How secure are secure deposits?

Got a text today from my banks anti-fraud department, telling me that a suspicious transaction had taken place at 2.01 this afternoon, a payment to Neteller and the bank wanted to know if I had made the payment. I hadnt, so they phoned me and went through the last half dozen transactions, all of which were ok, apart from the Neteller one. So they have cancelled my card, and will send me the new one, but I am extremely concerned as the only transactions on this card are payments to online casinos. This has made me doubt whether the whole process is as secure as it should be when I deposit, and I am wondering if anyone else on CM has had any issues lately? I had one non casino transaction on the card, and it was for a hotel and the card didnt leave me while I was making the transaction, so I dont think my information was taken from that transaction.

Your details are sadly always at risk no matter what sites might claim about "100%" secure.

A TON of gambling sites have been hacked over the years and peoples personal details stolen. Some of them admit to it and some of them do not. Here is one high profile one where it didn't come out for 18 months

You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

Of course hackers do not always target gambling sites. Sony is another high profile victim.

It should be ok most of the time I think, as long as you use different passwords everywhere (I play at 3-4 casinos and have different pwd everyone) , always cancel skrill 1-tap if its forced on you by your site and don't ever let your cvc code be stored.

Also : Check your card transactions and credit reports carefully.

** Touch Wood ** I've been playing online since 2003 using various deposit methods (Visa Card, Paypal, Ukash etc) and *whispers* never had a problem.

Got one Halifax Security phone call in that time (some mad reason I deposited at a Rival casino and they wanted to check up)

I do think things are pretty secure but will never be 100% as some morons out there are always working on new ways to rip off the public.

I should also add that the card only became valid in July, and since then I have had to send card details to 5 sites as I had to update the depositing card info.

This probably explains why I cannot make one single deposit to my neteller without my bank declining it, blocking my debit card and calling me in seconds...

I have to say I am happy that the transaction was declined to Neteller and hats off to Halifax for looking after their customers in this way, though I am sure its a PITA for you to have them declined when they are genuine transactions.

It really is..

Everytime I end up talking to these 18 year old girls from liverpool asking me... 'what is neteller' 'is it like western union'

I guess it will be useful if one day it isn't me :p

LOL I guess you bank with Barclays? I was brought up in Liverpool and also bank with Barclays - it's a reminder of home for me :)

NatWest were driving me nuts with that. Complained, ended up with £50 compensation twice then they white listed the card.

I only use that account for online deposits so just transfer in from main account when making a deposit. No better way to make card fraud irrelevant than to not keep money in the account for any length of time.

I have just sent a complaint to both accounts after seeing this. Lets see how it goes :)

When you 'sent' the new details to the 5 sites did you do so by email by any chance?

You need to make sure you're dealing with the fraud complaints team. They're the ones who can help.

Mind you, it was happening more or less weekly for me for months.

Hope it goes OK and definitely consider setting up a free basic account for your casino related expenditure.
