Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

I live in Hong Kong which has several borders with mainland China. The number of infection cases have exceeded 16000 with 305 deaths and 380 recoveries. No vaccine has yet been developed and the number of infection cases in mainland China are rising by more than 2000 daily.

My whole city is in turmoil as I type. Our Chief Executive is unwilling to close the borders with mainland China and at least several thousand come to Hong Kong everyday and they are indeed high risk carriers of the coronavirus. Ridiculous as it seems the whole population of 7 million are scrambling for surgical face masks at up to 20 times the normal price as the government has refused o take measures to diffuse the situation. Just today our medical staff are on strike against the stance to leave the borders open yet again the government doesnt budge. Hong Kong now has 15 infection cases which is more than any country outside China but the full effects will be fully felt within a week as tens of thousands of our citizens return to Hong Kong from the mainland.

This virus is contagious and those infected carry no symptoms eg. coughing, high temperature etc. until a week or up to 2 weeks. Anyone who has been to Wuhan, China is a high risk carrier of the virus but 5 million Wuhanese escaped from the place to all parts of the world before the place was totally locked down so there is a likelihood of there being many carriers of the virus everywhere especially mainland China. Not to be racist to my fellowmen but be extra careful if you are in close contact with anyone coming from China in the past 2 months ie since mid-Dec last year. Bless you all.

Thank you.

I suspected we weren't aware of the full situation.

I can't believe I read posts on here from people saying this was just a Brexit distraction. This is a fairly serious viral outbreak. Luckily it looks as though a fairly common anti viral medicine is somewhat effective against this virus...but how readily can we have enough stockpiled in the event of a pandemic?

For unknown reasons China has refused to allow the USA to help out. With its advanced medical knowledge, I am sure the USA could come out with something. Damn. Everything is so politicised these days. Honestly, as yet there is no medicine that is effective against the vaccine and experts had said it take months to come up with them. I suggest not to take any medicine against the coronavirus as thee is so much fake news floating around. This one is serious and deadly. It was complacency that led to inhabitants in Wuhan not knowing they were infected and spread them to so many people in the city. I am hopeful though, when the weather gets warmer, that the virus would somehow taper off but right now, according to stats, 1 carrier of the disease could affect 1.4 persons. After a cycle of say, six days, the figure could multiply yet another time. Treat this like your bankroll. Start off with 500 and have it multiplied 1.4 times every 6 days over 3 months. You will be astonished.

Well I though I should share the following advice with you all..... please pay particular attention to the bottom point as it’s meant that I’ve had to totally alter my plans/diary dates for the week....

Thanks for that but do remember most of the infected patients have no visible symptoms for up to 2 weeks after being infected. The virus can be transmitted through close contact and mostly through the air through conversing with an infected person. Recently,it has been discovered that those infected have poo-poo that contains a lot of the toxic virus and so it is necessary to flush the poo poo after having them fully covered up to prevent the virus sprinklings from spreading.

It is absolutely necessary to avoid contact with anyone coming from Wuhan, China be they Chinese or of any nationality. The virus spread from Wuhan in mid-late Dec 2019. Keep safe folks. This virus is deadly and above all smart.

More hysteria. And what a surprise with the Chinese government not allowing help.
mots pretty much a small outbreak going on the figures, that said my sex with animals has ceased for the moment.

Like slotting it’s good to take a break

Wouldn’t recommend KFC for a while though

Watched some clips earlier from china and it reminded me of the beginning of the original dawn of the dead movie, with an uncontrollable virus overwhelming society, just had that eerie feel to the place, with the residents/authorities in a state of fear and panic.

The last time I had proper flu I thought I was dying, that was about 1998, my body/immune system was literally in a death struggle with the virus, if this is worse than that god help anyone who gets it, hopefully it doesn't become something of a regular fixture of our winter flu period, with new strains popping up

Yes, flu is horrendous. I remember 2 bouts of it. Seasonal flu in 2007 and swine flu in late 2009.

With the one on 2007 I was in bed for a whole week. Didn't get up once. Had to have a bowl by the bed to piss in...not that I pissed much as I was too dehydrated. My urine was bright orange. Pain in my kidneys too. Genuinely thought I was a goner.

Flu is eerie in as much as when you have it you feel completely detached from life, everything. It's grim.

