Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

Although strict maybe not overly effective, as you have one of the highest infection rates per capita, worldwide. Higher than America even, although your death rates are extremely low.

Please inform yourselves before posting, I wrote about it a few times.

The absolute majority of cases are in the dormitories, so nothing to do whatsoever with the restrictions that are put in place. If you have 10-20 people sleeping in a room, with 50K people in a single compound, odds are high that such an infectious disease will spread.

Singaporeans/PRs are less than 1000 cases in total. So, the restrictions work. We had on average less than 10 cases per day for over two weeks. Compare that to the US and they should have less than 3,000 cases per day but are regularly over 20,000. So not really comparable.

Is it just me or is Dominic Cummings making things worse for himself with some of his answers?
I think he is coming across as arrogant and above the rules, very disappointed that Boris has backed him.

He has one of the worst personalities I have seen in politics for a long time.

The way he spoke to that Doctor was disgusting. He comes across as being completely out of touch with the situation and out of touch with the average man.

There was a time when a politician would be able to talk to anybody on many levels. Now some of them just have to know how to speak to the financial houses.

Oh yes, I forgot how badly treated migrant workers are in Singapore, my apologies.

Totally bizarre a government advisor is wheeled out like that- least it shows who the real boss is at Nos 10 :p

One of the WHO bosses has said on Catalan radio a second "big" wave is unlikely but that we have to stay alert ;)

Here's an article in Spanish for those interested, Google translate and all that.

Think we have read all possible scenarios with this virus already, all possible simulations and theories probably are written and after year or two some few people can say they were right (in one of their 20 opinions during this).

And not referring to @sufferinsilence but all these experts we read different stories every day :)

I think you know only what you have seen in the news. While it is not perfect by quite a margin, nor very cosy and homely, it is much better than in most Asian countries that have migrant workers. They come on contracts for months or a couple of years until a project is finished and their focus is to send as much money home as possible. Because, you know, they have usually very large families living under one roof that includes everyone from kids to grandparents. No one is forced to stay in a dormitory but it is the cheapest accommodation.

FYI, on average they are paid more per month than the UK is paying migrant workers, e.g. the veggie pickers on the farms. Plus, the SG government is paying their wages while they are in lockdown, so they can still support their families and all medical fees if they need treatment. Have you once been to a house where UK migrant workers stay? So you can spare the "I forgot...." sarcasm.

Seems like the wonder drug is causing a bit of concern with real medical experts....

Unfortunately, due to the fact that WHO is now seen as China's baitch and under their control, so many conspiracy theories are now surfacing around this.

Namely that:
- it is an attempt to discredit Donald Trump, who touted the use of HCQ in the first place
- the HCQ tests didn't include zinc so the results are not credible
- unbelievable that a drug that has been around for decades has now been claimed to be "unsafe" when treating COVID-10
- given to patients whose lungs were already affected, and who were going to die anyway.

Ad nauseum.

All I can say is that the world's collective IQ appears to be diminishing on a daily basis.

Don't forget to throw in big pharma, Bill Gates and Dr Fauci for good measure. HCQ won't make enough profit, so they let half a million die to force some new and expensive drug/vaccine on the people.

What the conspiracy theorists forget is that big pharma is losing out as well. No operations with all the expensive drugs in the operating theatre and people leaving hospitals with a catalogue of drugs, no cancer treatment with the drugs costing hundreds or thousands , R&D stalled to make sure the resources are focused on a vaccine, clinical trials held up.
I don’t think Covid -19 has made many winners out there, though some will be making money out of it.

I was reading an article in the UK Guardian about COVID-19, and a comment by a cancer sufferer was very sad. She said she felt as if she was a second-class citizen, as all attention was focused on Coronavirus patients, and life-saving treatment she was entitled to, including chemo, had been cancelled.

Unfortunately, that is what is happening over here as well. If you do not have Coronavirus, then basically - you are on your own.

So COVID-19 just might end up being responsible for more deaths than just those caused by the actual virus.

Disgraceful.

Cant remember the source but there were interviews with various Cancer, and other, consultants/doctors who were saying the same thing; patients who would have had X chance or survival are now down to Y

Our household knows folk, as probably other on this forum will do as well, who are in that horrible position; and yeah, find it quite galling, to hear the same sound bites of ‘we are still here for you for non Covid health issues’ which, quite frankly, is bollocks.

As a slightly differing view to that, one of my best friends had his operation 6 weeks ago to remove his lung cancer. He was in ICU for over 2 weeks following it and has only been home for 10 days now. He had also had major heart surgery 12 weeks before that, so he was extremely high risk.

I spoke to the Doctor afterwards and he said he very much doubted any other hospital would have operated and they only did as they hadn't had a single Covid-19 case so felt it was safe to do so.
I asked him why they were cancelling elsewhere as obviously cancer is serious and surely people would die by not getting treatment, and his reply was simply (referring to other hospitals), yes, but while we can do most operations or treatments in a couple of months, hopefully when the virus had died down, or at least was contained and they had 'clean' space to work (like the freeman was), if someone went in for treatment and caught Covid-19, it was pretty much guaranteed they would die, well before any operation or treatment worked.
He did say anyone who was at a critical stage was usually getting operated on, but all the risks were explained to the family and patient beforehand.

