Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

@dionysus
Better disinfect your cats.
For real tho, you come in contact with alot more cats than the average cat owner does im guessing.

bjbj.gif

But dont you trap them and send the ones not good for eating to shelters or something?
=)
Lol, we trap ferals to be fixed and released if they arent tame enough to be put into adoption but mostly winter they come around; mice and birds aplenty in spring
But due to the virus it's all on hold; they havent been receiving donations t have the cats fixed and the vets and shelters are all out of sorts business wise

Not been much mooching around lately, just one little guy

It should be pointed out that before people start chucking out their cats, there's different strains of coronavirus and it hasnt been extablished we can pass it to cats and vice versa.

People that let their cats go outside have a new problem. Cats can get infected by other cats and bring the virus back home to infect the owners.
This is scaremongering at it's worst, and is simply NOT TRUE! There is absolutely no evidence that cats can infect humans, although the reverse is certainly true. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such ill-informed nonsense.

so...who else foresees a lot of cats being dumped off at shelters..

Why? Because a tiger tested positive? Although I do accept your point as there are some incredibly stupid people out there.
Yep. Human-Cat transmission is possible. Nearly 15% of cats tested at Wuhan were coronavirus positive.

If anyone dumps a cat due to a (remote) possibility their pet gets infected, then they truly do not deserve to have any animals in their care, ever again.

At times, humans really can be complete garbage.

“There doesn’t appear to be, at this time, any evidence that suggests that the animals can spread the virus to people or that they can be a source of the infection in the United States,” Dr. Jane Rooney, a veterinarian and a USDA official, said in an interview.

Exactly. Thank you for posting a quote from a reputable source. Something I should have done.

Can they not transfer the virus same way something from the store can.
Someone with the virus pets them with their germy hands or coughs/sneezes on them.
Cat goes home and tries to murder its owner in their sleep cuddles with their owner who is asleep, and baam infected.

Unlikely...although animal to human transmission of viruses obviously can occur (think CJD or rabies), interspecies cross-contamination is very rare.

And the scenario you mention is (mostly) discounted in the following article:

As for...Cat goes home and tries to murder its owner in their sleep it is more likely that this would happen...

Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep depriving, incessant pleas for food at ungodly hours of the night. (Source: Cat's diary. Day 762).

Im not overly fond of cats it must admit.
Mostly because i have two neighbours who have cats who are outside most all summer, and they insist on using my comfy chairs as toilets.
They look similar to this and i got them because sister decided to upgrade her outdoorsy chairs.

I tried borrowing my brothers dog, since i figured she would scare the crap out of any cat daring to enter "her" yard.
Turns out she doesnt mind cats, and they became friends instead. Traitor.
But really tho, if they keep peeing on my chairs, their owners will find themselves putting up missing posters one of these days.

I'm beginning to think the Cat's Diary was written just for you....

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair... must try this on their bed.

First of all calm down.

1- Animal to human is possible (that's how it all started)
2- Human to cat is possible.
3-

.

Of course there's no evidence yet of a human getting it from a cat, that would take a long time to prove. It's the same virus projected in the air/droplets...whether it comes from a bat, a cat, someone sneezing or a door handle as long as it's the same virus the source doesn't matter.

Agreed, although I have never denied this. See my previous posts.

In fact, the worst offenders have always been bats, which are suspected of being the source of COVID-19 (although there are a myriad of conspiracy theories doing the rounds), mosquitoes (malaria/yellow fever etc.), rats (Lyme disease), and a few more.

2- Human to cat is possible.
Indeed, but this is not relevant to the subject under discussion.

Again...not sure what point you are making.

This is not strictly correct. All animals (and humans are included here) carry viruses which only affect their own species - e.g. FIV in cats. However, for a virus to infect a different species, the base genetic material has to undergo numerous mutations before it may develop the ability to affect both its own species as well as other species. This mutation takes a long time, and is fairly rare.

Also the key word here is 'may develop'.
An interesting article on Zoonosis is:

The Ruby Princess drama is getting worse.

As I mentioned earlier, approximately 2700 passengers were allowed to disembark in Sydney on March 19th without any health checks at all, and most of the COVID-19 deaths in Australia are attributable to these passengers.

There is now an ongoing homicide investigation as it is believed that the crew of the Ruby Princess misled the NSW government as to the seriousness of the situation on board.

There are still over 1000 crew on board, from over 50 different countries, and now about 200 are showing signs of COVID-19.

The ship had been moored off Botany Bay for about 2 weeks, but has now moved down to Port Kembla while the government tries to figure out what to do. These people are being quarantined on the ship, but as with the Diamond Princess, that didn't work out very well for the passengers, many of whom developed COVID-19 due to the cramped conditions.

And the people of Wollongong are furious as they are afraid that if the infected are moved onshore, they will overwhelm the local hospitals to the extent that locals will be refused beds and treatment.

Not a very pleasant situation at all.

Yeah, i read about that earlier.
A very unfortunate situation for everyone involved.

