President Trump

Who said its policy yet? It was discussion. Whether you like him or not, gotta respect the guy for at least discussing it and talking. Unless you are some passionate leftists who hate him even if he saved a drowning puppy because he should have got there earlier

No I dont remember your daycare comment, it must not have been very interesting

President Obama greeted every single grieving family at sandy hook. Spent the entire day listening to them.

And he never talked about it.

And yes trump wanted to hear them. But trump being trump will do what he always does. He will do whatever he wants if it will keep his base happy and make him money. Sorry.

And it seems he was choosy about who he invited. Didn’t invite the students who started #neveragain. They were the most critical.

But why hasn’t he condemned those pesky Russians yet?

I dont even know whats going on with that anymore. I stopped reading and listening to it and avoid it so I can tbe the one to answer that question.

I still think its not just about guns. On Monday this kid was arrested. People who want to murder others dont need a gun

Really? He took on parents of murdered children the people it effects the most...How can that even be questioned? I would have rather listened to adults speak about it instead of angry 17 year old who probably dont even have the proper questions or knowledge

President Obama spent an entire day listening to grieving parents at sandy hook. So yes it’s the human thing to do.

And I think you might be all underestimating the angry 17 year olds cuz at one time a bunch of young teenagers helped a war come to an end. Veitnam.

And it’s interesting that the students with the strong passionate voices and opinions and the critical ones are being lambasted for being angry that their friends died. Or that they were shot at. Or that they are afraid to go to school. And that they want to change the gun laws.

It’s quite fascinating to watch a bunch of adults outright dismiss these survivors and try to paint them in a bad light. It’s quite sad actually. That all of the pro trump media is trying to paint this as a conspiracy.

If you’ve ever faced the barrel of a gun. You know the feeling. You never want to be there again.

You're pretty fair and accepting usually, so like goatwack says, I respect your opinion :D

I saw a difference between the two though. I saw Trump outright asking parents ideas, he suggested ideas and asked for their feedback and he sat down and had a meeting with them prior. If he does nothing after all that I will be very disappointed in him. Very. But I think he will make some big changes.

Im not sure what other media is saying about them, I havent read anything really I try to stay away from these things because its sad. But when I say the word angry it isnt meant as insult, they have that right...but I still believe the people that were there today were the right ones. A couple of those parents actually have organizations dedicated to this stuff too so they are experts in the area. I just dont see what 17 year old could have brought to the conversation aside from "we need changes what are you going to do". If you are referring to my earlier comments about kids mad at Trump, I still stand by that. They should have been angry at the FBI if they wanted to direct it somewhere.

And the vietnam thing was a very different situation.

I posted this experience in Abidjan some time ago in a different thread on how I had a kid soldier stopping the car I was traveling in and was asking me for money while holding his Kalashnikov to my head with one hand and a sniffing bag with glue in the other hand.

It certainly left a lasting impression on me, especially how terrifyingly scared I can become of losing my life early. And I was some 35 years old than, not 16 or 17 like these kids.

Google what Obama did and tried to do after Sandy Hook, only to have all Republicans (and some Democrats) voting against changes. Do you really believe Mr. T, whose campaign has been sponsored by the NRA with some $30 Million, will make big changes?

And google the NRA statement from today, they are already bringing themselves into position to oppose any changes.

Quite a coincidence that Im actually just surfing around and came across this too. Didnt search it or anything it was an ad on my facebook linked to CNN.

29 killed by knives. I think the people who think take away the guns is the answer, are a bit too gullible

I dont need to google it, I live in this part of the country. It was a different time with different ideas. And just because the NRA bought ads for their own cause doesnt mean Trump is in their pocket.

If co-ordinated, and determined enough one can do a lot of damage in large crowds. I suppose the argument against gun use is that it's usually lone attackers, who without firearms wouldn't cause as much carnage in such a small amount of time.

i hear ya harry. i know exactly the fear...i still have nightmares/ptsd about my own experiences as a teenager and being shot at....so yeah...they are angry...they want to be normal....and do normal things not have to worry about being gunned down at school of all places....

the world has gone crazy....i for one blame the media...they overdo everything....hype everything and just there is no detail small enough that it isn't reported...i hate them.

What different time and ideas? It was only some 5 years ago.

Mr. T's NRA speech quotes:

"And it's truly wonderful to be back in Atlanta, and back with my friends at the NRA. You are my friends, believe me.

