I am going on unemployment soon. My question is this...

What if i play a free tourney, win, and am able to cash out a nice sum? When the winnings go back into my checking account will unemployment see it and question it?

I know most people won't know the answer to this but maybe someone will have a thought?

Thanks

I'm not a lawyer, yadda, yadda, yadda...

But, I seriously doubt that the unemployment office needs to know your checking account information for anything other than to know where the money goes when they send it to you. I kinda doubt that they'll be checking everyone's balances on a weekly basis..:)

I agree with Win as I know some 1 that got SSI an refinanced their house an they had like 25K extra in there an nothing happened they still got their SSI an all that junk

Good Luck on winning a Biggie:D

To me, that would be a GREAT problem to have.
SOLUTION..When you hit the Big One, email me and I'll give you my Bank Acc't # to deposit in, and that will relieve you of the worry, and all you have to do then is collect your unemployment check, and ALL WILL BE WELL!!!! LOL......
Just kidding of course, but I truely wouldn't worry about it until it happens. It's not really that big a thing, and besides if you were to hit a BIG ONE(and I hope you do), if they did find out they would probably just require you to pay it back.
I'd rather see you win first, then we'll figure it out from there.....GOOD LUCK

what is a nice sum?
banks are required to report $10k to the irs. I know this as a bank rep told me this first hand. However, I heard it was now 4k due to 9/11 but never verified it, perhaps that is why the casinos limit withdrawal amounts, just a thought.

It is doubtful unemployment will see it or even care.

To give you hope, in 2003 and 2004 I won $10k off a scratch ticket. Both times it was in the month of July and both times it was with the last unemployment check. Both times in the same store.

Don't forget, bills first, gambling second. :)

have you went back to that store in July an bought yourself a few more tickets??? sounds like that store was lucky for you

Im not sure what the requirements are in the usa for applicants on unemployment or social assistance. I do know however here in toronto that when the govt issues any cheques for unemployment or social assistance you are required to provide them every 3 months a copy of your bank statements.
If there was a deposited that added up to more then 20% of what your allowed per month then the following month they deduct that from your cheque. Maybe best having it held in moneybookers or c2play also click 2 play has their own debit card that you can add funds or withdraw at a local bank.

When you win(I hope) get a wired plastic and withdraw to that via wire transfer, then the gov. will never know what you are up to.

I did but never really won anything big like that. I don't buy too many tickets these days.

I had unemployment and they don't care about that stuff. The only thing they will want to know if you are getting severance pay. Unemployment do not really know what goes on in your checking account as I have gambled some of it myself. I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Why don't you just ask them before the fact? Say "Sometimes I go to a casino or bingo. If I win some money, would I need to declare it?" Don't mention online at all.

Think the wired plastic is a good idea for all US online gamblers.

Here in Canada, you only need to declare EMPLOYMENT earnings while receiving unemployment. Not sure gambling is considered employment