How are you lovely? hope you and you're family are well ❤

I am in self isolation mina, into week 3 of flu like symptoms and feeling achy. My son works in a food distribution centre so has been going to work every day for 12 hours with no protection so it's feasible I could have mild symptoms but who knows - bored out of my tree right now :)

Have you checked to see whats in the fridge?
I find that helps with the boredom.
Also im not sure i was 100% sane to begin with, so that helps.

I have cleaned the fridge out more times than I can count recently! Anyway is it not a man thing to check what's in the fridge all the time? :p

Oh that's no good you poor darling, funnily my son lives with me and he also works in a similar job with long hours but they do have to wear masks, gloves etc.

I hope you get well really quickly ❤️

Does your son do that ? because my son drives me insane.

Fridge open, cupboard open, back to the fridge yawning finally back to his room

He comes in from work, open's the fridge, stares into it, leaves the door open whilst he checks out the cupboard and back to the fridge again - If he asks for something I will tell him it's in the cupboard, he opens it and unless it is staring him in the face, he swears blind it's not there:cool:

Seems another man thing that unless something is not directly in front of them, it doesn't exist

The problem with this scenario is this....

Man does shopping, brings home shopping, unpacks efficiently and effectively into cupboards using tried and tested 'out the bag, in the cupboard' method..

Woman with lots of spare time on her hands as a result of man running round in circles for her rearranges cupboard in alphabetical order illogically placing oxo cubes next to pasta and juice next to kumquats.

Another strange phenomena would be arrangement in colour or aesthetics which leads to more illogical confusion.

Man goes to cupboard and stares in bemused confusion at the illogical arrangement of cupboards following his efficient method of 'out the bag in the cupboard'.

Yes, that must be it.
All these damn women thats always here must be the ones responsible for me not finding stuff.
Sometimes i almost wish i wasnt such a babe-magnet, almost.

Getting back on track my mind has been thinking more about what to do over the coming months in reaction to Coronavirus and the possible after effects.

I heard my neighbour say to somebody yesterday 'this is going to change everything!'.

I know very little of economics but just read about how to prepare for an economic collapse.....

I wonder how serious i should take stories like this and wanted to ask if anybody is preparing especially for potential outcomes?

Homeworking seems to be at the forefront of my mind now and i also see a lot of antibacterial cleaning, food delivery etc businesses popping up and people making moves to adjust to the current climate.

Is anybody changing their plans for the future or making new plans and preparations as a result?

Can anyone help to shed any light on what to expect when we come out the other side of this?

Coming back to your question as Austria was the first to make a plan public. I assume it will be similar in most countries now under lockdown, although the dates might be somewhat later than Austria's since they are over the apex already.

What I found really funny is that they specifically mention hairdressers. :D

Yes, the mention of hairdressers seems odd in addition to shops and shopping centres.

Wore a mask for the first time today in the shops. My kids have their own now also.

I was the only one apart from another wearing a scarf around his face. I did feel a little odd but at least im taking the best precautions i can for now. I see the next few weeks as critical for keeping myself and the kids well because of the spike, shortages, beds etc

Regarding masks i read that a lot of 3D printer owners and universities and 3D printing companies have come together to support the front line.

3D printers seem quite useful in a crisis.

What is it with the statements about Boris? All I read is that it was a precaution for some tests, he had “a comfortable night”, is in "good spirits" and will stay for further observation. Sounds rather ominous.

Standard is that you get hospitalized only when your situation has substantially deteriorated.

So what is the actual situation? Would be the last thing the UK needs right now to have to look for another PM.

I agree nobody gets admitted to hospital unless they need to be especially at present with bed shortages so he is poorly. I really hope he recovers and soon. Regardless of politics he's only 55 and his partner is expecting their baby. It's crap he has got this ill whilst trying to run the country at same time.

The spokesman refused to answer the question is Boris on oxygen. So to me that means yes he is .

Lets hope he's up and about real soon. Keep fighting Boris.

People being let out after some 2 months "social distancing". :D

This is quite a popular spot in somewhat eastern China, Huangshan Mountain Park, about a 6-hour drive from Shanghai. I visited the place in 2005, stunning scenery but TBH, I am surprised those railings and walkways have not collapsed. They didn't look that sturdy to me at the time.

Aalto University, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University of Helsinki have brought together a multidisciplinary group of researchers to model how the extremely small droplets that leave the respiratory tract when coughing, sneezing or talking are transported in air currents.

I do hope they are honest with what they are saying and that he will recover soon.

However, according to the Chinese study of some 50,000 patients, this is the development when cases get severe. IIRC, the PM was tested positive about 10 days ago, so he is in the 8-10 days window. :o

According to my nearest expert (my mother - recently retired ICU nurse of 45 years), he would only be admitted to the hospital if he were in respiratory distress and in need of supplemental oxygen.

And a question for everyone: because Boris is the PM, do you think he would go to the hospital out of an abundance of caution (earlier than the average person) or do you think his condition would have to be real bad before he would go to hospital?