But you came through for me, and I am going to come through for you. I was proud to receive the NRA’s earliest endorsement in the history of the organization.

You have a true friend and champion in the White House.

So let me make a simple promise to every one of the freedom-loving Americans in the audience today: As your President, I will never, ever infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Never ever. Freedom is not a gift from government. Freedom is a gift from God."

And you are convinced he will make some big changes???

Yeah its true for sure. Still think if a person wants to kill they will..just probably a lot less people with a knife than a gun

I think they need to get rid of automatics and all this other crap. Have your handgun for protection and rifles for hunting. Backround checks etc. Here in Canada some highschools have a small police station inside to deter drugs and fights. So it wouldnt be new to introduce something like that. Even some have metal detectors.

The media should stop reporting it completely. Stop giving them a stage.

Really, you think a left administration is the same as the right? You think Obama conducted the same type of meetings? Dont make me use an eyeroll emote with you Harry.

Whats that quote supposed to mean? i didnt know this conversation only meant the only viable option is to ban all guns.

Did trump suggest arming teachers with guns?

My god. Not only are our teachers overworked and underpaid they will now have the responsibility of having a gun in their classroom.

The teachers don’t want guns in the class.
The students don’t want guns in the class.

Why is this even a suggestion.

And didn’t trump sign an executive order to repeal the obama background checks for mentally ill people who want to buy guns...not that it would have stopped this shooting but what about those to come.

Am I the only one who thinks the world has really gone crazy?

One of the laws allows gun owners to carry weapons in national parks; that law took effect in February 2012 and replaced President Ronald Reagan's policy of required guns be locked in glove compartments of trunks of car that enter national parks.

Another gun law signed by Obama allows Amtrak passengers to carry guns in checked baggage, a move that reversed a measure put in place after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"In this country, we have a strong tradition of gun ownership that's handed from generation to generation. Hunting and shooting are part of our national heritage. And, in fact, my administration has not curtailed the rights of gun owners - it has expanded them, including allowing people to carry their guns in national parks and wildlife refuges." Obama 2011

Meh he probably got threatened he would lose his job.

I see that heartless no good bastard Trump is such an evil person he is having a session to let parents voice their opinions and suggestions on what should be done about school shootings. How dare he care

Its pretty sad to watch. A father quite emotional out right now that he lost this daughter and the system should have been fixed after the first shooting and saying stop working against each other, work with everyone work with the president whoever and fix it.

Alot of the parents are quite thankful and sat down before the meeting with Trump and Pence and discussed issues

Took alot for people to get fed up or maybe they have been fed up and Trump is giving them a voice finally.

Really heartbreaking to see the pain these people have

At least all the media covered it.

Trump is not the only one. And this was a sitdown to discuss different options. This is what happens when you try to figure out a policy to move forward with.

Atleast its being discussed which is what everyone wants and demanded in this thread.

4 Teachers were killed, I suppose there is a case to be made that if they were armed, etc..

The rescinding of the executive order was for only people collecting Social Security Disability Benefits.

those who would have been reported by the agency had to meet two main criteria: a) They were receiving full disability benefits because of a mental illness and couldn't work and b) they were unable to manage their own benefits, thus needing the help of a third party to do so.

Seems odd that a person that needs a third party to handle their affairs would be able to handle the responsibility of a firearm. What case did someone make to get Trump to reverse it?

Left people don't want any thing other than collecting all the guns. It will just move underground like booze did.

I rarely visit this thread (because quite frankly the ridiculously blinkered supporters of Trump's policies really make me more frustrated than the elusive 'D' on Bonanza). Anyway, for me this says it all...

(and no, this doesn't mean you should arm teachers. (I'm sure that noise you may have heard when your President suggested it was billions of eyes rolling at the sheer stupidity of that bluster coming from his mouth. Stop gun violence with more guns? In what world does this ever make any sense?)).

(I think I'm best ducking back out of this thread now - no doubt the Trump / NRA / Republicans will be up in arms (pun intended) at the horror of suggesting how ridiculous their archaic views on this subject are).

That is absolutely not true....I think this is nra scare tactics....do we really need ar15’s.
And gadgets that will turn your rifles into machine guns. Some form of common sense here.

