In these days of clever phishing attempts it pays to check before answering emails from financial companies.

Has anyone else received a notification from Neteller regarding IP tracking and having to pre-advise before making transactions outside one's registered country????

WARNING!

I've just followed up with Neteller on this and they have advised me not to respond to it - presumably it's a scam trying to obtain Neteller account numbers.

Un-warning !!!

Turns out that Neteller screwed up and Support didn't know what Security was doing. I've just had an email from Neteller advising that the original email was genuine after all!

This is the second screw-up this week - previously the out-sourced debit card had brief hassles.

NETELLER CONFIRMS EMAIL ON IP TRACKING (Correction)

Confusion at customer service responsible

This is a correction to yesterday's InfoPowa report titled "BEWARE NETELLER PHISHING SCAM."

In that report an email from [email protected] advising that the e-processor intended re-introducing IP tracking from 31 March was suspected of being a phishing scam and checked with the Neteller client support system, which confirmed it was not a Neteller communication and should be reported to [email protected] and ignored.

Subsequently, the security division of Neteller, which handles phishing complaints, advised that the email was genuine and that the company would be reviewing its "communication policy to ensure all NETELLER staff are informed in advance when communications are sent to NETELLER members to avoid confusion in future."

The email in question advises account holders that IP tracking functionality on their accounts "will be re-instated. This is a security measure to ensure the location of your login matches the country of residence registered with your NETELLER account." It goes on to urge account holders contemplating an overseas trip away from their home country registered with Neteller click on a link, to obtain permission to operate their accounts whilst away from home.

If this is not done, any foreign transactions will be voided, the email claims.
