Movies

Hello Lizzy, I hope you are able to find an available copy if you are renting--"The Help." I'm certain you will laugh and cry. Movies like this are rare--especially these days. Hollywood grinds them out like cheap sausages spending ungodly amounts of money to produce absolute crap the vast majority of the time.

I hope I haven't set the expectation too high. Please let me know how you liked it.

I just watched it last night and was absolutely thrilled with it! It's definitely one of the best films I've ever seen. Probably on my top 10 movie list now.

I definitely did laugh and shed a few tears throughout the movie. It was extremely touching. My husband who thought he wouldn't really be interested in the movie was actually glued to the TV right along with me! And he's very picky about movies.

The acting was so realistic too! It exceeded my expectations :)

Jack Nicholson.
Morgan Freeman.
Tom Hanks.

If any of them are in it, it's a good movie.

Drive and The Help . . . OH Yes, and BREAKING BAD! It plays like REALLY long movie.

Drive is my husband's favorite movie!!!! I heard there might be a second one to come. That would be sooo awesome because I want to know what happens next!

Hi Lizzy! I'm so glad you were not disappointed in "The Help." I'm not surprised at all about your husband also enjoying the movie. Even though all of the major characters are women, it just cannot be classified as a "chick flick."

I really liked "Drive" as well. Yes, Drive, not "Driving Miss Daisy" LOL! Actually I loved "Driving Miss Daisy" too but anyway, back to Drive, it is the first movie I have ever seen Ryan Gosling in. He's definitely a talented actor. He pulls off the aloof thing in Drive so very well and is very good a the "non verbal." I also enjoyed Brian Cranston in the movie and he's in my favorite all time continuing drama from A & E, "Breaking Bad."

I never dreamed I would like "Breaking Bad" nor did my brother who has 30 years experience in law enforcement--mostly the FBI! He actually turned me on to it. We downloaded the first four seasons and watched them consecutively over the course of about a month. It is definitely the best way to watch this crazy show. Season 5, the final season will begin airing in a couple of months. I can't wait!

Speaking of ultra good looking actors named Ryan, for anyone who doubts that Ryan Reynolds is more than a pretty face and perfect physique, I highly recommend Buried.

The less you know about this movie prior to watching, the better. It is for people that like extremely intense and suspenseful movies. Once you start watching, you will have a hard time continuing to watch but most likely, you will NOT be able to turn it off.

It is one of the most overlooked movies in recent years IMO.

Buried is a good film, if you like it, you're bound to like 127 hours

Just saw Snow White and the Huntsman. For any Twilight/Kstew fans this is worth a watch. Great interpretation of an old story. Charlize Theron makes an excellent Evil Queen:thumbsup: Could have sworn that James Earl Jones was the voice of the mirror man-but it was not him. Chris Hemsworth isn't too hard on the eyes either LOL

Harry, I want to see that one, it looks good. I saw Battleship a couple of weeks ago...awesome!! Of course I love alien movies. I'm going to see "What to expect when you are expecting" this week...I've heard it is hilarious. I love movies!! :D

Butterfly-I would watch Battleship just to see Alexander Skarsgard! Love him and his dad! Don't think you would be disappointed in SWATH. Do tell about What to expect after you see it. Immortality started this thread-she is a big movie person too:thumbsup:

I just watched The Immortals (by the producer who made 300, which I absolutely loved!), have to watch it again as I got 'lost/distracted' about a third of the way through the movie. Lots of action, so that wasn't the problem LOL.

Also watched Water for Elephants, have to saw it was a stange movie, not at all what I expected. I didn't dislike it, but I can't say it would make one of my top 100 favs. And not sure it will be one of those movies I will pull off the shelf to watch over again.

What is everyone's opinion on all of these remakes they are doing of movies? I had taken my daughter to see the remake of Footloose for her birthday last year. It was "cute" for today's teenie boppers, but it's a "sin" what they did to the music (IMO). Am waiting see what they have done with Dirty Dancing. They can't write new stuff, so they have to remake old movies now? Some movies just shouldn't be messed with, but that's just my opinion... :D

Have to agree with you about some of these remakes. Can you imagine if they tried to remake Gone with the Wind?

Anyone else interested in starting a group for movie buffs?

Go for it. I'd certainly join. :) I can be the consultant for all things sci-fi and zombie related

My better half is currently on a mission, to watch every movie in the IMDB top 150 (so far she's seen less than 70... a crime). There are a few along the way that I missed myself, so I decided to join her.

