number of licenses that will cost you an unknown amount of money for an unknown number of years.”

This is very hard hitting but I think a lot of people here need to watch it.

Take breaks and play safely! and set limits!!

Well it kinda only opens peoples eyes to people who do not know how they have been built in the first place. But even for the people that do know. They do still fall victim to it as well.

But it did make some good points like the fact unless you self exclude there is nothing forcing the staff to chuck you out.

But either way has it made me want to give it up? I can not answer.

And to be fair. just because you play with the audio off, doesn't mean you wont get addicted to the slots any less. It isn't just the sounds that trigger the dopamine in the brain. The fact more and more slots now display coin effects for even smaller and smaller wins even wins of 5X on some slots. That has the same affect as watching it and hearing the sounds that go along with the coin win animations.

Don’t take cause and affect studies too seriously. They are interesting and have a point, but let me ask you this: What about love? What about our favourite team scoring a goal? What about emotions in general? Should we lobotomise ourselves to stop feelings and be safe, like in that movie (The Giver 2014)?

You would make slots almost the same way if you just wanted them to be fun and interesting. Some will use them to start feeling something, some others to stop feeling something else. And slots would still be very dangerous, but the biggest danger, the biggest problem, is chasing losses.

I dont really buy into the sound stuff overall. I personally find most slots to be absolutely annoying in the base game. Are you trying tell me, they made bonanza sound like that to get people addicted? The only time I had that music on is when I started my youtube channel and needed the music in case I got a bonus. Aside from that, it is shut off every time. And same with other slots, I just listen to music.

Now when I hit a bonus on most games, I pause my music and turn the slot up because the bonus round is enticing. I love the Amber song, Jurassic park noises and game of thrones theme.

I will admit that Microgaming Big wins are very very enticing. I love the look, the sound and the feel.

Now if you want to discuss visuals, absolutely without question. How they make a slot look is almost everything to me. From the characters to the colors to how the bonus rounds work etc. One of the best being the wild desire feature. If you actually stare at it, the graphics are awesome. Or the wildstorm when they grey clouds form, or the champagne bottles popping up.

I am not going to bash software providers at all. It's their job to design something enticing. I mean honestly, I would be pissed off and less entertained if I had to look at average shitty graphics and lose my money. I am there to be entertained with the realization I will probably lose.

If every slot was as boring and ugly as zoom, I would not play and would rather go buy scratch offs or play bingo for my source of entertainment.

I really do not like these slot providers sexualizing their slots now. It seems to be becoming more common. Less clothing on the females and more sexual features. If you click on the boobs in moon princess, she makes a noise. You can activate the bouncing boob feature in 7 sins, the new sexual screeches on that new slot and slots like twerk. I mean why not leave that sort of stuff to pornhub? Does it attract more slot players? I have no idea but I personally avoid those slots because I find them annoying. I want to play slots and have fun not have cartoon characters moaning like they are getting a 12 inch rod shoved into them

OK, OK point taken - I'll leave the female slot characters alone from now on.....:D

Back to point, the Tasty Street slot by MG I reviewed recently is possibly the worst example of this sexualisation. Mind you, Scandinavian Hunks my redress the balance a little bit for you....

I was addicted to the UK pub machines in my youth, a totally ridiculous situation, because I knew that I could never recover that lost money, due to fixed low maximum payouts, but carried on putting my hard earned money in regardless.

Experiencing that must have served as some kind of inoculation, because I can now take 'em or leave 'em, and tend to leave 'em. The only time I play slots is when I'm given free spins.

Excellent, well sourced documentary, I learned a few things.

It's odd because whilst I obviously put a lot of emphasis on the music and SFX in my games, what this documentary suggests is certainly not the reason I do things. I use music and SFX to set the scene - to set the mood as it were. It is also used to reinforce player interaction and positive reinforcement for wins etc.

But this is no different to a standard computer game, or a TV show or a movie. The sounds are there to enhance the experience of course but not "to cause addiction". The fact they might help this shows more about the human psyche than it does about our industry doing stuff wrong.

Why do Ginsters make their pasties so nice or Carling make their Lager taste nice. It's to get you to enjoy it and come back. Where is the documentatary about Strongbow making cider taste nice forcing people to become alcoholics.

Addiction is not something we want or need. It's not really out fault that some people can't help themselves whilst others are more than capable of self control...

Whilst the end user of course shares the biggest responsibility, slot developers also should play their part.

Take Book of Dead as an example. They upgraded the slots recently (there is a topic about it elsewhere) and it now spins so much faster. It simply means that money is going to be lost quicker (as slots are designed to do that as you know for yourself). There is no option to let it spin slower.

How is that ethical? And wasn't it done just for that reason only - to make money faster for the casinos.

What do you do at Aristocrat?

Aristocrat big daddy: "building better mouse traps"

what a cool cat.

but only a very stupid mouse would go into a trap of which
it knows its a trap.

that's why this mouse isn't getting traped (like this) anymore.

FU CATS!:eek::cool::thumbsup:

I'd only recently discovered the 'old' BOTD and realized what a well-paced game it was, and why it's so popular. I think the speeding up of modern gameplay is one thing, but to desecrate older games is a disgrace. DOA's revamp was already the first sign....just leave the old games as they were

Companies' greed is limitless and a complete sham. They're willing to forego any semblance of gameplay for quicker profits....quick spin is already featured on most games so why ruin a good thing?

Why play Book of the Dead now, when for the same funds I can play three times longer on say Adventure Palace. It's as if companies resent the notion of allowing the player to have a lengthy session on a game, the greedy bastards

thank you Dunover, I spent one hour to see this video and - despite I could not understand it 100% because my english is not that good- it helped me a lot to realize some things that were hidden somewhere in my poor brain, but not clearly understood.

As about the music / sound, my first reaction was "not me!", but then I thought to my reaction when I get into a new land based casino and I immediately go to the place where I can hear the typical WMS sounds.

But the part that more made me think was the one about "once we tell the gambler to play with responsability, we are ok". I think this approach is bullshit, but it is quite evident that this is helping some people (games manufacturers, casinos, governments, ...) to sleep well, despite they are acting like criminals.

the greedy bastards

It's funny how wizofodds says that if you want people to come back you need slots with 95+ RTP.
I always thought OC had higher RTP because they didn't need a physical location , etc..
but the truth is probably that 95%+-1% is probably the sweet spot where player don't feel THAT cheated
yet you still make tremendous profit.

for hells sake a casino could run slots at 99,9% RTP and they'd still make big bucks given that they have
found enough fools willing to deposit regularly.

A lot of play and go slots are good example of sound being used to this effect while winning, orchestrated music and sounds that ramp up as the wins start rolling in.

Moon Princess for example as well as having the orchestrated music in the base game has a large range of unique sound effects that you only hear if doing well in the free spins and that partly makes me want to play it more.
