Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

Those were the days.

Belfast bap + a packet (maybe two) of crisps or corn-based snack of choice = one very happy camper.

Not the slightest bit ashamed to admit it, but the other day, I decided to take a culinary trip down memory lane.

Two slices of Irwins Nutty Krust and a packet of Flame Grilled Steak McCoys for a makeshift version of the 80s schoolboys lunch.

That day was a good day.
Steak mcoys! Ha blast from the past that.
Where the cheap crisps called ‘maize’ snacks if i remember correctly?

When i'm back home i take a good few of those in the boot as well, magic. Don't appreciate it until you try those itsy bitsy Mothers Pride plain bread.

Neither is a patch on the German bread mind you - i'd be ten ton tessie if i lived there, such is my love of starch. Except potatoes - unless they've had a crisp transformation.

Bykers weren't bad as a sandwich filler as well.

Whilst we're on crisps....

Top ones I miss

1) Wheelz?? - Large red packet, bit like today's Puffed Hula Hoops
2) Cheese Snaps - Quavers don't compare, different texture plus they stink
3) Rancheeros - Beefy flavour IIRC, anyone I ever mentioned em to never heard of them.

Rancheros are bacon flavour mate. They still exist. KP make them.
They do big share bags of them in the likes of Poundland, Spar and Iceland.

What on Earth is the bottom crisp mate? Not heard of those at all!..

What the fuck are they haha!!! I’m excited myself and no idea what the things even are lol

These (I think lol)

Untitled.png

Did not bother Googling in past till Marty mentioned they were still around as I was convinced they were long part of room 101

Never seen such a thing of beauty in years.
I’ll be on the lookout!.

Me too matey, me too!

Although while I've had time to think about it, not sure I've seen them around these parts, maybe not country wide distributed, then again wasn't looking for them either so ya never know!

Evening brothers and sisters!!!!
Tonight’s cooking in a Middlesbrough fog whilst enduring a tedious pandemic with playford will be again a disappointment...

reason being I had left over lasagne from last night and clearly in times of austerity like these waste not want and all.

So it’s lasagne, some seasoned skinny fries and generic onion rings and some garlic bread slices.

I’ve topped the lasagne however with some of my home grown parsley which i think adds to the dish.

And the lasagne was from scratch (no fork poking business going on here gaz!)
Got some decent peri peri sauce which I’ll drizzle over it too.
As always my best wishes and smiles to all here.
Ben

What the hell..
Loafs of bread with onion rings, nutty krusts with steaky mctoys.
Can we please go back to talking about cheese?

Never had it.
Need to put on bucket-list.
Need to get a miracle hit in Doa2 so i can justify buying a fondue set and a cheese fountain. :D

You no restaurants that do it locally? You guys are all open are you not mate?.

It’s worth it, I really enjoyed it.
Was frowned upon however as I asked for a side order of fries and a bucket of mussels in garlic and white wine on the side haha

Dont let the cheese-snobs dictate how you consume your cheese. :P

Looked around a bit now, and a basic fondue set is actually not expensive at all.
There are probably some restaurants doing it, but depending on what set you go for, it probably costs around the same to just buy your own set.

It was a expensive place and when I’m paying lots to eat there I’ll eat as I please mate, my money is as good as anyone else’s.

See that set looks awesome, I’ve looked at a few myself over the weeks. But being single and alone eating fondue would be super sad, that said my daughter loves cheese too and suppose could be a nice treat now and again.
And was the price in US dollars?

That looks immense! Details ASAP please
Ok that was an Ali’s munch box was fishing all day yesterday and never got dinner by the time I started night shift I could ate a farmers ass thru a barb wire fence.
3 spicy chicken legs
5 onion rings
Chicken pakora
Some horse meat sorry kebab meat
Hand cut fresh chips (bollocks they were frozen)
A portion on nam bread
Salad
House sauce
All for £10.50 including delivery
But by fuck I suffered from the grease hangover from it all day..