Crikey some TERRIBLE movies have made that list. Am I the only one who though 'Chinatown' was a total snoozefest? And 'Gone with the Wind'... more like 'Gone is my will to live'. Am I missing something? People who defend these often say ''Well considering when it came out... It was amazing for it's time etc etc'... I'm sorry but that's just hokem. When colour TV came out that was great for it's time too.... but I'd still rather have my 48' hi def plasma thank you very much. Don't get me wrong... as I have nothing against old movies... they just have to be good too.

LOL-I think your better half and I have a lot in common. IMDB is one of my best friends. I think maybe I will look in to starting this group as a project over the weekend! Your contributions would be great:)

As for Gone with the Wind...Frankly my dear......:p (kidding)

Just seen Prometheus - there are gaping plot holes in that movie that you could swing planets through. I don't want to give anything away with details incase some readers are looking forward to seeing it - although tbh i found the whole thing very predictable - but the characterisation is very weak, the dialogue is hammy and the story makes no sense on so many levels as to simply be annoying.

As a review, that works quite well for E.T. too..... :D

I still really want to see prometheus though. OOC, do the effects make it 'big-screen' worthy... or is this one to wait for on DVD?

I never really cared for Gone with the Wind myself...but that's just me.

I prefer "action" movies to the mushy lovestory movies (although I WILL watch and DO own quite a few GREAT tearjerkers!) and comedies aren't really my genre. But I also own quite a few great comedies too, so I don't rule out anything.

I've been slowly replacing my VHS collection, which numbers close to 4000 movies (although I still have a working VCR, it just plays crappy on the HD tv). Oh, and I still have a WORKING, portable black and white Zenith 15 inch tv I had won in a raffle when I was 11. My grandsons can't believe people used to watch tv like that LOL.

I saw the trailer for Prometheus, and I wasn't too sure it was a movie I wanted to see in the theatre. If you are into the 3-D movies, last summer we took my grandsons to see the movie "How to Train Your Dragon", have to say it was a nice family movie. I enjoyed it and it kept my attention. Another family movie I enjoyed was Soul Surfer, which is a true story.

Now, zombie movies...I guess I'm one of those who doesn't understand the concept of what the excitement is of watching them. Please don't hate me! LOL I've watched them, I just don't get it, they all seem the same to me! I liked the Matrix!, I like Blade!, I liked Underworld! I don't like all the Final Fantasy movies. I've watched Jeepers Creepers, all the Halloweens, Freddy Krugars, Chuckies, Saws,Ghost Ships, The Ring, I know I'm forgetting a lot! (I'm old and forget where I've put my brain most of the time!!!)

I liked most of the Stephen King movies, I'm very eclectic in my likes. But zombie movies, just seem like "when you have seen one, they all seem the same" type thing to me. Now, gaming is a different thing LOL but that's a different thread LMAO

Maybe i'm a harsh critic, but the only worthwhile aspect of the film was the effects so if you're going to see it see it on the big screen. The more i think about the film the worse it seems.

I was looking forward to seeing it. Now I'm feeling miserable. Just looked at the rating in rotten tomatoes and it's still high so I'm feeling less miserable now. Fingers crossed it's not as diabolical as you portray it. It can't be that bad can it?

I wasn't looking for another Alien - i do like Alien, but that's not really what i was looking for. I didn't realise it was a prequel - duh - and i wouldn't have minded, but there's real issues with the story making sense and the justifications for a lot of the characters behaviour (ie they seem to do things because the story needed them to do that rather than because they - or anyone else - would do what they've done). Visually it's unquestionably stunning, so if that's what you're looking for i'm sure you'll love it and i am sorry if i've spoiled any of it for you. Once you've seen it send me a PM and i'll elaborate on my problems with the film, but it'd be really hard to say any more without actually just giving away everything.

Anyway - Batman 3 was always the one that was going to amaze.

Feel much better now. So i'm thinking it might be along the lines of 2001 a space odyssey which had me disorientated towards the end (the time scene), but was still a great story and danny boyles SunShine that was a disapointment mixed with Solaris (1999) that was brilliantly done. Then I wont mind so much. Maybe i'm way off the mark with that thought but it'll make me feel better until I actually go and see this movie.

Do you read his books? If yes, do you think the movies live up to the books or are the movies good enough as presented?

The only good translation I've seen is Christine. Some of the other movies like The Stand or IT lose a lot because the viewer doesn't get the "inside the mind" effect that his books do.

