Many of us think how inconvenient it is to supply documentation to verify who we are. I now realise how important this process is. It is a process that can prevent fraudsters from stealing our money.

However, I feel the casinos should go one step further and request proof of identity before deposits can be made, not just when withdrawals are made.

A couple of weeks ago my credit card was used at BETFAIR - $3500 was taken from my account used at this site. I contacted Betfair and someone had set up an account using my name and credit card details. My home and email address were wrong.

I have to be honest I thought the home address would have to match the owner of the credit card for charges to be carried out.

I thought so too, guess we were both wrong:confused:

It seems the casino's concern is for THEMSELVES, and not US when their policy is to verify accounts ONLY when THEY are expected to pay out.

I am surprised this fraud worked, since whilst the thief would probably have been caught when they tried to withdraw, this did NOT stop the theft of the $3500 from the credit card account. Casinos probably leave it to the bank to check addresses, and if the bank doesn't, the charge goes through.

Betfair is not just a casino either, and other products offer the opportunity to move funds other than by withdrawal, a process that may NOT trigger any security requirements unless the fraudster was too "blatant" about what he was doing.

I agree

I totally agree with you on this one. I think that casinos should do a verification
before the first deposit to cover their clients. Security should go both ways.

-----Noli Illegitimi Carborundum (don't let the bastards get you down)-----

Bet365 (Playtech) does something I consider reasonable. They accept your first deposit, but you must wait for snail mail and enter verification to continue to deposit. Also you must enter your password every time you deposit or withdraw, not just to play the casino.

i think total verification should be implemented before you can spin a slot ,get a hand of cards dealt [for real money]

this business of waiting til you want a cash out :confused::confused:, thieves can go on a loosing streak as well as honest peeps

so why do they KEEP RIGHT ON accepting money from peeps that there suspicious of and the must be because no cash out till you prove your not

DO IT UP FRONT AND GET IT OVER WITH

I agree; I think the verifying should come first and in the long run it's convenient and secure for both the player and the casino:)

Then the problem becomes opening a new account at a casino and waiting at least 24 hours to have your identity verified before you can play. When people open new accounts at casinos they want to play now. Not later.

I think the casinos should be more diligent about credit cards though. I would think if a credit card is used to fund two different accounts a red flag should definitely go up. And I think you should have to be logged into the casino before making a deposit. At the same time I think the players should be vigilant about who's getting access to our credit cards and our passwords. It's everyone responsibility to fight fraud. People are always going to be looking for new ways to get into our bank accounts and credit cards but at the very least we should be locking the doors behind us and closing the curtains.

It might be a small price to pay for you but most people don't want to wait till tomorrow to play on a new account.

Sure it's always a good idea to get the docs away as soon as possible but waiting for approval to get to play is another story.

Maybe someone should start a poll. Who wants to wait for document approval before they can spin a reel?

Any site that would feel the need to call itself BetFair sounds like a place to avoid in the first place. Just like someone with "class" doesn't need to go around saying they've got it, and those that do, in all likelihood, don't..

Then the problem becomes opening a new account at a casino and waiting at least 24 hours to have your identity verified before you can play. When people open new accounts at casinos they want to play now. Not later.

I have scanned images of all my docs in a folder on my desktop with the ones requested by casinos most frequently already attached to a draft email I keep saved. Upon registering at a new site, I just go to my email draft, paste in the casino's email address listed for sending docs, type my account number/user name in the space I left in the subject field, add the casino's name or the name of the relevant casino department to the blank space after "Dear" in the salutation, and click "send". The email draft also address "faxbacks" and requests that I be emailed the form, if the casino requires it.

Sure it's always a good idea to get the docs away as soon as possible but waiting for approval to get to play is another story...

I vote: NO

Odd that, casinos say players can't POSSIBLY wait 24 hours to play on a new account, but CAN wait DAYS for a withdrawal, rather than have it available straight away to "deposit again in a casino".

Casinos that DO pay fast are PROOF that it can be done, it is the slow paying casinos that CHOOSE to pay slowly.

I think it's probably a lot easier for players to wait 24 hours for a withdrawal than it is to wait 24 hours to play.

what you say here is indicative of a gambling addict [sorry but it's true]

Well, that was just silly. [Sorry but it's true.]

People have a certain amount of free time away from their daily chores. This is the time they use for recreation. That is what gambling is supposed to be. Now personally if I have an hour that I can sit down in front of my computer and spin a few slots and for some reason or another want to try a new casino, I want to be able to create the account and play. When I feel like watching a new tv show I don't want to tell the television a day in advance.

With today's technology waiting 24 hours to register an account shouldn't be necessary anyway. If I want to register a credit card and use it at a casino I need very specific information to do so. And if this card has been used to fund a different account the casino software should know instantly. If I want to use Neteller and the Neteller account has been used to fund a different account the casino should know instantly.

Now if you're talking about someone stealing your credit card and opening an account at a casino you've never dealt with, well that's no different from stealing your credit card and using it to buy a new stereo. So unless you want Best Buy to make you wait 24 hours for a credit check everytime you use your Visa then telling the casinos to do so and not everyone else really doesn't make much sense.

Casinos make you fill out forms and perform credit checks upon first withdrawals to protect themselves from fraud. They might make statements like "For your safety" well, it's not. It's for their safety and I don't blame them. It's to keep people from stealing from them. Now it's just as much your responsibilty to keep people from stealing from you. Which means you don't give your account numbers or credit card information to businesses whether it be a casino or an electronics shop unless you know they're reputable and you cover the security numbers and passwords up when people are around who might want to take a peak.

Personally I only use a prepaid credit card online so I don't really care who gets the number off it. I only load it when I'm going to use it so if you steal the number you'd better have damn good timing and know when I'm on my way home after loading it. You don't have long.

One of the things that concerned me when I contacted Betfair about the fraudster opening an account and using my credit card details was the rep said "we make allowances for this happening - it is a loss that is covered by the casino".........so does this mean that in the long run we are paying for them to have a bit of fun at our expense?

Billing Address and Card Information

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Generally, proper fraud scrubbing would not allow such a transaction to occur. Your home address must match the billing address or the card is rejected. If the casino is smart and reputable, they would refund the money. You could threaten the casino that you will go to the credit card company and get your money back. Also, you could threaten the casino that you will notify your credit card company and Visa, if possible, the transaction was made with an uncoded merchant account. Lastly, you could contact your credit card issuer and explain your card information was stolen, file a police report, and request a refund. However, If you go this route, you will never be able to use that credit card again.

Good luck. In the future, maybe using an e-cash, or e-wallet product might be the best way to go. My payment offering is still development. I can assure you that this type of transaction will not occur within my company. :)

It took 2 hours between the time I loaded my NetSpend and when I got home and found that a thief had called in a balance inquiry on my account and then, using my log in info, impersonated me in transferring the funds from my NetSpend Visa to theirs! Do NOT use Western Union to load your prepaid debit card! Here's the thread!

I don't load my prepaid card at the drug store. I have a prepaid Titanium Mastercard which in Canada is loaded at Money Mart. Money Mart is just as safe as loading it at a bank. It can also be loaded as an online bill payment through my bank but there's about a 3 day wait if I do it that way.

Thanks Sam. In a way I was lucky that my bank picked up the unusual activity and froze my accounts. No probs getting the money back either.
