New Windows 8

Makes you want to defenestrate your computer. If you purchase any computer after the release date, you're forced into the new Windows. They need to learn that a new interface every couple of years is more than annoying - it sucks.

Thinking about the hours that I've wasted relearning how to navigate Windows every two years really pisses me off.

Agreed!

I would've been happy with XP for at least the next ten years!:D

My little Windows Theory

Windows 8 will suck, know why? Okay this is my personal theory, but every seconds Windows is good and the other ones suck.

Windows 7 -> Great
Windows Vista -> OMG forget it
Windows XP -> Great
Windows 2000 -> not super bad but not god either
Windows 98 -> Great (considering the time when it was published)

That's why Windows 8 will suck, and I don't want to use it

Well if it's not the operating systems it's the browsers.

I really hate when they move everything around in the interface so you waste all kinds of time just looking for some damn button they moved to bum-f Egypt.

with Windows 7 there are actually 6 different operating systems.. W7 Home, Professional and Ultimate in both 32 and 64 bits... all behave differently with different options... I can tell you from experience that you want all your boxes to be on the same version on your LAN... or you will be sorry... :(

This really looks like it will suck. LOL.

"Hey, let's replace the Start menu with this big honkin' full-screen application that requires you to click through 10x as much to get anything done! But hey, it's OK, because you can TOUCH the buttons with your hands. KEWL!!11!111!!"

It's not rocket science that you need a different interface for handheld, touch-based devices than you do for a keyboard-and-mouse PC. If they actually try to publish this to PCs, I can't see how they won't be digging their own grave.

Still using Windows XP on this computer

Still using Windows 98SE on my other one:p

I know there are some who dislike XP, but it is (at least in my opinion) user friendly. My daughter uses Vista and it's just one problem after another. My grandson has to do his computer homework at school most times as they don't have compatible programs at home. My son has Windows 7 on his laptop and is considering going back to XP. And these newer software programs aren't reasonably priced for the average joe. Who wants to spend $300 to $400 every few years for the newest version of windows? And then have to spend hours trying to figure it out...

If Microsoft are not careful, they risk losing market share to some of the free OSs that can be downloaded. The main barrier is that they have to be learned from scratch, but if they change too much between an old and new version of Windows, people might decide they might as well try, for example, ubuntu, than learn a completely new Windows interface that could change again in a couple of years.

Exactly. In my opinion, the disadvantages often outweigh the advantages. I mean, if you compare XP and Vista, why in God's sake would you want to switch to vista? You have to learn a new interface and struggle with the crappy vista itself, which was a mess, really

I Love my Windows XP!!! Before I had that I had Windows 98 and it was easy to use. I saw Vista and thought it stunk so I had to shop around for a new computer that I could get XP on. Truth be told? I want to use XP til I die! Or drool too much to use a damn computer. And that's a fact!! :p

And what's up with the constant upgrading of Adobe Reader every time you turn around?

Second that.
I use XP and I wont upgrade to anything else until I, for some reason, really HAVE to.
I build my own puters so its me who decides what operatingsystem gets installed.
XP is fast, easy to use, stable as a rock and it hardly takes any resources.
XP rules!:D

I took delivery of a new computer a week or so ago and made the (enforced) switch from XP Pro to Windows 7-whatever.

I've been slowed down considerably ever since as I familiarise myself with the new OS, which I don't find as user-friendly and easy to assimilate as XP.

Ironically, I ordered the new hardware and boosted memory to get the latest i7 stuff in order to have more computing power:rolleyes:

I can therefore heartily endorse the comments here about these changes every few years by MS - it's a real PIA and me no like.

I'm hoping that in time I'll be more comfortable with 7, but I do miss XP.

I skipped Vista entirely on hearing all the moans and groans about it.

As for Windows 8 - it looks like it may be even tougher to come to terms with.

It seems like MS goes several versions in a row where the OS is awful, and then you have one "gem" which users are reluctant to give up. I think the worst one I ever used was 2000 pro. The silly thing was crashing every other day. I'm saving my pennies to build another computer (since I've been using my sons backup after mine got fried from a lightening strike).

I've figured it will cost me about $400 to rebuild a new computer and can have all the specs I'm comfortable with. The only downer is (and I can't remember for the life of me where I read it), is that MS is going to stop providing updates and compatible software for XP starting next year (which IMO is a very BIG mistake).

And that just pisses me off to no end!! That to me makes no sense. If I buy a new car, I do not want to hear I can't get replacement parts after 2 or 3 years. Why does MS think it is OK to sell you something and then not allow help or replacement software to keep you running smooth. I gotta quit posting about this crap, it makes me very crazy!!

Because Windows XP was released in October, 2001. This means that they supported XP for 10 Years, which is okay in my opinion because 1. this is an appropriate time for a software and 2. you can still use it afterwards for quite a while.
By the way, Windows XP was great but Windows 7 is so much better. When I had Windows XP, I had to format my harddisc every 6-12 months. I got Windows 7 for over 3 years now, and I never had to format it, because my system is still super fast.

The time will come boys and girls when no one (or very few) will even be producing desktops as we know them. And what old folks like me are gonna do with itty bitty hold in my hand computers, I'll never know...