Oh you can be sure that's all I've ever heard from the news reports, Columbine onwards, and I've always thought (like most people who find gun ownership alien) that America should crack on with abolishing the Wild West mentality. Having seen Obama and co's attempts to take on the big boys however and lose badly, I'm convinced more than ever that gun- bearing will be around indefinitely, unfortunately.

Oh only people on social security....there are no people on social security that are mentally ill....makes sense.

As for teachers...
The logic in your argument then:
17 teens were killed....there is case for them to be armed too then. they should all have guns.

They had an armed guard at the school. He went right by him.

Teachers with guns is the most ludicrous thing to come out of this gun control discussion.
And let’s wait until the first mishap happens. When a teacher shoots a student because he/she thought he was gonna shoot up the class. Or when a student gets a hold of that gun in some scuffle or just because he/she thought it would be a great prank...

Teacher union stated they do not want guns.
Students are protesting. They do not want guns
Guns do not belong in the classroom.

Why is this even being suggested. Why isn’t the most logical thing being suggested by the people in government....like Making it harder for mentally ill people to get guns. And making ar15 guns not available to every person out there.

Most mass shootings were done with the ar15.

Common sense. Does that exist anymore?

No. That's what I'm saying too. It went out at the advent of all this technology - too much too soon. Social Media is especially to blame, where hurt feelings and echo chambering takes precedence over common sense. I'm always bleeting that common sense has left society. Just ask my partner

Either that or I really have turned into Victor Meldrew :(

OK I cant keep silent - as I have said before I'm from the UK - I don't understand the American voting system and I haven't educated myself. Sorry.

All I saw was that somehow America ended up with 2 complete "nightmares" as their choices Donald and Hilary - how do you choose ??- how did you let it get to that point !!! Never in my 56 years have I seen such a hobsons choice - no wonder its a mess - it would have been either way I am sure.

As for guns - so some people think its a good idea to arm more people - totally nuts !! Guns kill - the more people that have them the more will die. Either on purpose or by accident ! Many more innocent people. Teachers with guns - having to decide should i shoot? - is he/she a risk ?- can I aim properly, will I hit someone else by mistake - just noooooo, they are there to teach not be Clint Eastward !!

I'm American and proud! I love my country, but something seriously needs to be done with gun control. Would this kid have been able to obtain a gun if they were illegal. I doubt it. But we need to look at the whole picture and how this could have been avoided which was on several levels, but ultimately the ease of getting the gun created the mass murder, without the this it either wouldnt have taken place or the death count would be lower with another weapon. I pray we find a solution to our gun laws. God Bless America!

Listening to some NRA speeches in CPAC. I didn't know Europe was such a scary place for americans :p Things must be pretty shitty here if they're so scared of our socialism.

And people say how "liberals" are so gullible. How mainstream media is biased or whatever. And then they are so excited about whatever NRA is saying. America has basically law of the jungle. Survival of the fittest and screw the rest.

Why could this not happen with the armed security guard? Are you assuming teachers would not be trained?

When a teacher shoots a student because he/she thought he was gonna shoot up the class. Or when a student gets a hold of that gun in some scuffle or just because he/she thought it would be a great prank...

btw, they had 1 guard on a campus of 3000 students.

Have you considered if/when the AR15 is banned that something else would replace it (a new weapon of choice)?

I'm not sure why you think everyone can get an AR15, its banned in my state.

Seven states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws banning assault weapons. The others are California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. In addition, Minnesota and Virginia regulate assault weapons, the center said.

Sorry, no its not the people on social security, its the people on social security disability AND who need a third party to handle their affairs.

Where do you get your information?

yes...i meant to say people on social security disability. typing error.

and no i didn't assume teachers wouldn't be trained. which brings me to my point...trained professionals NEVER shoot anyone by mistake. right? police who are highly trained never make mistakes....they have never shot anyone by mistake......so teachers wouldn't either right? there is no case for it.

