Or creature?

Was looking up something this morning and ran across the following. I don't know, it just struck me funny and then odd and then no really, what the heck do they mean? 'or creature'? no I haven't looked up creature. I'm almost afraid to.

I'm still trying to come up with a snappy answer to what a novice creature in religion could be...

Since it's taking so long, I guess 'snappy' is out.

As far as a creature novice in a religious sense, I got nuthin'.

I think novice is used for trainee nuns and monks (from "novitiate")or whatever these callings are titled in other religions.

And I think "novice" is pretty widely used to denote young sportsmen and women.

But the "creature" and "sports" connection has me stumped.

I lean toward Swamp's "horseracing" though.

Yeah I think novice would work for racing or even for maybe tracking dogs, stuff like that. Like the novice St. Bernard brings cold beer instead of hot rum to the avalanche victims.
