Feedback Link to a specific post in a long thread?

.

Each post in a thread has a number (your first post was #1. My post is #2 etc). Click on the number for the post you want to have a link to and the link will appear in your address bar :D

There is just one problem with those "perma-links" (I believe they are called that) - they don't take into account members having their forum settings on a different number of posts per page.

For example, a post I made yesterday: hxxp://www.casinomeister.com/forums/online-casinos/53125-new-slot-artic-treasure-adventure-stay-cool-3.html#post516306
The "3" means it is on page 3 of that thread... for me.
But I have my settings on 30 posts per page, so for anyone on the default setting of 10 posts per page my post (#63) will be on page 7 and so that link will not work.

But if I click on your post #5 here, the link shows #blahblahblahblah.html#post516347 so maybe the post number is stored in a different format to keep that kind of thing from happening...? I mean just because there's a 5 in the number doesn't necessarily mean that it's directly related to the post number, does it?

I'm just guessing, but you'd think that would have been something that was tested.

I had no idea that I could change that. I sent a link to a speciell post to someone yesterday and he believed I was sending a totally different post, wondering why I sent that one.
Then he probably have his settings differently then I;)

Yet if I use that as a link I get your post no problem, and I'm only 10 posts per page. I suspect the system resolves permalinks by looking at that post number at the end, using it to over-ride those page divisions. Just guessing, but it does (appear to) resolve them correctly so something like that must be happening. In other words I'm not seeing a problem here. If someone else tests it and does see a problem feel free to speak up. (I'm talking about using the permalinks as explained by rainmaker in post #2, if other methods are used results may deviate from what is expected.)

As to the counter itself, yes I believe the database is just numbering them as they are posted regardless of the thread in which they appear. IOW it's a running counter for the whole message board and (I seem to remember) can be used alone to locate and identify a specific post. Back in the day when I was managing the WOL forums I seem to remember using those post numbers alone, accessing individual posts directly in the DB using that ID number.
