Facebook Launches Real Money Online Gambling

A new era of social gaming was ushered in on Tuesday as Facebook launched the first real money game on its ubiquitous social networking platform. ...

I have spoke out against this before, I don't think facebook should be offering gambling games of any sort for play money, (the goal is real money eventually, so they can make money, of course) since they do not have the proper protocols in place to verify age.

It is irresponsible and I think it has the potential to cause harm to young at risk teens and preteens.

GAMESYS RELEASES MORE DETAIL ON FACEBOOK REAL MONEY GAMBLING (Update)

Age verification just one of several precautionary facets

Gamesys has given more details on its real money bingo and slots partnership in the UK with Facebook, explaining that the new app is available only to users in the UK, and that age-verification technology is used to ensure under-18s and vulnerable people will not be able to access the game.

The company is well-experienced, and also operates Sun Bingo, Heart Bingo and Jackpotjoy.com.

A spokesman explained that the app’s signup is separate from Facebook’s and new users are required to enter email and physical address details rather than logging in straight from their Facebook accounts. Activity from Bingo Friendzy will appear on timelines and posts, but will be restricted from appearing on the feeds of under-18s and non-UK residents, he said.

The London-based company, which is licensed and regulated by the government of Gibraltar, has also confirmed that users will have access to self-help tools to reduce the risk of gambling addiction, including the ability to set spending limits.

A Facebook spokesperson has confirmed the game was developed independently by Gamesys and had no official involvement from the social networking site.

Despite it being customary for Facebook to take a 30 percent cut of transactions on the network it has not confirmed if this was the case with Bingo Friendzy, claiming it was “commercially sensitive information.”

Facebook added that the decision to launch a real-cash gambling app in the UK had been motivated by “"a mature and very well-regulated gambling market" and confirmed that its gaming partner, Zynga, also has plans for real-money gambling versions of its games to follow next year.

Slight derail...

I recently logged into my world winner account to play a few of the free games and was kind of shocked that on the log in page it now states that players must be a minimum 13 yrs of age. I understand these are considered to be skill games, but where does a 13 year old get money to pay to play??? Was this always there and I just didn't notice it before?

There are a few games I play on facebook which now have money tournaments advertised. I haven't attempted to try them since I am currently unemployed and not really that good at them:D A few of the games, my grandsons' friends play a lot (these are kids between the ages of 13-15), are being offered by King . com and these aren't even considered casinotype games. Maybe the same rules apply as stated in the article jetset provided?
