The new law passed because members of the pro-family movement -- including a great many Southern Baptists -- brought the issue to the attention of both Democrats and Republicans.

Internet gambling has grown out of control...This hurts families. Although Internet gambling did not have a prominent place on either party’s radar screen just a few years ago, its explosive growth and potential for damaging families made it a very important issue to me and many others in Congress.

So there you go...it's not about the money after all!! Actually I feel slightly sorry for the Baptists in that they are being used to cover up the real reasons this Bill passed. On the other hand...!

And credit goes to someone at CAP for finding this gem list if contributors to Frist's campaign albeit from a while back. No surprise to see Harrah's on there then!

This is outragous when you think about it. Here we are in the 21st century and politicians can still be bought for cash. Unreal.

Someone just pointed out that this is a guy who puts forward legislation on the grounds that gambling is immoral, and yet was quite happy to accept a $19,000 "fund contribution" from Harrahs!!

Actually that opensecrets site (link above) is a mine of interesting info on politicians. Even published funds, personal finances...allsorts. Coule be useful to someone digging deep ;)

What about those who have NO family to support, who are perhaps to ill to enjoy the wholesome activities that many are able to enjoy, and who certainly could not stand the trip to a B&M casino.
If Internet gambling damages families, so does gambling on the HORSES, that was not banned! Fortunes are lost at B & M casinos too, I am sure many families are damaged where the breadwinner is close enough to B & M casinos to make them pretty much as accessible as the online variety.

The UK stance is not without its critics either, and the worry of damage to individuals and their families has been raised. As a result, only ONE B & M supercasino is now going to be allowed on a trial basis, and the online variety are to be required to look out for problem players. The approach has been regulation, banning it would have ensured it remained outside the control of regulation. Bringing in this regime will enable casinos to apply to be regulated in the UK, which will give them more credibility over those regulated by more forgiving countries as most currently are.
