Deposit Limit vs No Limit

Bit of a strange one this, but my thoughts are stirring on this subject!

Historically I have played with deposit limits. Some months increased to a larger limit, some months reduced if I have lost a fair bit. Here lies my thoughts!

The deposit limits I have put in place are basically what I am prepared to lose, therefore I start playing under the thought of thinking it is ok to lose this amount. Obviously if a large win came in, then I would be prompted to withdraw, but if say I won 10x deposit amount and then lost it, my mind would only think 'what the heck, it was only a £30 deposit lost' instead of thinking I just lost £300.

Of late, I have removed my limits and yes, I can be prone to mad sessions and being silly, but on the whole I am more respectful of what I can lose. This weekend was fruitful with £610 deposited and £2,000 withdrawn over different sessions at different establishments. I ended up depositing more knowing a previous withdrawal was being processed and would cover it.

Mentally here lies the difference with me:

- With deposit limits = ok to lose this amount and eagerness in waiting for deposit limits to be refreshed and quicker to log in to play.

- Without limits = No rush to log in as no anticipation of when limits are refreshed and more mindful of not playing to lose.

I hold my hands up to having sessions of going on tilt if going badly, so yes, deposit limits are essential here, but on the whole I show more respect to playing without limits.

What's everyone else's thoughts on this? Naturally everyone has different financial positions (of which mine isn't great, but has seriously improved!).

It's very much a personal thing I guess. But speaking from personal experience deposit limits have saved me from going on mega tilt a few times. Many a time I've gone into the tilt tank and deposited and deposited and cursed myself for not setting a deposit limit.

On balance I think deposit limits should be used by anyone who is even remotely capable of tilting (the majority of us I guess).

True. Also I find that after a big win and a few withdrawals I tend to play more under the belief I have available funds, so normally wise to set deposit limits after a win to restrict play and save some cash for other things!

Actually funnty this has been brought up, I've recently grown tired of the freestyle deposits I've been making and have vowed to enforece very strict deposit limits.

I used to deposit 'as and when' but having grown tired of this merry dance and never seeing extended winning streaks, I just find the whole routine to predictable (in a bad way) to keep at it every day.

You'll get one or two great days, and recoil in horror as you fritter away your winnings attempting to repeat the trick. I'm not one for depositing £30 and withdrawing eg £60, so it's generally go hard or go home.

Yet, I've gone what eight days without micro-chasing, and it feels great. It's monthly from now on, and the funny thing is the longer you abstain the easier it gets!

Deposit limits all the way, but not through actual limits set at the casinos but willpower

It might seem an odd thing to say but winning big can also put you on tilt. In fact thinking about it....there aren't many gambling scenarios that don't end up tilting me so perhaps I'm a bad case in point :)

With the exception of Play OLG (my government run casino), that only allows me to deposit directly from my bank account, or from a credit card I do not have, it's my method of deposit that limits mine.

I use a reloadable prepaid card, and it requires about 48 hours via bank transfer, or physically going and putting cash on the card.

I know others that only use disposable cards or a pre-paid voucher.

There are so many casinos, limiting your deposits at one doesn't necessarily translate to limiting it to all.

I won a bit of money last week paid back to my card, small enough I was considering it money to play with.

Found my self awfully annoyed to have to spend it on something else in my real life.

I try very hard to stick to a budget, and physio and cabs are weekly ongoing expenses I did not budget for.

I don't like it much, but the gambling budget is an easier place to find $100 bucks today. And then 80 for the next few weeks.

But I don't need to adjust any deposit limits, there is just not the entertainment to spend I was expecting. I have a trip coming up, I was already backing off, and that win I thought would provide more gambling, and instead I gotta spend it on real life practical stuff I did not budget for.

Rambling a bit, but I do think limiting at your source rather than at an individual casino level might be the best choice.

Good thread! These days meaning the past 3 years plying my degenerate vice I live and die by my DL. Without them I would be doomed. As I have zero control and go into instant Tilt without a safety net. It took me years to master to the "art" of responsible gambling. In the past going back 2007 / 2008 I would gamble like a maniac. Stopped a while but love the game so much had to find another way in. Then as the industry finally woke up to the need for proper "tools" to assist degenerates like me ... and I saw the light!

These days I NEVER play anywhere without strict DL in place. Half the casinos I play at im on TAB - I never SE these days ever. The other half (and my list of casinos is quite small) all have DL in place. I shift them up and down depending on win and losses. Example have not gambled the past week as I got my bollocks handed to me cured and sliced last week by VS and Sky Vegas. So rather than chase I slammed the breaks on and dropped DL down below min. Sky vegas I did TAB for 10 days.

Im due to enter the arena again this weekend at both VS and Sky Vegas. But DL in place in both casinos. I know it can be really frustrating when you bust out, and wanna have one last chance to get on top but cant cause you hit your DL. But aint that the whole point of such things ?

It allows me to enjoy my vice these without loosing my sanity. My motto always now is - Never gamble to pay the rent and never gamble the rent.

That way I can live happily until my dotage being a casino junkie :D

What a fantastically brutal and honest statement!

Hit the nail on the head with how I feel as well. Using TAB to limit number of casinos I play at, but keeping a few accredited sites on the go with DLs in place. However, once in a while I remove these limits and have a blowout. Thankfully that paid off last weekend with a £1k profit, but I know it can seriously go in the opposite direction as well and it has done in the past, but deep down no regrets about it.

I know I shouldn't play so much, but, well, I simply enjoy it too much to wash my hands of slots! Enjoyment is still there, even with the usual swearing and hand gestures at the screen when a bonus goes tits up after spending 400 spins trying to get it!

I am and probably always will be a low roller with some withdrawals equivalent to what the high rollers place on one spin, but still keeps me happy. Deposit £20 and withdraw £50? Hell yes, I made a profit!! But, if I didn't make a withdrawal, I still see it that I only lost £20 and had some play time!

I agree with that. I used to play the Playtech Marvel slots a while ago and was lucky enough to win a total of 4 progressive jackpots. The best win was just over £1800 and although happy with that, it just felt like I had to carry on as it proved possible to win these jackpots.

After a good weekend of no limits, it was wise of me to put DL's back in place to ring fence my wins as I would/could of carried on playing.

Thats the way to do it, Knowing your own weaknesses and controlling them. It is risky though flying without a parachute .... but you got away with it so all good. Thing is .... I found when I got used to DL (Part of the learning process) I also got used to the fact that when I cant deposit more I just let it go. I hate to see people getting into a mess with what should be a pass time which is for fun and not to make a living. At the same time I have full respect for those who can gamble in a responsible way without the need for DL etc ... but that aint me Im afraid.

RG in the end is good for everyone. Even the casinos as for example me - rather than loose me as a player due to SE - they keep me - take some revenue of me but do so in a way that I dont loose my shirt or bank balance.

Exactly, its better for the casino if they get lets say £100 each month from you for the next ten years rather than £5000 in one day followed by an SE because you couldn't afford it.
And not only because its more money from you, but also your more positive experience translates to better word of mouth advertising.
