Drug trafficker's curfew cut for bingo
WINNIPEG - A city woman facing sentencing on serious drug charges has had her court-ordered curfew varied so she can play bingo.
Rita Parenteau has pleaded guilty to one count of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of morphine.
On Tuesday, defence lawyer Darren Sawchuk asked Justice Rick Saull extend her curfew to 10:30 p.m., one night a week, but did not tell court why. And Saull didn't ask, noting the Crown wasn't opposing the variation.
"I won't delve into it," Saull said. "I'm sure you'll fill me in when it comes to sentencing."
Sawchuk and Parenteau discussed what night she wanted to play bingo prior to the opening of court. Her curfew was extended on the night she selected.
Parenteau has spent two years under a strict curfew and hasn't breached it once, Sawchuk said outside court. She requested the bail variation so she could spend more "social time" with her family.
