Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

Pub night was cancelled tonight. Now this shit is real :(

And I'm stranded here - had to renew my passport being told it takes 2-3 weeks - it's over two weeks now and I feel trapped. I was planning to head out to the desert to build a barn.

Stranded where?

If anyone's interested to read about a good example of how this virus is spreading from a small apres-ski bar to nearly a dozen countries, google Ischgl Corona. Couldn't find much in English language but maybe your local Google engine will turn up better search results.

Amazingly again, people failed to see the danger because of the greed to have a full last week of the skiing season. A single case in a bar in the Austrian ski resort town is now responsible for hundreds of infected people, that go as far as Iceland and who in turn have probably infected thousands before the alarm was sounded with very little chance of any contact tracing.

well, that's just great; I'm probably a plague rat - had 3 friends over, who are off to the Dominican
*dio closely watches the country numbers next week

we just went on lock-down

*Effective immediately, the province has ordered the closure of all facilities providing indoor recreation programs, all public libraries, all private schools, all licensed childcare centres, all theatres, cinemas and concert venues, and all bars and restaurants except to provide takeout food and delivery. *

kinda

(Ford says this is not a provincial shut down and the majority of businesses won't be affected by the order. Essential services such as grocery stores will continue to operate. )

fyi currently:
Only eight new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed in Ontario on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 185 including five recoveries. No new cases were reported in Toronto on Tuesday.

I got my results back. Thank Christ for that :cheerleader:

I am nearing despair. The missus tells me she'll be working from home as from Monday next week at latest, schools will likely be shut by then too. I am not sure I can survive being cooped up in the house, even in different rooms from her, when used to my own space as I work from home. No football, no music no fun - it's only Bonanza that can stop me reaching for the razor blades. My mental health will be under the most immense pressure I have ever experienced. I will have to get one of those wooden offices ordered for the garden, otherwise that's me done...

Trump has no doubt studied the virus, and knows more about it than, well anyone else.
But are we sure he was the one who came up with the idea that warmer weather would slow the spread of the virus?
:)
He has a TREMENDOUS amount of knowledge on COVID-19. In fact he came up with the name, but he doesn't like to brag about that. He prefers "Chinese virus"now.

Because he knows more about pandemics than anyone ever in the history of plagues of humanity!

I have a rather nice mancave at the bottom of the garden, amuse myself for hours in there :)
Seriously a lot of people are going to have trouble adjusting to living on top of each other 24 hours, 7 days a week, I am fortunate in a way as I am used to it, being a full time carer but I do get stir crazy now and then
and no one is going to stop me walking the dog.

Don't be silly, he's just repeating what the experts told him. There are doctors on day and night here and on the weekend shows and that question has come up a 100 times.

do not feel comfortable enough being here to know who i can PM if i just want to pass the time with a friendly chat.

If you ever feel like a chat about anything I am here :)

I know its tough for a lot of people and very scary for some. Having to talk to someone helps a lot.

Take care and wishing your mum the best as well xx

I have not watched anything on tv for at least a month so I have no idea what is getting widely reported. I do read some of their articles online. I have tried to post stuff that is mostly about calming fears because there is some panic going on in this thread.
My mistake was saying Trump was right but it is not about him. It is much bigger than that so lets leave politics out of it please

Just venting here lol

The other day when I got told by service station lady that she will put loo paper away for me has not happened as the deliveries never came :(

I can not buy meat, pasta, eggs and a whole lot more so I am reduced to buying takeaway a lot.

I can not believe that people are not listening and how can they have so much money all of a sudden to buy the whole shop :eek2:

Maybe it is a time to consider the elderly to ensure that they have all they need? I will post something to that effect in my local buying and selling sites on social media after I finish this post

Lovely

I work in a nursing home and there is plenty there so I can always use the loo there, my work is very close 1 min walk ;)

I mainly need food now :eek2:

its getting beyond a joke with the amount of panic buying going on do these idiots not realise that they could potentially have blood on their hands??
We certainly are not seeing the best of human kindness

There are a lot of human kindness but that is not shown very much unfortunately :(

My niece is one of them who offered this poor old man toilet paper. She felt so sorry for him because he seemed so lost but he didn't want any help and said " I will be fine love" Maybe she scared him

I just counted how much TP we have left because well... there's no live sport on TV and I was even considering betting on a Russian table tennis match so definitely needed some distraction.

Anyway, the final tally is 16 rolls of TP left out of a 24 roll "family pack" we bought over a month ago. I really wonder what people are doing with those huge packs of TP...

And if a neighbour would be without I'd gladly help him out with half a roll. ;)

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I have been thinking about how we, the world in general, are going to handle reopening the parts of society we closed when the first wave is coming to an end. Experts have been saying this will be in 4 to 8 weeks for most of us in Europe, not sure about the rest of the world.

Once there will be more people recovering than there are new cases there will be a push from people everywhere that it's time to lift restrictions but it'll automatically mean that due to more people meeting again there will be new cases again because the virus won't just disappear in thin air.

Will we have to accept that this is around and we have to treat it with respect from now on until the virus mutates into a regular cold virus or when a vaccine, cure or medicine is found? Keep in mind there is no cold-shot like there is a flu-shot so I'm not sure if there ever will be a successful vaccine because viruses mutate all the time.

So let's assume we succeed in getting numbers down pretty fast due to all the restrictions right now and next year around this time there is a flare up, are we going to close down society again? Are we going to disrupt the world economy again just 1 year after a crash?

Sorry if I'm rambling, just some food for thought I guess.

I'd imagine services and facilities get reintegrated gradually and not all in one fell swoop, plus the longest I can estimate full- or part-closures will be a year at most. At least until the vaccine becomes commonplace

if it happened in winter, people would be well, pfft, it's Canada, I WANT to stay in
but after 6 months of cold and snow people will be itching to be out and about

people will probably be ok missing beaches and bars but already every driveway on the st has twice the cars so people will still gather in backyards

A year is a very long time in our fast moving society. The push will happen way earlier. I agree everything will have to be done gradually like organise football matches in stadiums only allowing 10-20% of capacity and space them out, stuff like that.

That was just a speculative effort. Personally, I think *most* regular haunts will be up & running 2-3 months, just not all. And large swathes of people will likely go out and about, being somewhat fed-up of the Government's lacklustre advice and restrictions. At least in London :eek2:

im at a toss up
some bars and restaurants still viewing closures as 'suggestions, so we'll either have a massively infected pop. and shut downs for several coming months

or people will get the hint, the virus will work its way through and be back up and out in 3 weeks

Think that goes for most of the western world, especially when summer comes along. With major sporting events already being cancelled or postponed until autumn or 2021 people will want to be out and about during the summer season.

We have closed mostly everything now except supermarkets, banks, post offices and ofcourse take-away restaurants  Sure, less people will catch the virus now at once but eventually it will still do the rounds because we intervened way too late to stop it and we don't want to put our society on hold like the Chinese can. It's a thin line I reckon.

honesly, probably a lot of usalready have it and don't know and I don't mean because of testing and stuff - plenty will simply be asymptomatic with little or no symptoms and pass it along

I've been hacking last 3 days but it's also just 'that season' in general, air change, weather change, allergy season
but heck, could be corona and just the mildest of symptoms but still a carrier

we'll probably almost all be dosed in time