Easier said than done

China is getting desperate but as it is unable to come out with solutions it seeks to downplay the issue with so-called experts coming out with ludicrous suggestions. There are worrying signs, over the past couple of days, that the coronovirus is speading locally within various communities ie those infected are not confined to people who came out from China.

The total number of infected cases exceed 24000 with 500 deaths and about 900 full recoveries. The mortality rate is around 2% but this is only based on those who had been infected for a short time so though China has declared the rate will be coming down , until the number of full recoveries rise rapidly, I would treat this with a pinch of salt. People over 60 and those with a history of illness, including cancer, are risk-prone. Just yesterday, a 39-year old who was diagnosed with the coronavirus died after seeing his condition altered from stable to very serious suddenly. This lad had a lifetime history of illness.

For countries that have only a handful of infection cases, my best advice is to stick with hygienic measures and avoided touching any parts of your face eg. nose, eyes etc. after making contact with people or after touching things in public places. In crowded places, wear a surgical mask and beware people coughing or sneezing though these symptoms may not necessarily be present in carriers of the virus. Avoid complacency as this is what caused the virus to be widespread in Wuhan. Their citizens knew nothing about the virus till more than 2 weeks later. This city, with a population of 11 million is currently in total lockdown and neighbouring cities are either in total or partial lockdown mode as well.

On the positive side there have been promising news emerging from various quarters about a vaccine that has turned a couple of infected folks from being tested negative to the virus. Its early days though. I must stress I am no medical expert and can only relay what I know. Take care all.

Got to say I have little sympathy for China. Given the way this disease was started from live animal food market or how they cook animals alive and the horrendous conditions animals suffer in this culture everyday, one would think it's some sort of karma.

Whilst I wish no ill on people one hopes when they do recover they think twice how they treat animals with so little lack or empathy. But sadly a nation that treats it's own people like they do I doubt they suddenly develop a conscious.

I'm quite surprised how so little has been made of this issue.

I am Chinese. Hong Kong is part of China but I am nevertheless extremely disgusted by their lack of responsibility. Up till now, there have been differing versions on the cause of the coronavirus. First, it was about eating wildlife, then it was snakes and then its about bats. Recently, people have mentioned it was a virus accidentally created at a laboratory called P4 just 20km away from Wuhan. This lab specialises in the study of viruses especially SARS. Up till now, the cause has not been confirmed and that is a hindrance to those who want to develop a vaccine. In the next few days, medical experts from the whole world will go to China to help out.

China has been eating this way for a long time, The lancet has come out and said this mutation is NOT fortuitous. In Layman's terms, it means it's likely not entirely a natural occurrence. It could have spread through the food market yes, but the mutation itself did not spontaneously occur in the meat market, and bats were not in season nor being sold at the market when the first record of the virus broke out.

There is what would be a 25-60 year gap between the bat virus and this one in terms of mutations. Bats are very unlikely to be the source. It would be lovely if the wet markets were shut down, but it would likely not have stopped this virus.

The Ebola virus started when a bat bit a child and the rumour I heard last week about Coronavirus was a snake ate a bat and the snake was then sold at a meat market.

For some reason these viruses seem to start in bats.

Yes you are absolutely correct, the original virus started in bats. The problem is it seems to have skipped what would normally take nearly a century of mutations and we need to find out why. A big problem is when pigs are stored with other animals like this (it's how the bird/swine flu happened) zoonosis speeds up..it's just not usually this quickly. We need to find out where the rapid mutation came from, and set a standard for avoiding that, or this could get worse with other viruses. There could be a NEW animal previously not thought to act as a host for transmission to humans, and that's not good.

‘Bats where not in season’
They are not bloody strawberries man!..

If the bat had been eaten by a snake which was sold at the market you do not know how long the bat had been inside the snake so bat season would not matter.

I saw a vid on twitter a few days back of a man eating new born baby rats, dipping them into some sort of liquid and making hmm noises as he gobbled them down ...according to the post it was from a restaurant somewhere in wuhan.

I wish I could erase the image from my mind

What's so wrong with a chicken or veg stir fry

A vlogger based in china has come up on my youtube recommended list recently, Nathan rich, and he was walking around somewhere in beijing and it was like a ghost town, empty shopping malls, shops closed for the forseable.

