Help! Serious Internet problem!

Vista w/IE7 with all updates. I cannot connect to Quicktender www.quicktender.com or pages like this one

I get the white web page cannot be displayed thing. I CAN connect to Paypal, and to other https sites.

I can't connect to Quicktender even within the casino software.

I've cleaned all cookies, history, temp files, rebooted. I've run a virus/malware scan. Ipowered off my DSL modem and rebooted and powered it back on. I've turned off Norton 360 (piece of $hit) and tried typing in those pages. I've done hand stands and whistled Dixie with a mouthfull of saltine crackers... and I still can't connect to the above pages. I have not installed any software. The only thing that happens is Norton's updates every day and a couple of Windows Defender updates.

I DO have one hell of a headache.

Oh. And MG casinos that I haven't already downloaded the new games on, can't get 'em. The download applet pops up. I click download, and it just sits there, shows no progress in the little progress bar.

I'm thinking Vista's Windows Defender is yanking a knot in my tail, and I ain't happy. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm tearing my hair out here...

Good idea. On my way.... Wonder if it will import my Favs from IE? Never mind... here I go...

Thanks! And ((hugs)) haven't seen you in a while.

Edit: Downloaded, installed Firefox2. And I get this....

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.quicktender.com.

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Firefox can connect to web, because here I am. ... So what is this telling me... It's got to be the DSL or a general sort of internet problem with DNS?

**heavy sigh** Definitely more than just a browser problem.

Tried the links from hubby's computer (XP sp2, IE7) and get the same thing.

I hate computers.

************

Spent the last hour on the phone w/DSL support. Thank goodness, someone else just phoned in with the same problem. So the problem is out there somewhere and not on my computers. Can't connect to anything overseas. You guys put a wall up? wouldn't blame you. LOL

An evening of play is shot to hell. Oh well. Probably saved me some dough.

Thanks for the firefox tip, T_B. I think I'm keeping it for awhile.

I don't know if it's related to your issues but Norton products hosed a lot of people's computers this week with one of their updates. See this article

Good Luck!

Thanks bb... Yeah, Norton's is a pain. What was once very good software went to heck in a handbasket when they were bought out. I keep using it out of habit. At least I don't use the Cybersitter software that Norton's hosed this week.

You are welcome. I used to use Norton also until it got so bloated and buggy. I had to call Microsoft once because of a false virus alert via Norton. It automatically deleted a very important windows file. The call to MS was NOT free either. :(
I started using some of the free programs a couple of years ago that are out there....firewall, antivirus, spyware protection and I've found them to be a lot less hassle and a lot cheaper!

Any recommendations you can share with us? I too would like to make Norton a memory, and would if I knew of a tried and true alternative.

Hi Maxd and welcome to Casinomeister! Your presense here is much appreciated.
(I'm a little late in in my welcome.)

About those Free programs....I'm providing the links because sometimes it's a little hard to find the free versions. ;)
Firewall - Zone Alarm

Lots of people are happy with the firewall that comes built into WinXP or Vista. If this is your choice, you just need to be aware that the WinXP firewall will notify you of the programs that are asking for outgoing access but there isn't any notification for incoming. It seems as if I remember reading somewhere that the Vista firewall is more configurable that XP.
I like my Zone Alarm!

Antivirus - AVG

I'm using this on my main machine. No problems other than the free version is not as configurable as the paid one, but it's definitely something I can live with.
AVAST

I have this on my laptop, no issues nor complaints.
Anyone who decides to download one of these please know that you need to uninstall any other antivirus products that you may have on your machine. Two antivirus products on one machine do not play nice together. Also keep in mind that if you don't have the latest updates, you are not protected.

Spyware protection - Spybot

Highly recommended by security experts.

Here is another caution about spyware protection products. Be extremely careful about clicking on ads or even Google searches for free products, some of these links are spyware themselves, even though they advertise themselves as preventive programs.

If anyone is interested in a good read on security for your computer, I highly recommend this link.

There is tons of good security info for anyone.
One more thing....if anyone would like a link to a place where there is FREE help if you feel that your machine has been compromised, please PM me and I'll provide the link.
Be safe out there! :)

I have setup our entire office and all the laptops in our office with Trend Micro PC-cillin and Computer Associates (CA) on all my home ones. They are both excellent. I uninstalled Norton 3 years ago due to many , many bad things it was doing to our networked computers....it sucks up most of the computer resources which slows it down...

They both have a 30 day free trial period. Either one will do. Just need to know which one you prefer..they both work just a tad differently, is the reason for the two different installs . One for office and one for home.

I have been playing with Vista..another bad move on Microsofts part...if you don't have a minimum of 2 gigs for memory ..you will be SOL..Vista sucks up at least a full gig if not more just to run..I sent my new laptop back after trying it for 3 days with all the bells and whistles ....got the blue screen too many times for my taste...not a very good OS at all just yet. Still isn't compatable with very many software or peripherals either. Went back to XP professional OS for my new laptop.

Hope this helps!

My personal favorite is Eset's Nod32 Antivirus and Firewall . I dont know if it's free or not ( maybe a trial version ? ) but it is considered the best and most reliable amoung alot of professional techs in the business. I too once used Norton and even a couple of the one's mentioned above but find Nod32 to be the lest of a memory hog and best in all around performance. I dont remember how much i paid for it (it wasnt very much compared to other simular products out there), but after trying it just a few days, I went ahead and purchased it and havent looked back yet!

I highly recommend it!

Either way, a GOOD Antivirus program is essential in todays internet world!

I too am running Vista and agree it is a POS.... however , I have 'gotten used to it now and actually find it does have some good points (it's too early in am for me to remember just what right now tho :) )

I hope you find a happy solution to your search

Eset's Nod32 Antivirus and Firewall
Tried it and it worked great for one of the laptops but it didn't fill the bill for what we needed as a whole so we went with the other 2. ;)

AVG a good free anti-virus. I used it for years, until we went to a custom program. Never in years of surfing sites with AVG did I ever have a problem with a virus (it's not good for spyware though).

As of this afternoon, I am able to reach all the sites that had DNS problems last night. Guess everythings okey dokey (until I get ready to play again  ). At least it wasn't my PC.

You're right Lots0 AVG is one of the best if not the best anti-virus programs I have found, been using it for 3 years now and have never had a problem. AVG also has another free program to use for spyware, its called "AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5" also a great free program...never had a problem with it either.