Yeah i think so.
And by the looks of it that is a "mid range" one.
They seem to go somewhere between £20-200 depending on how much one wants to spend.

Usually when it comes to things that you cook with, i try to avoid the cheapest stuff.
Had some bad experiences with cheap pots&pans.
Cheaper in the long run to spend a bit more for some higher quality.

Totally agree.
Poor pans provide piss poor performance.
Had some aweful sticking experiences.
I’ve been wanting a good quality knife set for a while, but due to the virus and lack of work having to put this on hold.
Have a good little indoor herb garden on the go at the minute however.
Me and Isabelle got some seeds a few months back and they are all thriving now, chillis also.

Here you go, few here.
Got some in my lounge, my room, the garden lol.
Have them all over my house, also strawberry plant outside and some carrots mate.
Isabelle loves nature so it’s good to encourage stuff like this I think.

Oh yes it is!
Nature is great, i highly recommend it in all its forms.
Documentaries, forest walks, boat trips etc.

I love it myself. My father was a keen bird watcher and uncle loved landscaping.
I love the outdoors and glad Isabelle does.
Don’t get me wrong she has a iPad and console but time on those is limited.
Rather be out and about the world rather than have my little girl learn through a screen.
Also have some great cacti and other succulents, some old and some just potted.
Me and Isabelle check the progress regularly.
Soon as this lockdown is over a camping trip is on the cards if her mother agrees, kids should be out and about seeing the world, climbing and falling, rock jumping over streams and playing in sand, it’s all free too

My cactus just flowering, my basil plant.
Also just some nature walks with Isabelle.
Got thousands of vids and photos of us out and about in the world.
Oh and some of various bits in the front garden lol.

His microwave cooking skills are far more superior than mine. I feel no shame in admitting it.

Other day I struggled with the MW; like, how am I meant to know if it’s DF1 setting or DF2?; I just leave it sitting overnight usually ffs. And why’s it cooking the sausages, it’s only meant to be taking the ice off them. Too many variables.

Vodka is well up there.

Maybe you have not had roast potatoes?

I am not sure what i would miss more, after all there is always Whisky.

:puke:

They're worse - they give the impression, with their crispy gold-ness, that they're going to be nice and then, after a bite, you're still confronted by the utter blandness they have to offer.

When i worked in Belfast, if i couldn't be bothered getting the train home, I'd sometimes stay at my uncles and when i asked him he'd say, without fail, 'Sure, what time will you be up, cos Mary's making SPUD's': 5 days a week, SPUD's.

Then, when i got home, my mum would say 'What do you want with these potatoes?' 'Er, a curry?' ffs they were everywhere i turned.

I have to confess: I usually eat "new" potatoes once a summer when the harvest season starts. But even then you need to have some herring and butter to get some flavour out of these hellish tuber crops.

And you really need to wash them down with ice cold vodka and beer. Another excuse to drink in the summer. But I don't usually need a reason anyway.

Yeah, not a big fan of spuds.

Spuds reminds me of Spurs or Tottenham Hotspurs - The Spuds.

Yes I agree new potatoes need accompaniment. Minted ones are nice but yes, lashings of butter and not had Herring for ages which i now fancy :)

We eat Mackerel mostly and Cod now and again. Either go well with new potatoes.

What about creamy mash?

See the potato is so versatile and gives you bags of energy which is sometimes necessary for drinking.

Mackerel is a great fish. I love it smoked.

Creamy mash sounds like a weird British bedroom game to be honest :p

Sometimes a mash of some sort goes well with fish. But I'd rather go with Jerusalem artichoke (what a weird name, wikipedia said it was the correct one) or cauliflower instead of potatoes.

What about bubble and squeak?

Now that is one tasty mess. Without potato the bubble has no squeak.

We actually eat something like that once in awhile. But with cabbage and eggs (instead of spuds) mixed and fried. Requires a tangy sauce (made from shrimp paste, fish sauce, lemon and the works) though.