Unfortunately its a bit of a catch 22 for the DR's, if the lady in the article had gone for her chemo, caught it and died, then the family would have been demanding answers as to why they didn't cancel the chemo :(

Coronavirus uses same strategy as HIV to dodge immune response, Chinese study finds
  • Both viruses remove marker molecules on surface of an infected cell that are used to identify invaders, according to Chinese researchers
  • This commonality could mean Sars-CoV-2 may be around for some time, they say
Their research involved collecting killer T cells from five patients who had recently recovered from Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus. Those immune cells are generated by people after they are infected with Sars-CoV-2 – their job is to find and destroy the virus.

But the killer T cells used in the study were not effective at eliminating the virus in infected cells. When the scientists took a closer look they found that a molecule known as major histocompatibility complex, or MHC, was missing.

The molecule is an identification tag usually present in the membrane of a healthy cell, or in sick cells infected by other coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or Sars. It changes with infections, alerting the immune system whether a cell is healthy or infected by a virus.

HIV uses the same strategy – MHC molecules are also absent in cells infected with that virus.

“In contrast, Sars does not make use of this function,” Zhang said.

----------------

Interesting that the Nobel Laureate scientist Luc Montagnier was of the opinion that part of the HIV virus had been added to the covid -19 dna sequence, and that could only have been done by experts in a lab.

Seems that eye problems that Cummings used as a very lame excuse have no link to covid19 apart from
the normal effects that happen when you sneeze and cough a lot,not one expert has verified it can cause
problems.Bit pathetic that Boris piped up saying he had eye problems too.
Really really cant understand why Boris is so determined to back him, perhaps its something to do
with the black book (mythical book where transgressions are recorded and used for favours and influence in the future).or may be not... who cares ?

Haven't really followed "Cummings Gate" closely, but did i get it right that he keep stating that having a little drive is a decent way to take do it yourself eye test? Without any expertise, just feels that there would be some better and especially more safe ways to test your eyes than taking a car ride... Hope everybody who have symptoms in their eyes, don't start to use same method to find out IF they are able to ride or not.

30 miles is a pretty good test, good job his eyes were ok
Especially after driving 270 miles to make sure his child was safe...... god forbid if his eyes gave up on the drive back to London and obviously he needed to put his wife and child into the car for the test drive to make sure they stayed safe......

This live questioning is really bad, he really doesn't have any idea what he's doing, he can barely string 2 words together

Very unimpressive performance from the PM today, only watched a couple of minutes but that was enough to see he has changed a lot from the old Boris,he wouldnt have a hope in hells chance of winning an election now.
To be kind he had a shit time with the virus and maybe the responsibility on his shoulders is just too much.

I genuinely don't think theres anything to be kind about. He barely answered any questions, and just bluffed his way through the others, like

(on right to remain people)
they have no recourse to public funds

BJ : They could claim Universal Credit

no, I've just said, thy have no recourse to public funds

BJ : er, oh, er, er, well, er, I will have to get back to you on that one

I think this was his preperation for today

I said this before his election. He managed to bluff his way through most of his life and now when push comes to shove you see who he really is.

Plus, I remember not to long ago some member here were proclaiming what a strong leader Mr J is, gushing at him as if he would be the second coming. Well, seeing his performances lately, he doesn't really portray that.

I wish the UK all the best with the Brexit but I can see quite a chaos approaching in Jan 2021 when he can't even deal decisively with a personnel issue that is clear to everyone else.

Some real sh**e being posted on Facebook...... Cummings came back to stop a remainer revolt....
If it was so important he had to come back I am sure Boris would have sent a helicopter for him and in doing so the poor wee dear wouldnt have had to worry about his eyes.....

To be fair, given what we saw last year with the remain rabble trying to paralyse parliament, a lot of that is really quite believable, even if it is bullshit.

Now we only need the code to reverse engineer that pesky covid-19 and all is ok in the world again.

I know it's a reason to celebrate, but remember to party responsibly :)

At last, the real truth about Coronavirus...... I am sure it is from really reliable sources....

I got sent this pile of sh**e video by a facebook friend who has now been snoozed for 30 days.
It is so sad that people really believe this, and its worse when it comes from someone you thought was half sensible.

in offices and high rise blocks.
The hospital here in Umeå used to have those.
Used to play with them whenever i was there.
Probably not the safest thing in the world, but it was pretty fun.

Perhaps its better to install Intellivators.
That way people dont feel lonely even if they are riding the elevator alone.

Think we have to remember this covid thing is far from over, 337 UK deaths in the last day show that.
All the positive news about pubs, racing and most shops opening soon might cheer us up but now is not
the time to let our guard down, hopefully it will fizzle out or at least relent long enough to allow a vaccine
to become available but nothing is certain.