Guns have no place in a school. it's that simple. why this is even being considered is beyond the absurd.

there was a kid who was mistaken for the shooter in parkland...he had 7 guns pointed at him and he knew enough to not reach into his pocket to put away his phone and risk getting shot....so please your logic that teachers would be trained ...mistakes like this one happen.....this goes beyond the call of duty for teachers. you do not pay them enough. and frankly the teachers union has said they do not want to carry guns. the students do not want guns.

seven states banned the ar15. yes and your point is...7 out of 52 states...and 7 more regulate....ok....and?
yes people who intend to harm...will harm regardless...and will find ways...but why make it easy....

i'm trying to be very respectful of your point of view...but i just don't see how having teachers carry or have guns in their classroom will help and not make the problem worse. i believe you have the right to have your guns...i believe you should be able to protect yourself...i believe it is one's right to own a gun....but please do not tell me that the solution to these mass shootings at school are more guns.

the usa is the only country in the world that has this gun problem....sorry....and the answer to the problem is more guns...by all means...arm teachers....arm students...have more armed guards...have everything you need to get more guns into schools...this is the solution that i can't see.

i'm done with this argument...moving on....

Do you know how many teachers would be going to school with arms? IIRC, I heard in a report it would be 100's x the current police force!

Do you really think that arming 100,000's of teachers would make it go away? Is it then better when only a dozen dies from the shooter until the teacher manages to hit him/her? It is still 12 kids lost due to assault weapons which are meant for war zones not for schools!!!!

Don't forget that a lot of people own dozens of guns. I am wondering for what? How many does one need to defend against an intruder? Maybe some hand grenades as well and proper machine guns?

This shooter bought apparently 10 rifles and hundreds of rounds in the past year! That is just mind blowing, allowing a 18-year old to stash a whole arsenal without even questioning!

Am I the only one who thinks the world has really gone crazy?

Here's what Mr. T tweeted today, just unbelievable IMHO to have a president trying to support this.

“20% of teachers, a lot, would now be able to … immediately fire back if a savage sicko came to a school with bad intentions. Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this.”

“ATTACKS WOULD END! History shows that a school shooting lasts, on average, 3 minutes. It takes first responders 5 to 8 minutes to get to site of crime. Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive. GREAT DETERRENT!”

According to the latest stats there are about 3.6 million teachers in the US as of 2017. Arming 20% would mean 720.000 teachers walking around with weapons!!! The gun makers will love Trump if he does it. Imagine about $500 for a hand gun x 720,000 = $360 Million in extra sales, not including ammunition!!!

Only Trump can think that this is a good idea.

Public school systems will employ about 3.2 million full-time-equivalent (FTE) teachers in fall 2017, such that the number of pupils per FTE teacher—that is, the pupil/teacher ratio—will be 16.1. This ratio is higher than the 2007 ratio of 15.4. A projected 0.4 million FTE teachers will be working in private schools this fall, resulting in an estimated pupil/teacher ratio of 12.2, which is lower than the 2007 ratio of 13.0

By the way, the teachers released this:

The American Federation of Teachers passed a resolution condemning calls to arm teachers. “Anyone who wants guns in schools has no understanding of what goes on inside them – or worse, doesn’t care,” the union president, Randi Weingarten, said in a statement.

Can't say it's the ideal solution, arming teachers. This is only going to escalate tensions surely. So now teachers are going to get marked, because they'll be the first targets a crazed gunman would go for. And what if a teacher loses his cool from the hostile environment and does the shooting first?

Possibly one of the less thought-out proposals from Trump, and given the recent consoling of parents and talk of tackling mental illness in youngsters, this appears like a reactionary and somewhat regressive step

It's not realistic, you're not going to collect 300 million guns or get the second amendment nullified which is what you really want.

Of course its not an ideal solution but its better than being a sitting duck.

From the comments here, it seems as though not many people know the political system in the USA. All of you guys saying just bans guns, do you realize how long that would take to try and get passed and the court cases and uproar etc? There would be 500 more school shootings before it even happened and a different president or maybe 2 more presidents after all is said and done.

Also, there seems to be this notion that teachers are weak little cowards who dont know how to use a gun or want to know how. Some teachers have come forward volunteering to do it.

Putting a few guns in a school in a safe or having a police office or undercover in the school would be a lot better than absolutely nothing. And believe it or not if these shooters knew there were armed people in the school it would probably deter them more so than not.

Im all for it if its a quick fix for now until they figure out their broken system.

And if Canada can have small police offices in their schools, I am sure USA can make this a nationwide policy.

There wasnt 2. There was 21 to choose from.

yes...i meant to say people on social security disability. typing error.

and no i didn't assume teachers wouldn't be trained. which brings me to my point...trained professionals NEVER shoot anyone by mistake. right? police who are highly trained never make mistakes....they have never shot anyone by mistake......so teachers wouldn't either right? there is no case for it.

Do you think teachers don't carry guns already?