It looks like china is in its winter season, I always thought similar to australia they would have their summer while we have our winter but everyone is wearing coats and it looks cold. Maybe once the sun comes the virus will die off, we don't get flu in the summer in the uk so I think sunlight does kill the flu virus, hopefully it can kill this coronavirus.

"The correlation between low and high solar virucidal radiation and high and low disease prevalence, respectively, suggest that inactivation of viruses in the environment by solar UV radiation plays a role in the seasonal occurrence of influenza pandemics. " [for any geeks :p]

Sure, they dont treat the animals very nice all round china.
But a quick google search/youtube search on how our cows, pigs, chickens spend their days up until slaughter shows we are not any better.
Thats what mass production&consumption will do.

But the important issue here is Snakes eating bats.
Because we all know what that means.

Yeah, you guessed right.
Flying snakes.

The Corona-virus may be scary, but not as scary as flying danger-noodles.

It's the sea snakes that get me, such fast movers in the water, normally just under the surface where you'd be swimming  fortunately not a big problem in british waters, though we have their cousins the killer eel. :p

If you like snake movies you should watch this one, it scared the living daylights out of me watching it as a youngster, had me checking under the sofa for snakes!

Every country out eats different animals that would appear disgusting to others and i guess a lot get badly treated. Imagine eating bugs and snails and rats but the people that eat them probably find them delicious.

Just like they say in some parts of the world. A dog is not just for christmas. Cut it and cook it right and you can still be eating it into the new year. :eek2:

I almost never cry.
But when my dad was cutting onions the other day, the tears just started flowing.

Onions was such a good dog.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ive actually tried alot of different bugs, spiders etc.
Not really my cup of tea. Nothing wrong with the flavor on most of them (you mostly just taste the spice)
But the consistency was hard to ignore. Crunchy was fine, but gooey not so much.

I ate fried crickets with some kind of hotterthanhell spice-mix, and they were really good.
Looked kind of like this.

Bears are not very picky eaters i guess, ;)

See that 90 immigrants have crossed to our shores in 1 day, what happens if or rather when the virus becomes
widespread in their countries of origin, dont know how many make it here without getting caught but they would not be keen to surrender to the authorities to be tested if they have symptoms

I have the coronavirus for the last 3 days now, o.k. maybe not it might just be the flu but I am really not feeling good going on 3 days now. :(. Somebody help!

If you are unwell regardless of what it is can you not seek help ? In the UK we can phone and speak to medical personnel and they will advise us based on what we tell them the next course of action to take.

If you have the actual flu i doubt you would be able to message on here though as its debilitating. Have you taken temperature etc?

Get well soon.

Very diplomatic way of saying is it the cold ;-)

Touch wood, only had it proper once, and didn’t even see sunlight, never mind my phone :-p

One knows if they have flu as they're unlikely to be doing much of anything, in a completely weakened state.

Nor is it really something someone's likely to get often, usually once or twice I'd imagine as it's pretty overwhelming.

I feel I had it twice, but in reality it was probably only the once, round about age 12-13. Much bed-ridden nothingness ensued, where even simple tasks like slurping chicken soup seemed like a herculean feat :D

As for general winter-related malaise & ailments, short of having no colds etc for the better part of 15+ years, I did manage to catch some foul virus between a short set of menial tasks out and about, resulting in 4-5 days of morphing lethargy and cold-related symptomatic shenanigans! Yay woo!

So I fully get how dangerous the likes of the Corona virus can be if left to spread unchecked. How quickly a virulent showstopper like that can bring someone to heel is unnerving, as evidenced by the far less potent mini-flu hybrid I experienced. For which I blame London Transport's slime-ridden cesspit bus handles incidentally, the skanks

Frightening figures coming out of China, 97 deaths and 15% increase in infections yesterday, even our
government is starting to take it seriously.
what exactly are the symptoms does anyone actually know.

Also the hysteria is getting silly the figures are still nothing compared to the annual flu season, one woman rang LBC last night to say she won't go anywhere near anyone who is Chinese so now racism is raising it's ugly head.

Another figure no one notes is that 910 deaths so far and 908 in China which means China must be doing the right thing to stop it spreading outside the country.