Yes I've read all his books. What you say is very true, the movies would have to be 5 hours long LOL, to get the effects of his books. Stand by Me wasn't too bad, Rose Red, or The Perfect Storm. Pet Semetary was horrible,IMO! Sorry, I just woke up so I'm not at my best right now.

Stephen King has such intriguing detail in his books, movies should be done in two parters to give justice to them. When you have to cut out so much detail, it kills the effects of the storyline and it leaves the reader turner moviegoer sadly disappointed. It makes you feel like you are waiting for the punchline to the joke that will never come about...

I don't think ANY movie taken from a book actually lives up to the book, with the exception of the extended versions of LOTR. You only have so much time and a book has so much MORE detail. I always find I am sorely disappointed when I read the book FIRST then see the movie because I go in with an already pre-conceived concept of how the movie should play out, only too see how much detail has been left out.

When I have more time I'll add more too this, I have to go get ready for work...

When "Blade Runner" came out, on the short list of Ridley Scott's masterpiece list, I recall it was both commercial and critical flop. In fact, Roger Ebert reviewed it on "At the Movies" or whatever the name was when he was on it with Gene Siskel - he liked the visuals, but he gave the film a so-so rating.

Now I don't know about you, but I have seen almost every single film Scott has done, and he's a genius, IMO.

If he makes a film, I see it. Period. And if I like it, I like it.

so, yeah, I'm seeing Prometheus. :D

It may well work for you - i love SunShine so we clearly have different tastes. I would say that it's not the same sort of plot problems as 2001 though, it's not that it's confusing as in the complex, theological or defys the physical due to the powers involved, it's confusing as in basic time lines and motivations simply don't add up - there's actually a fairly comprehensive list on the Prometheus message board.

I found out afterwards that one of the Lost writers was involved, which explains a hell of a lot for me.

I watched a few newish / oldish movies in the last week or so...

Avatar - Had to watch this again on BluRay - Great Movie / Great Graphics..

John Carter - I liked the Plot and the Movie (I actually DIGG Fantasy Movies)

Another Earth - Good Storyline

Wrath of the Titans - Not Bad - Great CGI

Iron Sky - A bit of a flop in my personal opinion.

Journey 2 - The Mysterious Island - POOR, really bad acting.

I actually watch a truck load of movies every month... There are FEW that actually are good... Lots of them are a waste of money.

I have to agree with your last sentence Nate, Another Earth, what did you think of this, I thought it was a great movie.
Avatar is one of my favorites:) I've watched it loads of times with the kids (we have the dvd)

Journey 2 (what were they thinking:confused:) this movie won't get a second look.

John Carter actually surprised me, it was a really good watch, different with alot of imagination.

Journey 2 - This is what happens when the Rock and Vanessa Hudgens are your MAIN Cast - Overall it was absolutely pathectic - More for 4-5 year olds... Disney..

Another Earth was a good movie - I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see this 'Earth 2'. I suppose if they did that then they would need a HUGE budget for the CGI and the like. Still a relatively good storyline - Left me wondering WHAT her clone was doing back on Earth... Did he send her back so she couldn't ruin it? Or was it actually because she also won the competition on Earth 2?

I liked John Carter and the Princess - Pity she is slutty in every other movie (Angels Crest....) :p

Nate

Immortality was right. I have seen some pretty brutal movies but the Wind that Shakes the Barley was pretty raw and gritty. Cillian Murphy was an awesome standout. Couple that with the reality of the times and it was a good watch.

Highly recommend Love in the time Cholera. Great period drama set on the Caribbean Coast. A must for Javier Bardem fans.

I totally agree with Nate, I too watch lots and lots of movie each month as I'm not a tv fan. But the movies always seem to leave me waiting for something more to happen or leave me falling asleep midway through the movie.

Went to the movie store with my daughter the other day and only purchased 1 movie :( Nothing tickled my fancy, how sad LOL thousands of titles and I pick "Mommy Dearest" out of the bargain bin.

I have fell asleep a quarter way through some movies:p

Watched 'Life as we know it' the other night for the 3rd time, it's a good story line, really a shocker, love story but with a twist, great watch for guys and girls, it's not all lovey dovey, but it has some sad moments and funny moments, I rate this 9 out of 10.

With Much thanks to Imortality and harrys99 I have created a 'Movie Lovers' group for everyone.

It's an open group... so come one and come all.

In time I'd love to see it have loads of different genre areas... action, thriller, drama, bollywood.... go nuts.
