I've used social bookmarking in my arsenal of link acquisition for years with success.

My advice was to knock out a 'supplemental' or 'indented' secondary listing that your competition has when they search for your keyword - especially if you are in the top 20. One extra position equates into sometimes double the traffic. In the top 10 in this (poker) market one position could mean tens of thousands.

Over time I have gotten more flack from people that never believed it could work - over and over and over again.

As was the case recently.

So i decided when I saw the criticism, I was going to go out and immediately start yet another test to prove how strong a technique it was, but I never expected this...

I performed this search "poker" in the default Google (no regional or language filters) and since I am still in Amsterdam it searched from my Netherlands based IP at my hotel. Here are the results;

Expired Image

Notice PokerListings.nl's position - #9, and notice the two listings above it; nl.pokernews.com - with 2 listings. Notice what the URL and search term is.

I ran this at 10 AM GMT on the 4th, just after being doubted yet again

And this morning at 6AM, less than 24 hrs, here are the results;

Not only has the indentation been removed, earning one better position for the target site, but the rank was improved placing them ABOVE them as well.

I'd like to think that I don't need to prove myself each time I get questioned, but I guess we need to question the claims made by many SEO's since so many of them are another author's repurposed statements.

I test everything because you never know what your getting - especially from the likes of Google.

If anyone else gives this a go please publish your results. We don't need to see screenshots and URL's, although you could use a random one like I did.

One more thing...the last time I ran this strategy the ranking increase on Google lasted around 30 days and Yahoo and MSN lasted 45 days.

Give it a go!! (but definitely DO NOT abuse this. The SBM sites will ban you and it may run a red flag at Google if abused)

Funny, when I run a google search for [poker] the site your talking about "PokerListings.nl" is NOT in the first three pages... Almost like it got penalized for spammin...

Would you do this social bookmarking if there were no search engines?
I doubt it and that by definition makes it spam and we all know how bad google hates spam.

No screen shots here. Do the search yourself so you can see the results first hand..

BTW- Gary your screen shots seem to cut off all the info required to verify your claims. Would you be so kind as put up the entire screen shot so we can see the important info like the query and page number, thanks.

Added... Almost every search engine spam trick will work for a short time... till they catch you, then your site has to live with the penalty's that google will impose (usually a google penalty is the end of a site making any money). It is really not worth risking getting your site penalized using these kind of methods.

And in the gambling arena... the sites that stay on top of the google search listings over time are as clean of spam as the driven snow... Think about it.

Grab those straws Lots0 - I think we both know the truth.

Had you read and realised I did it from the Netherlands and that's where I conducted the test (as I pointed out) you may get a different result.

I'll say this once more - I don't post until I test.

Try searching google.nl - which I mentioned in the post - is where I was located.
You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

I hold many of the top spots in the gaming arena. I test in it every day. You're not going to find any holes here.

If you prefer to spend your time trying to find loopholes in "my claims", why not run the test yourself.

I though you weren't in the mood to "pick a fight"?

It's me that has no time for you.

you are still cropping your images so that it is impossible to verify your claims from your screen shots.

You know there are Proxies... Even in the Netherlands.

So I guess what your saying is that spamming works... And your going to tell everyone how to do it...

We all know spamming works for a short period of time. It is the long run that most folks are worried about.

Why risk having your site penalized... just to kick someones indented listing out of google? Or have your site banned just so you can enjoy a page one listing for a short time? Why leave a black mark on the domain name (google says your part of a 'bad neighborhood') Unless your using throwaway domains... and that is heavy duty spamming bro...

What your telling folks is wrong.
You want newbees to think spamming is OK, it's not and when you get caught (and you will get caught) your domain aint worth crap.

Gary... I been testing SEO since 1995 Back in the old Alta Vista days... Your not the only one that tests... Besides the test results are only as good as the person doing the tests.

I say this again...The gambling sites that stay on top of the google listings over time are as free from spam as the driven snow.

Dropping spam gambling links all over is bad for the industry. It makes us all look bad and gives us all a bad name and we really don't need anymore of that.

Are you even reading the posts? They are to knock a competitors 'kicker' listing out and gain a position by means of doing SBMing to a non-competitor below the higher ranking site. The fact that it increased the rankings was a fluke. The technique does not include your website at all.

