American comedy star thinks UIGEA is "misguided."
Cleverly using the title of poker's most famous game, U.S. comedian Drew Carey has defended the popular pastime in a video blog piece titled "Texas Close 'Em" in which be brands the Unlawful Internet Gambing Enforcement Act "misguided."
The attack by the comedian, well known for his prime-time TV series The Drew Carey Show and as the host of The Price is Right, is carried in Carey's Reason.tv blog
In the video blog he takes aim at the U.S. government for its SWAT-style raid earlier this year at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1837 in Dallas.
"Poker is about as American as baseball and apple pie," Carey said. "It was born here in America. Mark Twain loved it. He's a great American. Until recently, Supreme Court justices had a monthly game. They're great Americans. You'd think playing poker in the VFW hall would be about as American as anything you can do."
Explaining that the raid is part of a broader plan to shut down poker even in low-stakes games benefiting charity, Carey went on to elicit from the veterans that all the proceeds from the weekly poker game went to maintaining the VFW hall or to other charitable causes. The hall has now had to close for lack of funds.