Loved XP... Solid as a rock. Hubby still has it on his computer and even when given the chance a couple years ago to buy a new tower, he wouldn't do it, because it would have Win7 on it. We spent bucks upgrading his existing computer as much as I could. Bigger power supply, graphics card, RAM, etc. It's not the fastest horse in the stable but it does what he needs it to do.

I have become 'used' to Vista, as it is on this desktop and my computer at work. It's not a dog (like Win 95 was - everyone should have sued MS over that POS), but a few more problems than XP.

Win7 on my laptop. OMG! There's things on there I don't need/want/use, and have no clue what they are. LOL I have IE9 on it, and it seems to work ok. Can't run IE9 on any of my Vista systms... crashes every few minutes. And yeah yeah, I know... change browsers, ... but some software (like Quickbooks at work) integrates with the browser for a few things and that browser is IE.

So anyway... not looking forward to 'learning' a new OS meant for a tablet. It will be cobbled up, Frankenstein crap, at least untill a year or so after general release and they get the worst of the bugs out. IMO

And herein lies the problem. How many average joes know how to handle these unexpected "bugs"? They don't, so they then need to rely on a well versed MS tech to walk them through a "fix". Ever try to "talk" to the techies? I've had more than my share hang up on me as I knew more than they did.

And most people want a system they can plug in and go without having to take a 12 step course on how to boot up, navigate, etc. Technology can be a wonderful thing, but at times it can be its own worst nightmare.

@jod, as long as your system is working/maintained properly, you can still get many years of performance out of XP. I'm going to assume you use mainly for play, chatting and daily searching, NOT for business type work.
You shouldn't have a problem interfacing with new programs targetted at the newer versions of Windows.

My quirk with this is...how much tax payer dollars are going to schools to keep up with these new versions. The average homeowner/user isn't going to keep up (mainly because of cost), so who will lose out when children can't access programs to do school work. Maybe the super minds at MS should start taking into consideration how this is affecting our youth.

The only message MS sends out to me with the new OS every few years is that they are only concerned about the almighty dollar and NOT what it is costing the people who are "supporting" them financially. I'm getting older, so at some point in time I'm going to have to start looking for some school aged kid to "fix" my puter problems or give up surfing the web...:D

lol I have been running Win7 pro 64 bit for almost 2 years now and I love it...
Wouldn't go back to XP or God forbid 98, if they paid me. :p

At first, I had some trouble with getting some older programs to run on the W7 OS, till I figured out the Win7 Compatibility doohickey... Now I can even run some really old Windows 3.5 programs without any problems.

And for the super geeky among us.. 64bit is THE ONLY WAY to go.
A 12 core processor with 16MB of cache and 190GB of memory... Will allow you to do things that you never imagined... Like run every heavy duty program you have and keep open 20 or thirty windows open in three different browsers... all at the same time, all day, all night and nothing crashes.... But wait even if one of programs crash, you don't usually ever have to re-boot the entire computer, just restart the program. If you do a lot of graphics or data processing, the 64bit truly makes a world of difference.

Can you tell I love my W7? cus I do. W7 Pro is the ONLY operating system I have ever had that I have not had to reinstall the operating system several times over a years time (and like I said my oldest W7 box is almost two years old now and I have never had to reinstall the OS on it or any of the other W7 boxes I have).

I've only got to get used to win7 and I think I'll like it. Only thing is, Win8 will be out by then. LOL With win7 only on my laptop, I don't use it enough.

And I think I said win95 was a POS... I meant win98. win95 was solid for me. win98 was something of a daily nightmare till i'd had it for years and downloaded every fix and update known to god and man, and trimmed everything off my C Drive but the absolute essentials. By the time it was working ok, it was time for a new computer w/new OS.

I stay behind the curve when it comes to OS. The one thing I've learned from MS, is it is best for me and my sanity to wait till the first serivce pack is released to install new OS. LOL

@Lots0 -- 12core processor... 190g ram.... <insert Homer Simpson drool here>

I hear your pain about 98... Went through much the same myself. But, I did learn a LOT about doing backups and installing/uninstalling everything using 98...

Mousey, I spent six months buying the parts and then building my system. The hardware is great, but now I need some software that will actually utilize most of that power. Most software, including the operating systems, have no clue what do with that much hardware power.

ERR... Ah... OK... So now I feel like the guy with the great big pick up truck and the little tiny.... you know what...

Am I the only person that sits just a bit further than arms length from their computer screen? Except for my laptop of course...

My laptop came with windows 7 and explorer 8

A recent popup encouraged me to upgrade to explorer 9. So I did and then a host of problems occured including inablility to access my hotmail live email, so I followed the instructions to delete 9. Now even more problems, script errors, permission problems on downloads and the like.

I can only access my email in "safe-mode". Figure that out.

Hotmail and Msn no help at all.

Anyone have any ideas. Can I back up my current email account on disc to preserve my files and info. So that I can open a new email account?

if anyone can help it is appreciated.

Does anyone know of a live computer chat forum. MSN discontinued the chat I belonged to.

thanks