Apparently we are not in the same industry because in gaming its dog-eat-dog and being nice doesn't work. You're taking a knife to a gun fight.

We don't need bad links to give people in the gaming industry a bad name, being in it does that.

If you test then how about sharing? You seem to be hell-bent on stirring things up - and I'm guessing but I'm sure its not the first or the last time.

I never have been accused of being nice before, usually it's the opposite. This has nothing to do with being 'nice' it has everything to do with making money.

Really? There are a LOT of good and honest people in this business, that have reputations above reproach. Unfortunately there are also a lot that think like you do, one reason they think like you is simply because of spamming... What your advocating.

If you test then how about sharing?
No thanks, I spend time and money testing. I am not about to 'share' for free.

You seem to be hell-bent on stirring things up - and I'm guessing but I'm sure its not the first or the last time.
Nope, actually this was the last thing I wanted.
But with the really bad free advice floating around I thought there should be a counter point.

Of course I could just cop an attitude like yours... you know Dog eat dog.
And go along with you and tell all the newbees to put up all these spam links so they will get penalized... you know less competition... Dog eat dog...

BTW - I really got a laugh when I read where you told people how to drop spam links and then told them not to abuse it...

Will do Bryan - but one last thing Lots0 - What I say to do is build social bookmarks to a non-competitor to bump the indented listing of a competitor ranking above you.

I don't know where you're getting dropping spam links from.

You really don't see this as SPAM? You gotta be kidding.

Your creating phony links and pointing them toward a site (not yours) to manipulate the SERP.

This is just another form of keyword dilution... a very bad type of blackhat SEO that most all sites in this business that hold good rank have to constantly battle against.

I wish you guys would take a little bit of that energy you are expending here and help me get some better SEO for my Blogsite...:D:notworthy

help me get some better SEO for my Blogsite

If you must use blogspot (google blogger) then assign your own domain.

Although black hatters get decent results using blogspot sub domains (till they're penalised), your not doing yourself any favours by using one.

Some free tips:
Don't use a *.blogspot.com sub domain
Stick to good content and information.
Writing 2 decent paragraphs is better than 5 that are full of garbage.
Don't keyword stuff.
Post a new blog at least 3 times a week. (Though I aim at a min of 1 a day).
Be mindful about the amount and promotional material you push on site.
Relevant textual content phrases are great anchor links. Use these (in moderation) to point to you web page(s) content on same topic (if you have it).

Follow these suggestion and you'll notice an improvement in your SERPS :)

Cheers

Robwin,

If you have a website and a blog have you considered using Google Gears and migrating the content over to a wordpress blog on you r website?

I migrated ppc-managers.blogspot.com over to garythescubaguy.com in a matter of minutes.

I'd look at PR, age and other things to determine if this is a good move for you.

I'd avoid wordpress...

It's full of hacker exploits.

Here is a list of good blog software from wikipedia
# Apache Roller (Java-based)
# b2evolution (PHP/MySQL)
# blosxom (Perl)
# DotNetNuke (VB.NET/ASP.NET)
# Drupal (PHP)
# Frog CMS (PHP)
# Elgg (PHP)
# Habari (PHP)
# Jaws (PHP)
# Joomla (PHP)
# Livejournal (Perl) (Also available, developer hosted)
# LifeType (PHP)
# Movable Type (Perl)
# Nucleus CMS (PHP)
# Serendipity (PHP)
# Slash (Perl)
# Subtext (C#/ASP.NET)
# Textpattern (PHP)
# Typo (Ruby on Rails)

I would recommend, Drupal, Joomla and/or Movable Type

Should I mention that Senior members and above (this includes Webmeisters) can have their own blog here are Casinomeister? :p

Or do these count?

It depends on what you mean by 'count'...:)

To the members of Casinomeister they 'count' a lot.. :notworthy

However, looking just at SEO and search engine position in google... They count... just not a whole bunch.

Google has decided some time ago that in 'most cases' a blog is not "important"(according to google) unless it sits on it's own domain(or one of their's).

Notice that I am being very general. There are always exceptions, a couple of good links from a site that google trusts and just about any page or site can rank well in google.

Should I mention that Senior members and above (this includes Webmeisters) can have their own blog here are Casinomeister? :p
