Good Morning....

First time posting here. Just wanted to say hello & ask a question. WHERE IS THAT MISSING AIRPLANE ?
D'oh - easy question!
It's at the bottom of the ocean.

I must admit though, before this incident I always assumed that Air Traffic Control alway knew exactly where any plane in the air was. I was totally gob-smacked to find, that in the 21st century, they DON'T have this information!

I did read somewhere (this was a couple of weeks back) that its possibly somewhere in the Indian Ocean and the plane was out of radar range so that is why it couldn't be tracked after a certain point. The Indian Ocean is vast and pretty remote so its not inconceivable to think that it was where any radar could pick it up.

Welcome to the forum :)

But on the subject of that plane I find it incredible that we still use a "black box" . The technology that is now available and the sheer amount of satellites in orbit (around 3000) means everything that happens on a plane could be recorded in real time elsewhere.

That did make me think too but the black box (there are two one data and one voice recorder) records stuff as it happens in the plane and a satellite wouldn't be able to pick up that much data. Also considering the sheer volumes of planes I would think it nearly impossible to keep track of every single one for the whole journey unless they were actually looking for it. I think I watch far too much Air Accident Investigation on National Geographic... Help...
