Was looking up something this morning and ran across the following. I don't know, it just struck me funny and then odd and then no really, what the heck do they mean? 'or creature'? no I haven't looked up creature. I'm almost afraid to. :p

"A novice is a person or creature who is new to a field or activity. The term is most commonly applied in religion and sports.

I think novice is used for trainee nuns and monks (from "novitiate")or whatever these callings are titled in other religions.

And I think "novice" is pretty widely used to denote young sportsmen and women.

But the "creature" and "sports" connection has me stumped.

I lean toward Swamp's "horseracing" though.
