I'm currently listening to...

On this day, 34 years ago. What a way to start what was their last ever appearance at Wembley together.

Been a while since ive visited one of my favourite threads on CM and what a song it took me to.

Love this song. My Dad was a big fan of Queen and me too, i like their 'A Kind Of Magic' album, around the time Highlander was out which brings me to this.....

Well I had to listen to that song Dino posted. There's always a chance it's a mod post in disguise :p
i only hide mod links to goaties' porn site, all good :)

Ye.

I might be thrown into the frog pits for this, but The Cure and Queen are two bands which I've never been that fond of.

I'm very sorry.

I would say you deserve eternal damnation in hell for that, but that would be akin to handing you a wad of £50 notes

Got to agree with you on Queen - very over rated to my mind. Freddy Mercury was a good singer, but no better than thousands of others around today. Trouble is that after Bohemian Rhapsody every mainstream pop fan believed they were rock gods !

As a perfect example Radio Gaga Gaga is one of the biggest pieces of musical excrement every produced.

Freddy Mercury wasn't renowned for his singing acumen, he was revered for being a great frontman and probably greatest showman ever. Hence why he influenced just about every artist since with his flamboyant pomp

Great frontman, yes, for sure. Delivered a good show, yes.

Queen as a band and their songs? I guess they're ok, I mean I don't feel a sudden urge to vomit if I hear a Queen song.

For me, Queen belongs to the same club as bands/artists like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and Prince to name a few.

I like music that makes me happy. As evidenced by this thread. I dare you to find a song I've posted which doesn't make you smile, dance or just feel overjoyed in general :p

I'm about the music and the lyrics, for me a song has to have some meaning

Compare these two, anyone who produces lyrics like that second pile of tosh, which looks like it was written by a toddler, deserves to fired out of a cannon without a crash helmet (apologies to Queen fans):

Staind

Schizophrenic conversations that
I'm always having with myself.
I hear these voices in my head competing.
Maybe I could use a little help
I still have schizophrenic conversations
When there's no one else around to hear.
I long for solitude and peace within me
Void of all the anger and the fear.

Queen

I don't think it's meant to be highbrow, and it's a pointless example

Music appeals in different ways to different people, sometimes it's the lyrics, sometimes a melody, a beat or a hook

I mean I could just as easily recognize Bob Dylan as lyrical wordsmith genius that affected an entire generation, I could also say he can't sing, can't pen a melody to save his life & that 'listening' to this man's spoken-word 'music' makes me want to put myself into an induced coma

I might be the opposite in this regard. The most important part of any song for me is the feel of it. I don't need to know the lyrics most of the times (some of my absolute favourites sing in languages I yet don't understand).

I just need a certain harmony, a clever hook or a sick breakdown to get me going. Or a vocalist who's voice I like.

I'm a simple man. Give a cold beer and a banger of a song and I'm happy. And play your music live. I don't care how great a band/artist is, if you don't feel like touring, have fun jerking your instruments in the studio. Even mediocre live music is better than a guitar god mentally masturbating his instrument (in a studio) through the most hard to play song ever.

Equally valid point and I agree - It's just an explanation of why Queen don't actually do it for me, all forms of music are good, and all appeal to different people, I'm not knocking Queen, their music has brought pleasure to millions, they just aren't for me.

Yep and if you want to go on stage and mime to a backing track prepare for a bottle of warm yellow liquid in the head :-). Live music is just that, not someone doing somersaults on a stage and dancing like Fred Astaire, whilst not getting out of breath, and producing a perfect replica of a studio track.

Just to clarify, I'm no Queen fanboy that prances around my living room in hotpants & a hoover. I merely acknowledge Freddy Mercury's and Queen's stratospheric influence on other artists

I do like a few of their 'bops' just like the next man. Don't stop me now, that's a pretty catchy little number

I do that. Not while Queen is playing though. But some bands have that effect on me. And to my defence: I only act like this when drunk (which is hardly ever).

(Don't tell anyone, it's kind of embarrassing)

It's a little sad and

I mean sometimes - rarely - there'll be artists that 'tick all the boxes'

I listened through that masterpiece. Really waiting and hoping for the "tick all the boxes" part to reveal itself.

I failed.

But that just proves your earlier point, doesn't it?

Bob Dylan is utter dog shite
